CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 238: THE TRAP AT THE GATES

Inside his private war tent, Caius sat cross-legged in the dark. The shadows near his boots suddenly lengthened, rising into the gaunt, ghostly figure of Old Bones.

"Master," Old Bones whispered, bowing deeply. "I have scouted the imperial capital. The city is heavily fortified, and within its inner sanctum, I detected nearly a hundred beings bearing mana cores, their so-called gods."

Caius opened his eyes, his violet-gold gaze burning in the dim light. "A hundred," he murmured softly. "And yet Lysander marches toward them without a single flicker of doubt. He hasn't shown his true hand. If the capital holds a hundred deities, Lysander undoubtedly possesses the means to summon double that number through his medallion."

Caius reached up, touching the dark mithril studs embedded in his brow. "Prepare the domain forces, Old Bones. We may be forced onto the battlefield sooner than expected."

"As you command, Master," Old Bones rasped, dissolving into a stream of dark mist that retreated back into the Crown Core lattice on Caius’s forehead.

For two days, Lysander’s host pressed eastward across the sun-scorched plains until the colossal marble walls and towering golden spires of the imperial capital loomed against the horizon.

Drawn up before the massive city gates, Lysander rode to the front of his army. "King of the Empire!" his voice boomed across the open field, amplified by divine aura. "Throw down your weapons and surrender! Surrender your crown, your city, and the false gods who shelter within your walls, or be swept into history!"

A mocking burst of laughter echoed from the high ramparts. The imperial king stood upon the battlements, flanked by gilded commanders. Without uttering a single word of parley, he raised his sword and gestured downward.

With a thunderous groan of iron gears, the monumental gates of the capital swung wide open.

Out surged the imperial army, a vast ocean of bronze and steel, outnumbering Lysander’s host two to one. But what truly dominated the field was the vanguard in the rear, nearly a hundred core-bearing deities clad in ornate, gleaming armor, wielding weapons surging with elemental magic.

Lysander didn't flinch. Instead, a dark, boisterous laugh tore from his throat.

"Foolish mortals!" Lysander roared. Reaching beneath his chestplate, he pulled out the dark, humming medallion and held it high toward the sky. "You think numbers alone make a kingdom?"

Channeling a torrent of divine energy into the artifact, Lysander tore open reality itself. A massive, jagged spatial rift ruptured behind his front lines, crackling with dark green lightning. From the depths of the rift marched two hundred fully armored deities, their mana cores burning with terrifying intensity.

The battle that followed was swift and utterly merciless.

With two hundred divine champions spearheading Lysander's assault, the imperial defense collapsed in less than an hour. The plain ran red with blood as the enemy core-bearers were slaughtered where they stood. Those who survived were cast to their knees and bound in heavy, mana-suppressing iron chains. By sunset, the imperial capital belonged to Archon Lysander.

In the central courtyard of the captured palace, amidst the smoke and groans of chained prisoners, Caius walked up to Lysander. He kept his hood low, his hands resting casually near his twin short swords.

"Congratulations on your conquest, Archon," Caius said, his voice calm and detached. "Your war is won. As agreed, our paths diverge here, I must continue eastward to search for my mother."

Lysander turned slowly, a wide, predatory grin spreading across his face. He wiped a streak of blood from his cheek, his eyes locking onto Caius with terrifying hunger.

"I am afraid your search must be delayed, my young friend," Lysander chuckled, his voice dropping into a cold, dangerous rumble. "A mind like yours is far too valuable to lose. Serve me as my chief grand strategist for ten short years... then perhaps I will grant you your freedom."

Lysander raised his right hand, the medallion on his palm glowing violently. "I have known what you are from the moment you stood beside me on that cliff face. A hidden deity, a god playing at being a wanderer."

A surging wave of heavy, viscous green mana erupted from Lysander's hand, lashing outward to wrap tightly around Caius like crushing, binding pythons. The green energy locked onto his arms and torso, seeking to paralyze his core.

Caius didn't even flinch. He looked down at the glowing green chains binding him, then looked back up at Lysander with an expression of pure, unbothered indifference.

With a subtle shift of his frame and a microscopic trickle of his refined thread-mana, Caius flexed his shoulders.

CRACK.

The green binding energy shattered into harmless, glittering dust, dissolving instantly into the air.

Lysander’s smile vanished, his eyes widening in genuine shock.

"What?"

"Surround him!" Lysander roared, stepping back.

Instantly, the two hundred deities under Lysander's command drew their swords, spears, and halberds, forming a tight, impenetrable circle around Caius, their mana cores flaring in unison.

Standing in the center of the trap, Caius let out a soft, dark chuckle beneath the shadow of his hood.

"You brought two hundred chaotic, undisciplined gods to enslave me, Lysander?" Caius whispered softly. "Allow me to show you what a true war machine looks like."

Caius tapped his forehead. The black mithril studs on his brow flared with brilliant violet light as he slashed his hand through the air, tearing open a massive, abyss-black spatial rift right behind him.

A wave of suffocating, disciplined pressure poured out of the void, freezing the surrounding deities in their tracks as the half-strength deployment of his living forces mobilized with terrifying precision.

First came the Heavy Vanguard Infantry. Exactly 324 elite living soldiers surged out in a deep-column wedge array led by four human Centurions. Moving as a single organism, they locked their massive steel tower shields into a dense anvil, instantly turning the courtyard into a constricted choke point that completely neutralized the deities' attempt to encircle them.

Directly behind the anvil stepped the Mage Array, overseen by the High Arcane Mage commanding 13 synchronized spell cells. Half of the cells instantly raised interlocking obsidian wards over the infantry century blocks, while the remaining assault mages unleashed focused, devastating elemental bombardments, their targets pinpointed in real-time by the glowing violet light of Caius’s Eye of the Loom.

Before Lysander's core-bearers could process the tactical barrier holding them back, a thunderous roar of iron hoofbeats echoed from the rift. The Barbarian Knights deployed, 100 mounted juggernauts split into two 50-knight wings under their Centurions. Operating as a mobile kinetic hammer, the knights thundered down the flanks created by the vanguard, their overwhelming momentum smashing through the disorganized gods before wheeling away for another brutal pass.

Lysander stood frozen, watching his invincible army of deities get methodically dismantled by a cold, perfectly synchronized militaristic machine.
