CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 222: THE ORC GENERAL
With a flick of Caius’s wrist, the vault doors swung open. Squads of dark elf stewards and Arachne caretakers moved in, ushering the nearly fourteen thousand bruised and battered orcs toward the lower recovery chambers to be bathed in regenerative mana broods.
Left behind on the blood-slicked stone were the victorious thousand.
They stood tall and proud, every single one of them a towering titan well over eight feet in height, their massive chests heaving with victorious pride. Yet, as Caius’s violet-gold eyes scanned the frontline, his gaze snagged on a striking anomaly standing near the center.
Among the sea of green behemoths stood a single orc who barely reached six feet in height.
While his brethren were towering hulks of massive bone and thick hide, he was built like a human barbarian warrior in his absolute prime, compact, lethal, and densely muscled. His broad shoulders were carved like granite, his posture perfectly poised, and his sharp, calculating eyes burned with a predatory tactical intelligence that set him completely apart from the raw brutes around him.
Caius made a quiet mental note of the warrior, a subtle smirk playing on his lips.
"Form yourselves into fifty squares," Caius commanded, his voice echoing across the quiet hall. "Twenty warriors per square. Choose your supreme commander from among your ranks."
Caius expected a shouting match or a brief display of dominance. Instead, the response was instantaneous. Without a single grumble or argument, all one thousand towering hulks turned in absolute synchronization and fell into formation behind the six-foot orc. The eight-foot giants lowered their heads in silent, unquestioning deference to the most lethal warrior among them.
"Interesting," Caius murmured under his breath. He looked down at the barbarian-built orc. "Now, select two officers for each of your fifty squares."
The six-foot leader barked a pair of guttural commands, pointing sternly across the ranks. Within seconds, one hundred officers stepped forward, taking their positions at the flanks of each square with flawless military precision.
Caius stepped down from the dais. "You have raw power, but raw power without structure is merely slaughter. I am giving you a discipline forgotten by this age, a tactical formation codex I unsealed within the deepest archives of Clan Vel'drin."

Caius raised his gauntleted hand. Fanning his fingers, one thousand gossamer-thin Arachne threads shot out, piercing straight into the crown points of all one thousand orcs simultaneously.
The warriors stiffened as Caius transferred the ancient knowledge directly into their neural pathways. Images of interlocking shield walls, sweeping spear lines, tight-knit square maneuvers, and synchronized thrusting drills burned into their minds. It was a lost system of heavy infantry square tactics, built upon absolute cohesion, iron defense, and relentless forward march.
As the threads snapped back, the side vaults rumbled open. Dozens of multi-legged Arachne drones marched into the hall, carrying heavy racks of custom-forged gear.
The equipment gleamed with a lethal, dark luster, heavy plate armor, closed Corinthian-style helmets with narrow eye slits, towering rectangular shields designed for interlocking defense, long hoplite-style thrusting pikes, and double-edged broadswords built to cleave through plate. Everything was forged from a high-density black iron and mithril alloy, lightweight yet virtually indestructible.
The one thousand orcs immediately began equipping the gear. When the six-foot leader donned his standard-issue armor, however, the heavy chest plate swallowed him whole, the helmet forged for an eight-foot titan sliding completely down over his ears.
The orc growled in annoyance, stripping off the oversized helmet. He marched straight up to a senior Arachne weaversmith, jabbing a thick finger at his own broad chest and snapping in guttural, impatient dark-speech for a custom set tailored specifically to his compact, barbarian frame. The weaversmith bowed quickly, her multi-jointed fingers already measuring his unique proportions.
Caius watched the exchange with growing amusement before turning toward the exit.
"I will return in one month," Caius called back over his shoulder. "If you have not mastered the codex by then, I will scrap the lot of you."
He hadn't even taken three steps toward the corridor when a harsh, authoritative roar shattered the quiet of the vault.
"SQUARES ONE TO TWENTY, FORM PHALANX! SQUARES TWENTY-ONE TO FORTY, COUNTER-CHARGE!"
The barbarian-built orc was already barking tactical commands at the top of his lungs. Before Caius could even leave the room, the one thousand warriors snapped into action. Shields locked together with a deafening metallic CLANG, long pikes lowered in perfect unison, and forty squares immediately split to face each other in an intense, full-contact mock battle drill.
Caius paused at the threshold, turning his head back to watch the six-foot general pacing between the clashing shield walls, shouting corrections and striking misaligned legs with the butt of a spear.
Caius let out a low, genuine chuckle, his violet-gold eyes sparkling with dark delight.
"Ho ho... an orc general?"
