CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 210: THE SOVEREIGN’S PACK
Caius slipped past the mouth of the cavern, his body dissolving into the surrounding blackness through Shadow Steps. Wrapped in his Abyssal Cloak, his aura, scent, and spatial signature were completely erased. He moved along the jagged subterranean ceiling like a ghost, looking down into the heart of the den.
The cavern opened into a vast underground hollow, lit only by the faint bioluminescence of abyssal moss. Below, the pack assembled. Alongside the six hunters who had returned with the stalker's carcass, four more giant adult wolves guarded the inner perimeter, bringing the total to ten. Near the back of the den, nestled in a bed of crushed bone and dry moss, six wolf pups tumbled over one another. Despite being born into the brutal Abyss, they looked almost cute, their fluffy black fur puffing out as they playfully nipped at each other's paws.
Caius observed them, his eyes gleaming in the dark. Pups or adults, it made no difference. His greed for this pack only grew. A pack of spatial-shifting shadow wolves would serve as an unbeatable hunting force.
His gaze hardened. His right hand twitched, and black mana threads spun outward in absolute silence.
Arachne Thread Art: Thread Binding.
Dozens of razor-thin spatial threads descended from the shadows, wrapping tightly around the limbs, throats, and torsos of every adult wolf. The spatial anchors snapped taut, pinning all ten beasts to the cavern floor before a single howl could escape their jaws.
Caius dropped from the ceiling, landing softly on the basalt stone. He unsheathed his twin Sabre-Tiger short swords, white bone blades humming with compressed purple lightning. He stepped toward the nearest adult, raising his blade to pierce its skull and harvest its core.
A violent snap echoed through the cavern.
The lead alpha, a behemoth with scar-laced fur, forced its spatial mana to implode against the binding lines. It shattered the threads around its chest, but instead of lunging at Caius's exposed throat, the alpha immediately lowered its massive head. It dropped its front legs flat against the stone and bowed, its ears pinned back, letting out a low, whimpering rumble.
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
It was not a challenge. It was a plea for mercy for its pack and pups.
Caius paused, his lightning-coated blade hovering inches from the alpha's neck. He looked at the kneeling titan, then at the helpless pups in the back of the cave. Slowly, he extinguished the lightning and re-sheathed his short swords.
He walked over to a flat, moss-covered rock and sat down, resting his elbows on his knees as he looked down at the alpha.
"Choose among your pack," Caius said, his voice cold and echoing through the hollow cavern. "I will take them with me. The rest may stay."
The alpha raised its head, its glowing eyes locking onto Caius's Eye of the Loom. It let out a low, deep growl, not of anger, but of absolute refusal. Space around the beast stirred, conveying its silent answer: The pack goes where it all goes.
Caius raised an eyebrow, a quiet hum leaving his throat. "Pack is pack," he murmured. "You would rather die together than be broken apart."
He leaned forward, his Crown Core pulsing softly within his chest, projecting an overwhelming pressure that flattened the air in the den.
"If I spare your line and grant you strength," Caius asked, staring directly into the alpha's soul, "will there come a day when you bite your master's hand?"
The alpha understood the intent behind the sovereign words. Without hesitation, the giant beast opened its jaws. It coughed violently as a dark, intense pressure filled the entire cavern.
From deep within its chest, the alpha forced out a shimmering, crystalline sphere. It hovered in the air before floating gently into Caius's outstretched palm.
It was a Crown Essence Bead, pure, black-and-gold, and humming with spatial authority. By surrendering its essence bead willingly, the alpha had bound its entire line's allegiance to Caius forever.
Caius closed his fingers around the warm, pulsing bead, feeling its spatial resonance bind directly to his mind sea. A cold, satisfied smile touched his lips.
He stood up from the rock and swept his gauntleted hand through the air. The Crown Core within his chest flared with absolute intent, opening a massive, golden-black spatial rift across the cavern floor.
One by one, the ten adult wolves and six pups dissolved into streams of dark spatial light, flowing directly into the sovereign domain of his Crown Core to take their place within his mind sea.
The cavern fell silent once more, leaving Caius standing alone in the shadows.
