CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 206: THE SOVEREIGN POOL

Without another word, the Absolute Sun and Absolute Moon rose from their elevated thrones. Guiding Caius, Patriarch Vane, and Sereth down through the subterranean depths of the royal palace, they passed through dozens of ancient warding barriers until they reached the heart of the Underdark: the Grand Origin Chamber.

The vast, cavernous vault thrummed with a suffocating density of raw, unrefined mana. Natural spirit veins coursed through the basalt walls, illuminating the ancient stone in flickering waves of ambient light.

Caius walked calmly into the innermost center of the chamber, where the concentration of mana reached its peak. Stopping at the high focal stone, he extended his hand. Channeling subtle earth magic, he manipulated the surrounding stone and soil, shaping a raised mound in the center of the hall.

Reaching into his inner sea, Caius extracted a minuscule pinch of soil from his Crown Core, earth bathed for years in the dual-colored solar-dark mana of his sanctuary. He sprinkled the glowing granules onto the mound. The instant the Crown Core soil touched the earth, a violent surge of vitality erupted. The small mound expanded rapidly, transforming into a fertile, dark hill rich with life essence.

Caius placed the World Tree seed into the crest of the hill. With another swift gesture of earth magic, he carved a wide, deep circular trench entirely surrounding the base of the new hill.

Uncorking the crystal vial, Caius tilted it over the freshly carved trench. A thick, glowing stream of concentrated polar energies, a harmonious synthesis of liquid solar nectar and midnight lunar void, poured into the stone channel. The trench flooded instantly, filling with a deep, shimmering black water that swirled with dark-gold filaments.

As the polar waters settled, the seed atop the hill cracked open. A vibrant, silver-and-gold sapling burst through the soil, rapidly growing to the height of a man as its broad leaves unfolded, humming with the law of the World Tree.

"When this tree grows large, the continuous absorption and processing of dual mana will perpetually enrich the waters below," Caius explained, his voice echoing clearly through the grand vault. "Once every year, a maximum of ten chosen warriors from your race may bathe in the black pool. The concentrated origin essence will allow their cultivation to leap one or two full levels. Furthermore, any cultivator who merely meditates beneath its canopy will break through lingering bottlenecks."

The Absolute Sun and Absolute Moon stared at the glowing sapling and the swirling black pool in stunned, reverent silence. Satisfied, the Absolute Sun raised his arm and drove his golden flame into the remaining blood-scroll, burning away his half of the ancestral seal and completely severing Clan Vel'drin's ancient oath.

As Patriarch Vane and Sereth collected the final blank scrolls, a cold, quiet smirk touched Caius's lips beneath his cloak.

In truth, Caius had outsmarted the dual rulers from the moment he entered the Underdark. The seed, the Crown Core soil, and the polar nectar were originally part of a single, unified planting package designed to instantly establish a self-sustaining World Tree ecosystem.

Had the Absolute Sun accepted the seed without complaint, Caius would have handed over only the seed, leaving the Sovereigns with a sapling that would take millennia to mature without the origin soil and pool catalyst.

By attempting to squeeze a second price out of Caius out of dark elf greed, the Sun had merely demanded the second half of the very package Caius had already brought with him. Caius had surrendered nothing extra, using their own avarice to deliver the complete system while securing House Vel'drin's absolute freedom.
