CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 204: THE SOVEREIGN'S INVITATION

In the deep, frost-draped hall of House Vel'drin, the frigid subterranean air hummed with sudden, violent tension. Without warning, a razor-thin seam of dark violet-gold light split the darkness. Space itself folded inward like parchment before ripping open, revealing a spatial gateway that led directly from the high chambers of Castle Precipice.

Caius stepped smoothly through the rift, his dark mantle settling as the portal collapsed behind him into nothingness.

Sitting at the head of the obsidian table, Patriarch Vane did not reach for his blade, nor did his son Sereth draw his dual short-swords. In a realm defined by assassination and treacherous dark games, only one man possessed the audacity, as well as the spatial mastery, to step unannounced into the inner sanctum of a Dark Elf high house.

"You grow more impatient with doorframe pleasantries, Caius," Patriarch Vane spoke softly, his silver hair catching the dim glow of the chamber's spirit lanterns. A wry, faint smile touched the old patriarch's lips, worn by centuries of subterranean politics.

"Doorways are for guests, Patriarch. Not brothers-in-arms," Caius replied, stepping forward. He glanced at Sereth, exchanging a brief, silent nod with his long-time comrade. A decade of shared blood, tactical campaigns, and mutual survival bound the three of them, forming a bond far stronger than any contractual alliance. "Sereth. You look as though the Underdark’s political squabbles are wearing on your edge."

Sereth let out a quiet, bitter chuckle, adjusting the leather wrap on his dual hilts. "The council elders play their endless games while the frost creeps deeper into our stone. It grows tiresome."

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

Caius leaned against the heavy stone table, his violet-gold pupils fixing upon Patriarch Vane. "Then let us speak without masks. How long do you intend to keep House Vel'drin bound to this frozen subterranean waste? How long will you let your clan dance on the invisible strings of the Sun and Moon Sovereigns?"

Patriarch Vane’s eyes narrowed slightly, a heavy silence settling over the hall. The Sun and Moon Sovereigns, serving as the absolute rulers of the dark elf pantheon and realm, held the souls of every high house in an iron grip through ancient ancestral oaths.

"To be unbound... to stand free from their strings," the Patriarch murmured, looking down at his weathered hands. "It has been my dream since I took the mantle. But an oath sealed in blood cannot simply be broken, Caius. The moment we defy the Sovereigns, our bloodline will be purged from the Underdark."

"Then do not remain in the Underdark," Caius said, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, calm authority. "I am offering you a way out. Migrate Clan Vel'drin out of this pit. All one thousand of your people."

Sereth straightened, his eyes sharpening. "To the surface?"

"To my domain," Caius clarified, looking directly at Patriarch Vane. "I have carved out a fertile, fortified territory directly beside Castle Precipice, a dedicated land holding carved from the former Solarian realm. It will belong to House Vel'drin. You will rule it autonomously, free from the dark games of the council, free from the frozen wastes, and permanently shielded beneath my shadow. In exchange, you break your ties with the Sovereigns and anchor your lineage to my sovereign seat."

Patriarch Vane sat in deep contemplation, the weight of a thousand clan lives resting upon his shoulders. He looked at Sereth, seeing the quiet fire in his son's eyes, a desire for true freedom away from the stagnant corruption of the Underdark.

The Patriarch raised his head, his gaze locking onto Caius with unwavering trust. "I first met you when you were fourteen. You trained for two years, won the Trial of Fate, and became a sovereign in less than a decade. We bet on you then, Caius, and we will bet on you again. If you hold the key to our freedom, we accept. Prepare the land. House Vel'drin will march."
