CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 195: THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE SIX
One year had passed since the blood of the line of Alden sank into the soil of the Western Plains. Where war had torn the earth open, stone and iron now took root.
Caius Macrae stood upon the high battlements of the central capital, the wind carrying the sharp, metallic tang of spell-forged iron from the valley below. The ancient Kingdom of Solaria was forever abolished, its crests burned, its titles erased, and its name stricken from the annals of history. Out of its ashes, Caius built a new domain: The Kingdom of the Six.
Caius had no interest in presiding over a fragile, fractured realm of subjugated nobles who secretly sharpened knives in the dark. He demanded an immovable foundation. To ensure the new nation could withstand the inevitable storms gathering across the eastern peaks and southern horizons, he spent twelve long months reshaping the very soul of the land.
Instead of a centralized, vulnerable crown, Caius carved the territory into six sovereign domains, establishing the Six Cities: the central capital, the granaries of Oakford, the iron-rich Marches of the North, the coastal trade hubs, the western forest duchies, and the mountain keeps guarding the Abyss. Each city was governed by one of the Six Kings—rulers chosen not by birthright or bloodline, but by absolute capability, and tethered directly to Caius through an unbreakable spiritual bond. Through the sovereign tether rooted in their core nodes, any betrayal, hesitation, or disloyalty would be snuffed out instantly by the master who forged them.
The first half of the year belonged to the stone-weavers and war-smiths. Along the vast perimeter of the realm, subterranean Arachne architecture merged with dark-spatial fortification arrays, carving gargantuan fortress-nodes directly out of living rock to protect the six domains.
To hold these choke points, Caius abandoned the traditional, bloated royal army in favor of the Chapter Lodges—decentralized military orders that operated as self-sustaining defense hubs answering directly to the Kings of each city.
Along the eastern mountain passes stood the Iron-Clad Order, their heavy knights wielding spatial-infused tower shields capable of absorbing siege-level kinetic impacts.
Farther along the perimeter marched the Order of the Radiant Vanguard. They were no soft-spoken priests hiding behind back-line barricades; they were battle-healers clad in enchanted silver-obsidian plate. Wielding heavy war-hammers in one hand and high-grade restorative mana in the other, the Radiant Slayers crushed threats on the front lines while instantly mending the shattered bones and meridians of their comrades mid-combat. Deep beneath their border strongholds lay sprawling underground field hospitals, where spatial purification arrays scrubbed field toxins and violent mana backlashes before rot could claim a single life.

Anchoring the entire defensive web stood the Grand Obsidian Magic Tower at the heart of the central capital. Rising like a jagged black needle into the clouds, the gargantuan spire functioned as the central nervous system for the realm's military. From its peak, arcanists maintained long-range spatial relay grids, prepared artillery-scale elemental bombardments, and wirelessly channeled ambient world mana straight into the Obsidian Beads implanted in troops deployed hundreds of leagues away.
With the borders locked in iron, Caius turned his gaze inward. In the eighth month, he shattered a millennium of feudal tradition with a dual decree designed to strip away the internal rot of society: the Edict of Universal Knowledge and the Doctrine of the Unified Sun.
Caius knew that legal edicts alone could not instantly eradicate centuries of deep-seated racial hatred and tribal bigotry that festered between humans, beastkin, orcs, and elves. To truly unify the populace, belief itself had to be rewritten. Through state-sanctioned decree, he instituted a new religious focus across the Six Cities: the absolute tenet that all mortals, regardless of bloodline or physical form, were equal under the sun. Racism and racial supremacy were codified not merely as social slights, but as blasphemy against the state and high treason against the Sovereign, punishable by immediate purging through the core tethers. Temples that once worshipped fractured, race-segregated deities were replaced with unified sanctuaries, forcing former enemies to pray side-by-side beneath the light of the realm.
Complementing this spiritual realignment, the foundations of the Grand Academies rose across every major province. Carved into the lintels of every academy gatehouse was a single, unyielding truth:
"Knowledge belongs to those who carry the will to master it, not those born with gilded bloodlines."
For the first time in recorded history, an institution operated on absolute meritocracy. Nobles and peasants, humans and half-elves, beastkin and lowland Orcs sat side-by-side in the same lecture halls, bound by a shared faith and an equal standing under the law. Race and birthright meant nothing; only discipline and talent mattered.
Caius spared no expense, drawing the finest minds across the continent with vast riches and protection. Retired grandmasters taught students to align their meridians and sync with basic-grade Obsidian Beads. Master arcanists demonstrated the delicate balance of spatial arrays and alchemy without fracturing one's soul. Arcane architects, master smiths, and agricultural strategists instructed the next generation in mass-producing spell-forged tools, managing subterranean irrigation, and operating high-efficiency trade networks.
As the twelfth month drew to a close, the Kingdom of the Six was no longer a hastily conquered territory—it was a roaring engine of absolute efficiency. The granaries were full, the borders were impenetrable, and a new generation of multi-racial scholars and battle-tested knights stood ready to serve under the unyielding command of the Six Kings.
Yet, as Caius rested his hands against the cold stone railing, his eyes drifted toward the southern horizon—toward the vast, wealthy territory still marked on old maps as the Duchy of Alden.
The outer walls were built. The time had come to reorganize the heart of the realm, starting with the land that held the memories of his past.
