CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 188: TUNNELS OF THE ABYSS

  • Next Chapter

For seven grueling days, a suffocating silence hovered over the open fields before Alban City.

Behind the shimmering, golden dome of the high-tier Solarian ward, twenty thousand human defenders and their allied High Elven Sentinels stood atop the stone battlements, their knuckles white against their spears. Below them, the thirteen thousand troops of the Obsidian Legion and the silent, bead-marked human puppet legion remained motionless. They did not set up siege ladders. They did not construct catapults. They simply stood in vast, unyielding ranks like statues of blackened steel, bleeding endless tension into the hearts of the city's defenders.

Inside the dark silk war tent at the center of the camp, Caius sat in absolute stillness, his eyes closed as his mind sea tracked subtle vibrations deep within the earth beneath the city.

A soft skittering sound broke the quiet. An Arachne officer, her upper torso clad in dark-enameled chitin plate and her lower eight spider legs clicking rhythmically against the stone floor, bowed low before Caius.

"Sovereign," she rasped, her multi-faceted eyes glinting in the dim candlelight. "The tunnels are complete. The ley-line anchors beneath the city walls have been severed."

Caius opened his eyes, the dual-colored violet and gold pupils igniting with lethal coldness. He rose smoothly from his seat, his mantle sweeping behind him.

"Start the seige," Caius commanded softly.

Outside, a low, gut-wrenching horn sounded across the plains.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The five colossal Orc Chieftain puppets surged forward at the front of the assault, followed by the thousands of mindless human puppets. The defenders along the ramparts reacted instantly, raining down ballista bolts, enchanted arrows, and cascades of light-elemental spells. Heavy iron bolts punched through the ranks of the unarmored human puppets, but the mind-controlled thralls felt no pain, pressing forward relentlessly to absorb the volley while the five chitin-clad Orc puppets smashed their massive waraxes directly against the golden barrier's outer rim.

The city defenders fought fiercely, pouring boiling oil and kinetic spells down upon the gate, believing they were holding the line against a crude frontal assault.

They were entirely wrong.

THOOM! CRACK!

In the very center of Alban City's main plaza, deep behind the safety of the golden shield, the cobblestone streets suddenly caved inward. A terrifying, subterranean roar echoed throughout the city as the ground collapsed into massive, yawning chasms.

Out from the dark earth erupted a sprawling legion of cavern-bred Arachne warrior spiders. Led by one thousand humanoid Arachne shock-troops clad in reforged Solarian plate, the chitinous tide spilled into the streets like a living plague, shrieking as their corrosive shadow-blades tore through the panicked city guards.

Simultaneously, pouring out from the secondary tunnels behind the inner wall came the elite dark elf shadowblades and barbarian vanguards of the Quick Reaction Legion. Moving like ghosts through the chaos, they bypassed the outer defenses entirely, slaughtered the gatehouse guards from behind, and threw open the massive iron gates of Alban City.

The golden Solarian shield flickered violently and shattered into harmless sparkles of light as the ley-line conduits were severed from below. The thirteen thousand waiting soldiers of the Obsidian Legion poured through the open gates like a dark tidal wave.

"Hold the line! Protect the core!" screamed the High Elven Grand Mage atop the inner sanctuary tower. Realizing the city was collapsing from within, the mage raised his glowing staff, channeling his entire life force and the remaining ambient light mana into a desperate, high-tier summoning ritual.

A pillar of blinding white radiance pierced the storm clouds. From the light emerged a high-tier Solar Angel, a divine construct of pure golden fire, flaring four wings of divine light as it raised a blazing broadsword to purge the invading darkness.

The human defenders gasped in brief hope. But that hope died in an instant.

From the dark sky above, Caius hovered motionless within a swirling cloud of spatial shadows. With a single flick of his wrist, he unsealed the Crown Core's divine node.

"Emerge," Caius whispered.

A terrifying, oppressive pressure flattened the air across the entire city. The ambient light was instantly devoured as the Obsidian Seraph descended from the clouds. Clad in pitch-black, light-absorbing obsidian armor, its six blade-wings flared wide, radiating a cold, high-frequency dark plasma that hummed like thunder.

The High Elven mages froze in absolute, paralyzing terror.

The Solar Angel let out a divine screech, lunging forward with its burning sword. But the Obsidian Seraph moved faster than human sight could comprehend. Transforming into a streak of black plasma, it phase-shifted straight through the angel's light.

SLASH!

The Obsidian Seraph’s dark plasma broadsword sheared through the Solar Angel’s neck and four wings in a single, fluid arc. The divine construct didn't even have time to explode, its golden light instantly devoured by the dark blade, collapsing into harmless ash that drifted down onto the blood-stained streets.

High Lord Lorien's reanimated puppet stepped onto the high balcony beside the dying High Elven mage, holding the star-shaped Royal Seal high for all to see.

The battle for Alban City was over.
