Chapter 265

He tried to move toward her, but the moment he took a step, George’s voice stopped him.

"Careful now. You wouldn’t want to make any sudden movements, would you?"

Alex turned toward him, his eyes burning with fury.

"What did you do to her?!"

Me?" George asked innocently. "Oh, nothing particularly special. I merely continued what I was doing before you arrived."

His gaze drifted toward Celine.

"Your little friend was quite stubborn, you know. I asked her a few simple questions, but she refused to cooperate. Naturally, I had to persuade her."

George looked back at Alex.

"Unfortunately, she was much more troublesome than I expected. Still, I suppose I should thank her. If she hadn’t resisted so fiercely, I might never have had the pleasure of meeting you."

Alex’s fists trembled. He wanted to tear George apart with his bare hands. But he forced himself to remain still, carefully observing his surroundings while trying to understand the situation.

George noticed his actions and smiled approvingly.

"Good. You’re still thinking despite your circumstances. I was beginning to worry that you might be the sort of fool who lets anger dictate every decision."

He took a leisurely step forward.

"Let me explain something to you, Alex. This entire situation has been under my control from the beginning."

George’s expression remained pleasant as he continued speaking.

"When I attacked Celine, I already suspected that the person hiding behind that ridiculous black skull mask might come to save her. After all, she was involved in the incident at Marcus’s estate, and someone with your abilities would naturally be interested in protecting his companions."

He paused thoughtfully.

"Of course, I couldn’t be certain at first. But then I sensed someone approaching the battlefield at an incredible speed. A normal mundane human would have fled after hearing the destruction around here, yet you came straight toward the fighting without hesitation."

George chuckled.

"That was when I began to suspect that you might be the person I’d been looking for. Perhaps Celine had somehow managed to send you a message before I could stop her. Perhaps you were already nearby. Whatever the reason, I decided to welcome you personally."

Alex’s expression darkened.

"So you put me under your illusion the moment I arrived?"

"Precisely."

George snapped his fingers.

"From the moment you entered this area, everything you experienced was carefully arranged. I made you believe you were looking at Celine, and I made you believe you were fighting me. Every exchange, every word I spoke was part of the deception."

He smiled.

"Even your little performance with those three crimson spheres was rather entertaining. Watching you congratulate yourself for defeating an opponent who wasn’t even there in the first place was quite amusing."

Alex’s breathing grew heavier.

"And the explosion?"

"Ah, that." George glanced at the devastated surroundings. "A wonderful little bonus, wouldn’t you agree? You see, your ability was much more destructive than I anticipated. I expected you to possess considerable strength, but I never imagined you would unleash something capable of causing this much damage."

He gestured toward the ruined buildings and the bodies scattered across the ground.

"Several innocent people have paid the price for your attack. I must admit, I hadn’t planned on that particular outcome, but one must appreciate unexpected gifts when they arrive."

Alex’s eyes turned bloodshot.

"You bastard!"

George merely laughed.

"Don’t blame me for your mistakes. You were the one who unleashed that attack without confirming your target. I simply gave you the opportunity to demonstrate what you were capable of."

He tilted his head, studying Alex with renewed interest.

"Still, I must admit you’ve surprised me. The teleportation ability, those crimson spheres, and physical strength and speed roughly twice that of an ordinary Ascendant Realm Awakened. To possess several abilities at once is quite remarkable."

George’s smile became slightly colder.

"I can see why you’ve been causing so much trouble. If you continue growing at this rate, you might become a serious threat to people like me."

He paused.

"Unfortunately, that means I can’t allow you to live."

Alex stared at him.

George’s voice remained calm as he continued.

"You see, you’ve already ruined my plans by killing a very loyal mole of mine and interfering with my operation at Marcus’s estate. I had intended to acquire his entire collection of assets, but you made that considerably more difficult."

He shrugged.

"The mole you even killed was like a relative of mine you see. So I can’t simply overlook that, can I?"

George sighed.

"An enemy with your potential must never be allowed to grow. Leaving you alive would be an unnecessary risk, and I’m not particularly fond of taking unnecessary risks."

Alex lowered his head.

For a moment, he remained completely silent. Then he suddenly laughed. It first of all started as a quiet chuckle before gradually growing louder, until he was laughing hard enough to make his injured stomach ache.

George raised an eyebrow.

"Have you finally lost your mind?"

Alex slowly lifted his head, revealing a pair of cold, murderous eyes.

"Do you really think I’m going to die here?"

George’s smile returned.

"Uh yes."

Alex’s expression hardened.

"Then come and kill me."

Immediately he said that his eyes changed colors from green to light purple with faint clock like designs that began to rotate as he activated the second ability of Eye Of Chronos, making time slow down.

George’s smile became almost motionless as the surrounding dust particles hung almost still in the air. Alex immediately moved, channeling his strength into a single, decisive attack.

He appeared before George and drove his fist through the man’s chest, following up with a devastating strike that crushed his skull.

The body collapsed lifeless. Alex landed several steps away and deactivated his ability, breathing heavily as he watched George’s remains fall to the ground.

For one brief moment, he thought he had finally done it. That he had finally put the bastard down... But then a familiar voice spoke from behind him.

"Well, well. That was quite a desperate move, wasn’t it, Alex?"

Alex’s eyes widened. Slowly, he turned his head toward the voice, only to discover that the body he had just destroyed was no longer there. Which made his heart sink.

The bastard had fooled him again! It was another illusion!
