Chapter 1083 Set a Deadly Trap to Verify What Happened

"Today the only person we recognize is Mr. Hughes." Seeing that Joshua Hughes’s men seemed to be cooperating, the few of them grew bolder and more relentless.

"Tired of living, are you?" Joshua’s ice-cold eyes swept over those men, terrifying to the extreme, making it feel as if tiny, viciously poisonous insects were crawling up from the soles of their feet. Slowly, cold sweat seeped down their spines and they froze where they stood.

When Joshua Hughes spoke, he carried absolute authority, like a ruler who looked down on everything.

Julian Carter could clearly feel that Joshua Hughes was suppressing his fury, because the cold in Joshua’s eyes had already reached a terrifying peak.

"Even if you’re law enforcers, you can’t interfere with Mr. Hughes’s freedom. Today he’s only cooperating to give you face. If he’s unwilling, no one can force it. You’d best move aside, or once things get ugly, no one will look good." Julian said coolly, "So please don’t bring ridicule upon yourselves."

Joshua Hughes couldn’t wait any longer. He strode forward, and before anyone could see how he moved, he had already grabbed the tallest man blocking the doorway and hurled him over his shoulder, flinging him viciously behind him, then charged out in long strides.......

In the end he still resorted to violence. Even though no blood was drawn, it was trouble all the same. No matter what the other side was, starting a fight in public was never a good thing.

The car shot forward at a breakneck speed, more thrilling than anything in a movie. Joshua Hughes’s large hands clenching the steering wheel were already slick with cold sweat; his heart pounded heavily, losing all rhythm, as if it were about to burst out of his chest. In his heart he prayed over and over: nothing can happen, Avery, if anything happens to you, I’ll make the whole world be buried with you........

Early this morning, he’d sensed that her mood was off, but he never imagined something like this would happen. She had actually slit her own wrist. When Eliza Bell told him she was being resuscitated in the hospital, it felt as if a knife had sliced his own heart open, blood dripping one drop at a time; with every drop, his heart grew a shade colder, as if the one who ought to be lying in the emergency room, being rescued, wasn’t her with the slashed wrist, but him, whose heart was in agony beyond endurance.

How could she not believe him? He loved her, loved her to the point where nothing else mattered. He didn’t care—how many times did he have to say it before she would believe that he truly didn’t care?

In front of his eyes he could still see the smile she’d worn that morning, faint as the most beautiful clouds at the horizon. Was such a beautiful sight destined to vanish? Impossible. He didn’t believe it. He refused to believe......

The figure lying on the white hospital bed was like a ray of light about to go out, growing painfully transparent. Her breathing was weak; the gauze wrapped around her slender wrist even faintly seeped a trace of lurid crimson. Joshua Hughes gently stroked her small face, so sharp and pale, like the most fragile white rose, as if the slightest touch would cause it to wither.

"Avery, you have to be alright. If anything happens to you, I’ll rip out Beckett Wright’s organs one by one and use them as your offering......" His hoarse voice carried a tearing pain, infecting even the air with his grief and torment, turning it thin, gloomy, almost suffocating.

The door to the ward was pushed open again. A disheveled man practically stumbled and crawled his way in. The usual gentleness and quiet on his face were gone; his eyes were reddened, thick with moisture. "Avery Jane, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Nothing happened that day. I didn’t do anything. I just wanted you to give me a chance. Avery Jane, I didn’t know you hated me this much, I didn’t know......."

He was almost howling from the depths of his soul. The man, face as pale as paper, was filled with bitter remorse. He had never imagined that Avery Jane would go this far, leaving no way out either for herself or for him.

"I’m going to kill you........" The icy words drifted lightly through the air, weightless, so light it was terrifying.

At some point, as if by magic, a sharp knife had appeared in his palm, its thin blade glinting with a silver chill. He wanted to carve this man’s heart out alive, slice it piece by piece, and even that would not be enough to offset the pain burning in his own chest.

"Don’t......" A clear, moist, sweet voice, taut with tension, shattered the air that had been stretched to breaking point. It was like a cooling rain pouring down into the hottest, most blazing heat, dousing every last flame.
