Chapter 99: Five Days
Chapter 99: Five Days
Rebecca’s POV
"Please! Just give me five more days!" I cried out, the words bursting from my throat in a wave of pure panic. I grabbed his wet wrists, my fingers sinking into his skin as I begged. "Five more days. If she... if Rebecca doesn’t wake up by then, you can do whatever you want with me. But please, give her five days!"
Kaden let out a low, dark chuckle that vibrated right against my chest. His smirk grew wider, his green eyes filled with a cruel, mocking light.
"Why wait for such a long time?" he murmured, leaning his face so close I could feel the heat radiating from his skin. "Rebecca won’t wake up, Stephanie. In fact... I am thinking of removing that support machine entirely and just letting her go. She is nothing but a burden now." He shifted his hips, his massive, hard length dragging heavily against my thighs through my skirt. "Then, the two of us can have our fun. Trust me, I will treat you so much better."
My breath caught, my heart freezing in my chest as he kept talking.
"Just like the way a respected breeder of the Alpha King should be treated," he whispered, his voice dropping into a deep, possessive purr. "You won’t just be a maid anymore. You will be respected as the woman bearing my child."
At that exact moment, a wave of fierce rage washed over my terror. I wished with everything inside me that I could spit right in his arrogant, handsome face. How dare he? How could he think of that blinking, beeping machine holding my life and speak about turning it off so casually? How could he be so incredibly cruel, wanting to kill me just so he could have Stephanie?
And beneath the anger, a sharp, painful sting of jealousy ripped through my heart. Was he serious? Had he been secretly harboring an interest in Stephanie all this time? Was he really that eager to completely replace me with her the second I was out of commission? The thought made my stomach twist into a bitter, painful knot.
"Trust me, Rebecca will be back!" I shouted, my voice cracking with desperation as I tried to force him away. "I will do everything to bring her back! I will sit with her, I will talk to her every hour—she will wake up!"
Kaden let out a long, slow sigh. The dark, intense look in his eyes didn’t change, but his grip on my jaw softened just a little as he stared down at my trembling lips.
"Actually," he murmured, his voice cold and completely heartless, "I have lost interest in her. I want you."
"No," I choked out, my voice trembling as a tear escaped and rolled down my cheek, catching on his thumb. "No, you don’t mean that."
"I can do whatever the fuck I want," Kaden growled, his grip on my jaw tightening just enough to remind me of his power. He leaned down even further, his nose brushing against mine, his minty, hot breath fanning over my lips. "Rebecca was a traitor. A murderer. She brought nothing but chaos to my pack. But you..." His green eyes darkened to a shade so intense it made my skin crawl. "You are sweet. Obedient. And right now, your body is offering me exactly what I need."
To prove his point, he rolled his hips forward again. The heavy, stone-hard length of his cock pressed tightly against my lower stomach, forcing a soft, desperate whimper from my throat. He liked it. A dark, satisfied smirk spread across his face at my sound.
"Please," I whispered, my hands bunching into tight fists against his bare, muscled chest. I could feel the rapid, heavy thud of his heartbeat under my palms. To him, he was just throwing away Rebecca for a new toy.
"I told you, Stephanie," Kaden murmured, his voice dropping into a low, filthy whisper that vibrated straight down to my thighs. "You have until tonight to prepare yourself. If that machine is still beeping by then, I’m turning it off. And you will take her place permanently."
He suddenly let go of my jaw and stepped back, breaking the suffocating heat between our bodies.
The sudden rush of cold air made me shiver. Kaden turned his back to me completely without an ounce of shame, walking toward his massive bed where a silk robe was draped over the post.
"Finish cleaning the room," he commanded coldly, his tone shifting back to the ruthless King in an instant. "And think about your future. You can either be a maid who will be locked up for her crimes, or the woman who carries the next Alpha lineage. The choice is yours."
I stood frozen against the wall, my legs shaking so badly I could barely keep my balance. I looked at his broad, scarred back, the jealousy in my chest burning hotter than ever. He wanted to turn off my machine. He was really going to kill me.
With trembling hands, I didn’t even try to finish cleaning. I just turned around, unlocked the large doors with a loud click, and practically threw myself out of his private chambers.
The heavy doors shut behind me, and I left Kaden’s room shaking all over.
I stumbled down the long hallways, my breathing fast and messy. Tears blurred my vision as I ran straight down the stairs, moving as fast as Stephanie’s legs could carry me. The cold air of the palace brushed against my skin, but it couldn’t stop the hot panic rushing through my veins. Tonight. The deadline was tonight.
I pushed open the door to the room and rushed straight to the side of the bed where my true body was lying.
I dropped heavily into the plastic chair beside myself and completely broke down. I buried my face in my hands, big, hot tears soaking through Stephanie’s fingers. A loud, painful sob tore from my throat, echoing against the quiet walls and the steady, robotic sound of the breathing machine. Beep... beep... beep...
"How did things get like this?" I choked out, my voice cracking as I pulled my hands away to look at my pale, frozen face on the pillow.
I reached out, grabbing my own limp, cold hand and holding it tightly between both of Stephanie’s palms. I brought it up to my lips, kissing my own skin while my chest heaved with heavy sobs.
I kept talking to my unconscious body, desperate for something, anything, to hear me.
"Rebecca, please," I begged, staring at my closed eyelids. "You have to wake up. You have to fight this magic. Kaden is going to turn off the machine tonight. He thinks I’m gone, and he wants to use Stephanie to punish us. He wants to destroy her life just to get back at me."
A wave of bitter jealousy and anger washed over me as I remembered his words, but I pushed it away, focusing entirely on the girl on the bed.
"I won’t let him do it," I whispered fiercely, tightening my grip on my cold hand. "I promise you, Rebecca. I will save you. I will save Stephanie. I don’t care how strong this curse is, I will find a way to drag us back to life. Just give me a sign. Please... give me a sign that you’re still in there."
The machine just continued its endless, mechanical rhythm. No words came. No breath shifted beneath the sheets.
I let out a long, broken sigh, my head dropping forward onto the edge of the mattress as the heavy weight of sadness crushed me. I stared blankly at my own pale skin, completely exhausted from the crying.
But then, right beneath my fingertips, something happened.
I froze, my breath catching instantly in my throat. I stared wide-eyed at my own hand.
A slight, tiny twitch of a finger.
My heart skipped a beat, pounding wildly against my ribs. I sat up straight, watching the hand with absolute intensity, barely even daring to breathe. Did it move? Did my soul finally connect back to my flesh for just one split second?
I waited, my eyes wide and burning, but the hand remained completely still and lifeless again.
A cold wave of doubt hit me. I shook my head slowly, a drop of sweat rolling down my neck. I wasn’t sure if I had actually felt it, or if I was just so desperate and terrified that I had completely imagined it.
