Chapter 1817: Invasion
Chapter 1817: Invasion
—–
Everyone hurried outside the mountain. Breathing in the fresh air, Elayne felt like stretching, only for her eyes to widen at the sound of loud screams and chaos.
“The Undead are here!”
“The Demon King’s army!”
“Defend the walls!”
“All available fighters, go defend the walls!”
“They are attempting to break through the Western Walls! Distribute the forces evenly!”
RUMBLE! BOOOM! CRASH!
“Huh?!”
Everyone’s eyes widened as they took in the utter chaos beyond the city walls. An army of thousands of Undead, Nether Beasts, Bone Beasts, and Ghost Beasts relentlessly assaulted the defenses, clashing fiercely with White Ghost Soldiers.
“Those bastards…” Blank groaned, clenching his teeth. “Elayne, you have to go hide or… Elayne?”
Blank turned and saw Elayne’s face twist in clear fear, old trauma rising to the surface.
Even after running so far, they had found her.
And now they were about to take away the little she had left…
“No…! Why…?!” she kept whispering, tears welling up.
“Elayne?” Mark muttered. “C-Calm down…!”
“Why?! Why are they here?! Why? Why? Why?!” Elayne cried out, sobs breaking through. “Why won’t they leave us alone? Why can’t we hold on to anything… Why can’t I hold anything without it being torn away from me?”
“E-Elayne…” Blank’s heart shattered as he watched her weep in deep sorrow. He realized just how profound her history with the Demon King of Death’s army truly was.
“So you’re related to them, huh?” Chalk sighed. “I knew it… damn it.”
Yaga sighed as well, seeing that Elayne was far from stable and pretending otherwise would not help. “I suppose you found out… everything… We are very sorry.”
Blank, however, felt no anger. He gently took Elayne’s hand. “Elayne, tell me… What did they do to you?”
“L-Lord Blank?” Elayne looked up, surprised by the fierce determination in his eyes.
“Tell me, and I will fight for you… and make all of them pay,” he said, his gaze burning with bloodlust and unwavering resolve. “I promise.”
“…!”
Elayne stood stunned by his sudden, fierce loyalty. Blank had grown far more attached to her than she had ever realized. Now, seeing the woman he had fallen for weeping so brokenly, he could not stand by.
“I…” Elayne took a shaky breath. “We used to be Undead in the Demon King of Death’s camp. We ran away, creating our small group of people. I never thought they would care so much about a couple of Undead but…”
“I see, so that’s how it is,” Chalk said. “I have heard about what happened there. A group of Undead defeated a bunch of higher-ups and then escaped. Among them was a female zombie who could control fungus and moss, using it to weaken everyone in the entire arena. There was also a champion of sorts who had gone completely mad, but whose sanity was healed by this woman… Elayne, you’re this female zombie liberator, and Mark must be the mad champion, right?”
“Yes…” Elayne chose honesty. Her heart trusted these siblings more deeply than she had expected. She had seen their true natures and spent enough time with them to know. “I wonder… if you could ever forgive us for lying to you.”
“Elayne, did you really have to tell them everything?” Yaga facepalmed.
“That just means she trusts them,” Mark said. “I am not thrilled about it either but… they are not untrustworthy people.”
“…It means a lot,” Blank replied softly. “Right, Chalk?”
“Yeah,” Chalk smirked. “Well, we always thought you two were not normal, but revolutionaries who ran away from the Undead Camps? That’s kind of amazing on its own!”
“Y-You’re not mad?” Elayne asked, voice trembling.
“Why would I be?!” Blank exclaimed. “The woman I’ve fallen for is even more incredible now! I see—so you’re a leader, a revolutionary! Perhaps you’re exactly what we needed to stand against the Demon King of Death and his army…”
“The woman you’ve fallen for?!” Mark roared in anger. “So you’re not even bothering to hide it…”
“I’m sorry,” Blank said with a bitter smile. “I am well aware that both of you love one another, and I don’t intend to get in the way of your love. But… I just wanted to be honest with my heart. Through hundreds of years, I never was. I always kept things hidden; I always kept things tucked away. My society demanded that I remain stoic and silent, but my true self, I’ve realized, is not quite like that. Chalk, my sister, understood this long ago. That’s why she’s so different… and why I tried to distance myself from her.”
“Yes, while this idiot was trying his best to fit in, I didn’t care,” Chalk crossed her arms and nodded. “Even among our society, I always knew that some change was needed… I guess you and everyone else, Elayne, have helped us become more open about this. So thank you.”
“Yeah…” Blank offered a warm, genuine smile—one so beautiful it surprised even Elayne. “I know I might never earn your love, but at the very least, I want to stand by your side and help you fulfill your dreams and your goals, Elayne.”
“Blank… Chalk…” Elayne’s eyes filled with tears, overwhelmed by emotion she could barely name.
Thinking these two siblings would change so much because of her—and that she, too, would change so much because of them.
It wasn’t what she had expected.
These connections, these interactions, these bonds were never meaningless.
They had always mattered, and now they mattered more than ever.
“Yes! Thank you! We’ll be right back with you soon! Everyone, let’s move!”
“Alright!”
Mark felt inspired as well. Though he was still a little upset with Blank, he spread four giant blazing wings and soared into the sky, carrying everyone else within his protective aura toward the monastery.
The two White Ghost siblings turned to face the Undead army. Their auras surged powerfully as they gripped their White Void Weapons tightly.
“I always knew our city wouldn’t stay peaceful for long…” Chalk sighed.
“It’s time to show them the pride and strength of the White Ghost Race!” Blank roared.
Inspired by these two powerful nobles, the rest of the soldiers present roared in response, casting aside centuries of tradition that demanded silence and emotionlessness.
“OOOOHHHH!”
The White Ghost Army clashed against thousands of Undead, marking the beginning of the war.
