Bound To The Alpha Brothers [BL]
Chapter 23: A Needed Break
Kai closed the door to his private rooms and let the silence settle. For a long moment he simply stood there, forehead nearly touching the polished wood, and allowed the mask to slip. Inside these walls there was no one left to perform for.
He pushed away from the door, crossed to the low chair near the window, and sat. The morning light felt too bright. He rested his elbows on his knees and pressed the heels of his hands against his eyes until colors bloomed behind the lids.
Liora’s absence was still a physical thing. He still woke up some nights expecting to hear her voice in the adjoining suite, laughing and making some of the most boring political meetings a bit bearable.
Their father had looked at the two of them as the future made flesh—heir and Luna. When the ridge road took her, it had taken the clean version of that future with it. What remained was Kai, standing alone under the full weight of expectation, and two younger brothers who needed him to remain unbreakable even when the house itself was cracking.
Then the full moon had risen and an omega’s uncontrolled heat had torn through the great hall, and the Goddess, cruel, or simply amused, had tied a mate pull to all three of them.
Kai had offered to claim Levi first for a reason that had nothing to do with desire and everything to do with arithmetic. It was simply to take the burden off his younger brothers, and take full responsibility for anything that might come afterwards. His brothers would be free of the complications, and perhaps things might have turned out better than the way they were now.
It had not worked.
Dexter had moved in the dark and taken the claim. Aaron had begun to look at the omega with something that was no longer only temper. And now an Eastridge Alpha walked their grounds with a possessive hand at Levi’s back, speaking of rescue while he simply insulted three Alphas in front of their mate.
Kai exhaled slowly, the breath leaving him like something heavy being set down for a moment that would not last.
He had meetings before midday. Correspondence from two allied packs. A report on the northern border that required his attention before Flora’s family grew any more pointed in their inquiries about a formal date. He could not afford the luxury of sitting here feeling the absence of a sister and the unwanted pull of an omega who had never asked to be anyone’s destiny.
He was still trying to force his mind back to the schedule when the connecting door from the guest suite opened.
Flora entered without knocking.
She wore a robe of deep crimson silk that clung to the lines of her body and parted just enough at the throat to suggest the skin beneath. Her dark hair was loose, and Kai could tell she had not come to sit and discuss with him. She closed the door behind her and regarded him with a small, knowing smile.
"You look tired," she said.
Kai straightened on instinct, the first-heir composure sliding back into place like a well-fitted coat. "Flora. I wasn’t expecting—"
"I know." She crossed the room with unhurried steps, the silk whispering against itself. "You’ve been carrying the house since before dawn, I think you need a break."
She stopped in front of him, her seductive scent now all over the air and teasing Kai more than he had expected. Kai looked up at her and saw the calculation, yes, but also a genuine understanding of the role he was required to play. She had been raised for this seat. She knew the cost of it.
"I don’t need—"
"Yes," she interrupted quietly, "you do."
She untied the robe.
The silk slipped from her shoulders and pooled at her feet. She stood naked in the morning light without apology or hesitation, body strong and elegant, the body of a Luna who had never been anyone’s second choice. Kai’s breath left him in a slow controlled stream. Desire, when it came, was not the bright, unwanted pull he felt toward Levi. It was simpler, a pressure valve that could be opened and closed at will.
Flora stepped between his knees and rested her hands on his shoulders.
"You don’t have to be the heir with me right now," she murmured. "Just for a little while."
He took a deep breath, then reached for her. Perhaps she was right, maybe he needed a break after all.
Their mouths met with none of the tentative exploration of new lovers. This was practiced, a conversation they had already had with bodies when words were too costly. Flora kissed him like she understood the shape of his exhaustion and intended to carve a temporary space inside it. Kai’s hands settled at her waist, then slid higher, mapping the strong curve of her back, the heat of her skin. She made a low sound of approval and pushed the formal jacket from his shoulders.
Pieces of clothing left him in stages. Shirt. Boots. The rest. Flora was patient and relentless in equal measure, guiding him back until he sat fully against the chair and she could straddle him. The first press of her bare heat against him dragged a rough exhale from his throat. For a moment the lists and the obligations receded. There was only the solid weight of her, the clean dominant scent, the deliberate roll of her hips as she took him inside in one slow, controlled motion.
Kai’s head tipped back against the chair. His hands tightened at her hips hard enough to leave faint marks. Flora set the rhythm, deep, steady, unhurried, each movement designed to pull the tension out of him by degrees. She braced her palms on his chest and watched his face with sharp, satisfied attention, as if the cracks in his composure were a private victory.
"That’s it," she whispered. "Let it go. Just for this."
He did. His hands roamed her body with increasing urgency. He sat forward, wrapped an arm around her waist, and met her movements with deeper thrusts that drew sharp, pleased sounds from her throat. The chair creaked, the air whispered, and the morning light painted the sheen of sweat along her collarbone.
Flora kissed him again, open and demanding. He didn’t need to think of anything besides her. Here was only heat, and friction, and the temporary permission to set the burden down.
He came with a low, broken sound against her neck, body locking tight, the release pulled from somewhere deeper than simple physical need. Flora followed a moment later, forehead pressed to his, breath warm and uneven, her own control fraying in the safety of his private rooms.
They stayed like that for a long time, joined, breathing hard, a tired smile playing at both their lips.
Eventually Flora eased away and retrieved the robe, sliding it over her shoulders without haste. She did not speak immediately. She simply rested a hand against his cheek, thumb brushing once along the sharp line of his cheekbone, and looked at him with an expression that contained both affection and clear-eyed assessment.
"The northern packs will not wait forever," she said quietly. "Neither will I. But for now... rest for an hour. The house will still be standing when you open the door again."
Kai watched her leave through the connecting door. The scent of their joining lingered in the air, clean and uncomplicated.
He remained in the chair, bare, the weight of the day already beginning to settle back onto his shoulders.
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
He had one hour, and after that he would put the mask on again and return to the work of holding a fractured house together with his bare hands.
