The heavy military transport skiff sliced through the damp night air, its engines producing a low, steady hum as it glided above the treetops of Silverwood City.

Inside the cabin, soft white lights bathed everything in a sterile glow, reflecting off the reinforced windows and the polished metal walls.

Evelyn sat beside the window, her right hand comfortably wrapped in a clean medical bandage. Her ice-blue eyes remained fixed on the sprawling sea of neon lights below.

The residential district stretched endlessly beneath them, its countless lights fading gradually toward the dark northern foothills.

The chaos of Hollow Basin already felt like something from another lifetime—the scorched earth, shattered blood-runes, and the terrifying realization that the cult had been waiting for them.

Yet the faint smell of ozone and dried blood still lingered somewhere in the back of her mind, refusing to disappear completely.

Beside her, Lucian sat in complete silence, his body sinking naturally into the seat.

His earlier tension had vanished without a trace, replaced by his familiar, relaxed posture—the perfect image of an ordinary, unbothered D-Rank academy student.

His dark eyes reflected the passing city lights, calm and unreadable as ever.

For several moments, neither of them spoke.

Only the quiet vibration of the skiff filled the cabin, accompanied by the distant mechanical hum of the city far below.

Eventually, Evelyn turned her head slightly toward Lucian, breaking the silence.

"The academy report will classify the incident as an isolated containment breach caused by rogue cultists," she said quietly, keeping her voice low enough that the pilot wouldn’t hear them.

"Principal Warren is sealing all records related to Sector 3. Starting tomorrow, the academy’s security protocols will be doubled."

Lucian glanced at her and offered a faint, easygoing smile. "That sounds convenient. Saves everyone a lot of unnecessary paperwork."

Evelyn let out a quiet sigh, though a small, knowing smile tugged at the corners of her lips. She leaned back against the seat and loosely crossed her arms.

"My father will want a full debriefing the moment we step through the doors of the Sterling family manor," she continued, her tone turning thoughtful as she gazed out the window again.

"He always does after a field trial, especially when high-tier anomalies are involved."

Lucian raised an eyebrow, perfectly mimicking the mild curiosity of an innocent student. "Are you planning to tell him about everything that happened in the ravine?"

Evelyn fell silent.

Her mind briefly returned to the devastation of the basin—the scorched earth, the shattered terrain, and the terrifying forty-six-ton impact that had erased a Martial Master in the blink of an eye.

Then there was the silent, unspoken pact they had formed amid the ashes.

She slowly turned back toward Lucian, her gaze steady and unexpectedly warm.

"No," Evelyn said firmly, her voice carrying quiet resolve. "If we tell them everything, the academy and military command will turn your life upside down."

"Investigations, interrogations, security surveillance... you won’t get a moment of peace."

She paused before adding with a faint smile, "Besides, explaining why a D-Rank student casually walked through a Pig-Mask Cult ambush would raise far too many questions."

A teasing glint returned to her ice-blue eyes.

"So let’s just agree to tell them it was a standard containment failure, and that I managed to hold them off long enough for the emergency beacon to reach the patrols."

"It keeps things... peaceful."

Lucian let out a soft chuckle and nodded in agreement. "A very wise strategy, wifey."

His smile widened slightly. "I fully support keeping our domestic lives quiet."

VANCE FAMILY MANOR — PRIVATE STUDY

Miles away, hidden behind towering wrought-iron gates and meticulously maintained winter gardens in Silverwood City’s exclusive upper district, the Sterling family manor stood in quiet grandeur.

Deep within the estate, the private study was bathed in the warm, subdued glow of antique crystal chandeliers.

The room was elegant without being ostentatious, its dark wooden walls lined with old books, framed portraits, and shelves filled with records accumulated over generations.

Yet despite the manor’s peaceful atmosphere, an unusual tension lingered within the study.

Someone was waiting.

Eric’s father sat behind a massive desk carved from dark, polished mahogany. His broad shoulders, sharp jawline, and cold, calculating grey eyes carried the unmistakable authority of a man who controlled half the trade routes and political factions across the northern province.

As the head of House Sterling, almost every major movement within the city eventually found its way to his desk. Yet tonight, a deep and uneasy frown had settled across his normally composed features.

Standing in the center of the Persian rug before him was a tall shadow guard clad in heavy tactical armor. His face remained completely hidden behind a steel visor, while his dark cloak was still damp with the cold mist of the mountains.

He had just delivered the complete report of what had transpired in Sector 3—the sudden collapse of the spatial barrier, the Pig-Mask Cult’s ambush, the destruction of the Blood-Shackle Array, and the inexplicable survival of both Eric and Evelyn.

"Let me get this straight," Eric’s father said at last, his deep, resonant voice slicing through the silence like a blade.

"A high-grade spatial isolation array was established inside Black Snake Ravine by an elite cell of the Pig-Mask Cult. Eric was dragged directly into the formation with Evelyn."

His grey eyes narrowed.

"And Evelyn walked straight into an execution trap that had been designed specifically for her?"

"Yes, Patriarch," the shadow guard replied crisply, lowering his head.

"The tactical data recovered from the perimeter indicates that the cult intended to use Lady Evelyn as a high-value sacrifice for a dark altar."

Eric’s father leaned back slowly in his leather chair, his fingers resting against the polished armrest.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

His index finger began striking the wood in a slow, rhythmic pattern as his mind raced through the implications.

The Pig-Mask Cult had been hunted to the brink of extinction years ago. Their remaining members had scattered into the shadows, their influence reduced to little more than fragmented rumors.

Yet an elite cell had somehow resurfaced inside an academy trial zone.

Worse, they possessed enough resources to construct a high-grade spatial isolation array and bypass the military warding gates surrounding the area.

That wasn’t something a handful of surviving cultists could accomplish on their own.

Eric’s father’s expression grew colder.

Someone powerful was supporting them.

Someone with both immense resources and enough administrative access to move beneath the academy and military’s surveillance without raising suspicion.

And that realization was far more disturbing than the attack itself.

"And how did they escape?" Eric’s father asked, his eyes narrowing sharply. "If the array was active and the cultists were at Martial Master tier... how did two students walk out alive?"

"That is the anomaly, Patriarch," the bodyguard replied. A trace of genuine tension entered his otherwise disciplined voice.

"When the military rescue forces breached the barrier, the cultists were already dead. Their bodies had been reduced to nothing but dried husks."

"The entire clearing had been devastated by an overwhelming force. Principal Warren believes an unknown high-tier anomaly—or possibly a rogue master—intervened."

Eric’s father fell silent.

His gaze settled on the intricate grain of the mahogany desk, but he wasn’t really looking at it.

His mind was already moving across a far more complicated chessboard—noble politics, academy rivalries, military factions, and the hidden syndicates operating beneath the city’s polished surface.

Evelyn wasn’t merely another academy student.

She was the crown jewel of the Sterling family.

If she had died inside that ravine, the northern military factions would have demanded blood, and the resulting conflict could have escalated into an all-out war.

Yet she had survived.

And somehow, his own reckless son had survived alongside her.

The coincidence was too clean.

Far too clean.

After a long, suffocating silence, Eric’s father finally raised his head.

His grey eyes settled on the kneeling bodyguard, cold and calculating, carrying the unquestionable authority of the head of House Sterling.

"Listen to me carefully," Eric’s father said.

His voice dropped into a low, commanding whisper.

"The political fallout from this cult resurgence is going to shake the entire academy."

"People will start searching for answers. They will look for scapegoats, hidden enemies, and weak points they can exploit."

Eric’s father slowly rose from behind his desk.

Without another word, he walked toward the tall arched window overlooking the dark winter gardens outside.

Moonlight spilled across the glass, illuminating only half of his expression.

"Take a squad of our elite Shadow Trackers," Eric’s father ordered, keeping his back toward the guard.

"Go to the outskirts of the Sterling family’s residential sector."

He paused for a moment.

"I want you to watch over Evelyn."

Another brief silence followed.

"And keep an eye on that commoner boy, Lucian, who was with her."

The shadow guard blinked beneath his steel visor.

For the first time since entering the study, genuine surprise appeared in his voice.

"Patriarch... you want us to protect them?"

"Not to protect them," Eric’s father corrected sharply, turning around to pin the guard with a piercing stare.

"Listen carefully to my orders. You will remain strictly within the shadows. Do not interfere with their daily lives, and under no circumstances are you to let Evelyn or her personal guards know that you are there."

He raised a single finger, his expression turning colder.

"That is the most important rule."

"You observe. You report. Nothing more."

His gaze hardened.

"Whatever force was pulling the strings inside that ravine must not be given a second opportunity to finish what it started."

"Understood, Patriarch."

The shadow guard bowed deeply before turning on his heel.

A moment later, he disappeared through the heavy oak doors without making a sound, vanishing like a ghost swallowed by the darkness beyond.

Eric’s father remained alone in the study.

He slowly turned back toward the tall window, his gaze settling on the dark gardens outside as the cold autumn wind swept through the branches.

Something about tonight’s events continued to bother him.

He couldn’t explain it.

He couldn’t prove it.

But the instincts he had relied upon for decades were screaming that the incident at Black Snake Ravine was only the beginning.

The game board had changed.

And the pieces were no longer moving according to the rules.
