Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign
Chapter 374: More Than the Label
The attendant at the arena-district desk recognized Ren from the cutting lane and the press.
"Which bay?"
"I need a sparring partner this time. Someone who’ll make me pay for a mistake."
"Unarmed?"
"Unarmed and grounded. With room to move."
The man opened a roster. "Neral Venn takes those bookings. Bloodline instructor, Stage Seven. Ring-out or surrender, with reinforcement, footing and defensive workings allowed. No offensive arts, weapons or worn armor."
Ren considered the terms. He wanted to test what happened when an opponent could meet him at close range and keep fighting.
"That suits me."
"I’ll ask him. If he agrees, we’ll book the heavy ring."
The attendant took Ren’s declared output and the workings he intended to use. Venn would have to confirm his own before the district assigned the ground and supervision.
Ren left the desk with the request entered. The reply came that evening: Venn had agreed, and the ring was available the following afternoon.
— • —
Yuelan asked to watch as soon as Ren told her.
He added her name to the booking. The supervisor permitted her behind the protected rail, with no calling instructions during the bout.
"I can do that," she said.
"The whole bout?"
"For you. Once."
The heavy ring lay beyond the practice lanes and the press bay. Its fitted stone floor bore pale scars from earlier workings. A boundary line formed a wide circle, with a rough strip of stone outside it. Farther back stood an iron rail behind a barrier that shimmered when the attendant opened the spectator gate.
Yuelan took her place there. Ren left his coat by the entrance and went to meet Venn.
The instructor was lean, his hair tied back and his arms bare. He watched Ren approach, then offered his hand.
"Venn."
"Ren."
They shook hands. Beside them, the supervisor checked the booking on her slate. A healer waited near the door with her case.
"Both feet outside the line is a loss," the supervisor said. "Surrender ends it immediately, as does my call. Controlled blows and holds are permitted. No deliberate lasting injury. Raised defenses stay within the ring and clear of a standing opponent."
Venn nodded. Ren did the same.
"And neither of you wears armor."
Ren removed his seed-torc and the smaller seeds at his wrists, heels and spine, and gave them to the attendant for safekeeping. The glass guards were already off; the scored forearm piece remained on the craftsperson’s bench. He stepped onto the stone in ordinary clothes, flexing the hand that had gone numb at Saltmarch.
Venn rolled his shoulders and walked to his starting mark. The supervisor inspected their equipment, then moved clear.
Ren raised Titanhide before taking his position. Across from him, Venn’s breathing slowed, and the loose set of his arms changed as his reinforcement gathered.
The supervisor lowered her hand.
"Begin."
— • —
Ren advanced and met Venn near the center.
Their forearms struck together. Venn took the contact without being driven back, his weight settled over his feet. Ren planted his own boots and set Holdfast, then pressed harder through the meeting of their arms.
Venn’s arm remained firm. His body moved.
He stepped just outside Ren’s push and caught his upper arm. A hand reached Ren’s shoulder, turning it across his planted stance. Ren tried to follow with his hips, but his boots held where he had set them.
For an instant his shoulders and feet faced different directions.
He released Holdfast before the twist could take his knee. Venn drove through that release, forcing him into a hurried sideways step, then another. Ren pulled his arm free and retreated far enough to face him again.
Venn followed.
There was no pause to reset. He reached for the same shoulder, and Ren planted to resist it. The hand withdrew before Ren could catch it. Venn changed sides, brought his forearm inside Ren’s guard and struck with his shoulder.
Titanhide held. The impact still drove Ren’s breath out and forced him back.
He released his footing and took two quick steps to stay upright. The pale boundary was close behind his heel.
Venn came after him with a hand reaching for his chest.
Ren knocked it aside and moved along the inside of the circle. Venn turned with him, cutting off the direct path back to the center. Ren kept moving until he had room to stop without putting his next step outside the line.
Behind the rail, Yuelan gripped the iron with both hands.
Ren drew a breath. His chest ached where the shoulder had struck. Venn stood between him and the center, balanced and ready to close again.
The instructor had met his strength at the first contact. After that, he had made Ren waste it.
Ren had expected the anchor to let him push harder. Instead, Venn had turned his upper body while his feet stayed fixed, then hit him as he tried to recover. On the second approach, Ren had planted before he knew where the real contact would come.
He loosened his stance. Titanhide could remain active while he moved. He did not have to brace for every hand Venn put toward him.
— • —
Venn advanced before Ren had fully recovered his breath.
This time Ren kept Holdfast released. He moved toward the reaching arm, deflected it and stepped outside it before setting his feet. When Venn tried to turn him, Ren’s hips were already facing the pressure.
He anchored long enough to resist the pull.
Venn changed direction at once.
Ren felt the shift through their arms and released his footing before following. He was still slower. Venn broke contact, stepped across his front and began closing from the side Ren had left open.
Ren raised Stonewall ahead of that approach.
The low barrier rose across the path between them, clear of Venn’s feet. Venn checked his step and went around its nearer end. He lost little time, but Ren used it to move off the boundary and turn toward him.
He lowered the wall once Venn was clear of it. The floor settled behind the instructor, leaving their next steps unobstructed.
Venn reached him before Ren could regain the center.
Their forearms met again. Ren took the pressure with both feet beneath him and Titanhide firm along his arms. Venn caught his upper arm, trying to pull him across his stance.
Ren let his rear foot move.
The pull turned him, but this time his hips and shoulders turned together. He stepped closer instead of straining against his own anchor, bringing his chest against Venn’s shoulder and his hand above the instructor’s elbow.
Venn tried to pull clear. Ren kept the contact.
They moved through a tight half-circle, each trying to put the other between himself and the boundary. Ren could feel Venn’s reinforcement resisting through the arm. He could also feel the change in weight before the next turn began.
He stepped across the turn and set his feet.
For a moment they were both still.
Ren had the angle he wanted.
— • —
He applied Holdfast and drove through his legs and shoulder.
Venn resisted. His stance held the first pressure, and his hand tightened on Ren’s upper arm. Ren increased the force until the instructor had to step back.
Ren released Holdfast to follow.
Venn tried to turn him during the advance. Ren kept his elbow close and moved his feet with the pressure, preserving the chest-to-shoulder contact. Once his boots were down, he anchored again.
The next drive took Venn back another step.
The pale line came into view beyond the instructor’s heel. Ren could reach it from here, but only if he kept the contact through the next advance.
Venn dropped his weight and pulled down on Ren’s arm.
Ren bent his knees with him. The pull dragged at his shoulder without folding his stance. He released the anchor, moved forward and set it again as Venn tried to wrench him sideways.
The instructor’s back foot crossed the line.
He hooked an ankle behind Ren’s leg and turned sharply, trying to bring him down before his other foot followed. Ren felt his balance begin to go. He released Holdfast, freed the caught leg and stepped wider, keeping his shoulder against Venn.
Venn tried to turn out through the opening.
Ren drove across that turn with the strength he had left unused during the adjustment. The instructor’s remaining foot lifted from inside the ring and landed on the rough strip beyond the pale line.
"Out," the supervisor called. "Bout to Valis."
Ren stopped pushing and opened his hands.
Venn stepped back clear of him. Both stood breathing hard, looking down at the boundary between their feet.
Then Venn looked up.
"That was out."
Ren nodded, too short of breath to answer.
— • —
The healer called them over before they left the ring. Ren held out his arms, then bent and straightened them as she asked. Both ached from the contact, but his hands moved freely and he had no sharp pain when he took a full breath.
She checked Venn next while Ren waited beside the rail.
Yuelan had let go of the iron. She looked from him to the line where the bout had ended, then back again.
Venn returned and held out his hand.
Ren shook it.
"I couldn’t stop that last drive," the instructor said. "You kept your feet under you."
"The first two went badly."
"You planted where I wanted you. Then you stopped doing it."
Ren glanced at the place Stonewall had risen. Without the time it bought, Venn would have reached his side before he could turn. He had found one answer to the instructor’s speed; he hadn’t become faster than him.
"I’d like another session," Venn said.
"I’ve got a field assignment."
"After you return, then. Ask the desk for me."
"I will."
Venn thanked the supervisor and went to collect his coat. Ren waited while the attendant opened the spectator gate for Yuelan.
"He turned you twice," she said.
"I noticed."
"Around your own foot."
Ren looked at her.
"I wasn’t allowed to say it then."
"You can stop saving it up now."
She grinned and glanced toward Venn, who was speaking to the healer by the door.
"He couldn’t get away at the end."
"No."
Ren let himself enjoy saying it. Venn had resisted the finish, changed his footing and tried to bring him down. Ren had kept the advantage long enough to put him outside.
The attendant returned his seeds. Ren fastened the torc at his collar and the smaller seeds in their places, then put on his coat.
He wanted to practice the first part again: moving while Titanhide held, and choosing when to anchor instead of planting as soon as he expected a hit. Today he had managed it with Venn’s hands on him. Repeating it against a different approach would take work.
Yuelan waited by the door while he thanked the supervisor.
— • —
A message from the survey office was waiting on his slate when they stepped outside.
Carrow Offset Stretch. Scheduled inspection window confirmed. Report to Surveyor Enna Lisk at the Carrow post on arrival. Reporting arrangements attached.
Ren opened the attachment and compared the reporting time and post location with his booked travel. The arrangements matched. He saved the confirmation beside the earlier appointment.
"Carrow?" Yuelan asked.
"Yes. The survey job."
"The road?"
"The stretch where people arrive off their route. We’re helping check positions and mark the safe ground."
She looked at the slate, then at him.
"When do you leave?"
He showed her the booking. There was time to get his things ready and review the site instructions before departure.
Yuelan handed the slate back.
"Then eat something first."
Ren put it away and went with her.
