Light climbed through the Worldroot beneath Ren’s left hand.

He felt warmth moving up the bark before he saw the trunk brighten. It spread from the oldest roots toward the crown, reaching branch after branch as it had when the sunken world came home. Kaia’s attention gathered through their bond, her excitement rising with the inflow.

The light reached the leaves and shone through them, picking out the veins overhead. Ren could see the same glow farther along the exposed roots, where it followed the wood down toward the water. Beneath his palm, the bark remained solid and warm.

[MERGE: INITIATED.]

[PLANAR ENERGY INFLOW: FROM THE BOUNDLESS SEA OF PLANES.]

Ren kept his hand against the tree and looked down at the pocket.

Loom’s current passed gently around the submerged roots. Wick remained on the bank, its light falling across the water where the small gold body rested against the wood. The princess’s shoulder stayed formed as the roots brightened beneath her hands.

Beyond the flower field, the arch stood above the northern beach. The early migrants had gathered near it, with their fires sheltered along the waterline. Ren could see people coming up onto the sand and turning toward the brightened tree.

He looked out across the silver sea.

Far beyond the familiar islands, the world was expanding. More water appeared between the distant land and the horizon as new coast extended into view. The nearer shores remained intact, with the islands standing clear above their reflections, while the space beyond them widened.

Then the sky opened over the incoming region.

Dark cloud filled the opening, heavy with smoke and ash. Its edge stood sharply against the clear sky above Ren’s sea. Beneath it, haze obscured most of what was arriving, but he could see a broad reach of black water meeting the silver at the same level.

The ash bank extended along the horizon, with darker layers behind it where he couldn’t yet distinguish cloud from the silhouettes of land. Below, the black surface caught little of the light shining on his sea. He watched that boundary lengthen as more of the fragment arrived.

He had watched the first ocean come down in walls and sheets. This time he watched for the effect on the inhabited shores. No breaking front swept toward them. The black water settled beside the silver, its slow swells already moving beneath the cloud.

Through the thinning haze, volcanic islands became visible.

They emerged with water around their bases and dark ground extending between the channels. Nothing fell from the opening to strike the sea. The fragment was arriving with its landscape still connected, and Ren’s world continued growing around it.

He found a blue flame among the islands.

It rose higher than the nearby lights, visible through the haze where he expected Tide to be. From this distance, he couldn’t examine the platforms beneath it. He watched the flame hold while red and white points appeared farther across the region, followed by a faint green one.

There were people around those lights, still standing on their own ground. Ren thought of the tender beside Tide’s young fires and kept watching until the distant coastline stopped extending. Swells continued across the black water, meeting the movement of his existing sea.

Nearer the familiar islands, the pod had turned toward the arrival. Dark backs broke the silver surface, then lowered again as the whales moved through the open water. Ren could follow a few of their shapes beneath it before they passed too far from the shore.

The light in the Worldroot eased.

Ren recognized the conditions and turned back to the pocket.

[LIVING CORE: RETAINED AT THE WORLDROOT.]

The princess slept with one small hand against a root. Her colors remained gathered within the gold, and her Heartflame was still the same small light inside her chest. Loom’s current moved past her without disturbing the unfinished outline.

Ren watched her while the roots returned to their usual glow, then took his hand from the bark and headed toward the beach.

The light in the arch had gone out.

Its grey stones still stood above the sand, but the opening showed only the beach beyond. An adult from one of the early families put a hand through and looked around the side of the stone. Nearby, another kept a Cinder close while watching the dark clouds across the water.

The Stillfire keeper stood apart from them, facing the new region.

Ren pointed toward the cloud bank as he passed. Several people followed the gesture. Their homes were inside now, though there was a stretch of unfamiliar water between this beach and the ledge they had left.

A family had left its bundles beside the arch while its members went to look from the waterline. Their Lawfires remained in the sheltered shallows. Farther along, the keeper turned from the cloud bank toward the empty arch, then back to the sea without approaching either.

He went down to the waterline and waited.

Keep’s link reached him before he saw Ward. The first report carried a position out on the water, already old by the time Ren received it. Another arrived later, closer to the shore. From the change, he could tell that Ward was approaching.

The whale’s back appeared beyond the shallows, with Riptide swimming ahead. Keep remained between Ward’s shoulders, and Balm was still tending its tail. Farther out, the elder’s blue Lawfire followed their route, remaining in deeper water while Ward came toward the sand.

Ren waded out and climbed onto the whale’s back. He checked Keep’s place between the shoulders, then settled where he could see ahead as Ward turned toward the new region.

The elder’s flame came alongside them on the way out. It stayed low on the surface, keeping pace while Riptide led them across the open water.

— • —

The change came gradually as they approached the ash bank.

Silver water darkened beneath Ward. Ren trailed his fingers beside the whale and felt the warmth increase, carrying the familiar scent of the Burning Sea. Thin streaks of darker water stretched back into the silver behind them as the currents mixed.

Overhead, the cloud thickened until the light grew dim. Ren looked back once. The edge that had seemed sharp from the Worldroot was ragged up close, with wisps spreading into the clearer sky.

Keep’s next position report still placed Ward behind them, on the silver side. Ren let it pass. The link could reach him within the joined world, but the reports retained their usual delay; he had no reason to use them over what he could see from the whale’s back.

Riptide turned into the routes between the islands.

Pale stone choked part of a channel ahead. The petrified water had arrived with the rest of the fragment, and Ward followed the open stretch around it. The merge had preserved the passage as it was, including the obstruction.

Past the black headland, Ren caught sight of the Glass Hearth’s ring. It remained dark, with no new flame showing where the old one had gone out.

Any surviving raiders still in the fragment had come across too. Their souls were rooted under the same conditions as everyone else’s, but that hadn’t erased what they had done or settled their quarrels with the other Hearths. Ren would need to know who remained and where they were.

For now, Tide’s platforms were coming into view.

— • —

The blue Hearthfire stood in the center of its ring, burning steadily above the water.

Ren could see the bridges clearly now. Each remained joined to the platforms on either side, and the young fires drifted in their sheltered water beneath the larger flame. Tenders moved along the inner edge, stopping to check the fire and the small shapes gathered below it.

Families stood farther out with bundles at their feet. Some looked beyond the familiar channels toward the silver water, while others were occupied with their own belongings. A household had opened its jars on the stone, checking the contents before setting them back against the wall.

Beside them, an adult lifted a Cinder high enough to see over the platform’s edge.

The Glassfire remained near the lowest bridge with their Lawfires floating below. Several faced the headland. The craftsperson stood among them, one hand resting on the tools across its chest as it looked toward the dark ring beyond.

Ward brought Ren alongside the landing. The elder rose from its Lawfire onto the stone, climbed two steps and turned toward him.

[SCOPE: INTEGRATED RESIDENTS.]

"The families who crossed before us—where are they?"

Ren paused with one foot on the landing. The elder’s voice was low and even, and the question had reached him in words. It waited while he stepped fully onto the stone.

"On the northern shore, near the arch. Across the silver water. I’ll show your guides the way."

The elder looked toward the tenders on the platform above.

"Find someone from each household. Their people will want to know we arrived."

Two tenders left at once. Ren watched them go, then looked back at the elder. It had heard the location and acted on it without another gesture from him.

"Where’s the ledge now?" he asked.

"At the edge of the dark water. The road to it is open." The elder indicated the route behind Ward. "The witness is still sitting there. The families are with the guides, and the two Nightfire have stayed to watch."

Ren glanced along the water, placing the ledge in relation to the route they had taken. Asking about it had taken only a few words. He no longer had to wait for the elder to guess what he needed to know.

He followed it up the steps.

Spear approached from the direction of the inner platforms and stopped before him.

"Ren."

"Tarin."

The guide nodded. "Which road reaches the northern shore?"

"Follow our route out of the islands, then cross the silver water. Ward can lead the first trip." Ren looked toward the guides gathering below. "It’s colder on that side. Let the families know before they leave."

"I’ll tell them."

Spear went down to the waiting guides. Ren watched it stop beside the first and begin explaining, then continued along the ring.

— • —

The tender with the bowl was crouched above the young fires.

Ren recognized it from his earlier walk. It held the bowl close and fed the small flames one after another, pausing while each settled back among the others. When it noticed him, it looked up briefly, then lowered its attention to the next fire.

He remained beside the bridge for a moment before moving on.

The elder joined him near the Hearthfire, its gaze passing from the blue flame to the cloud overhead.

"Our sky followed us."

"The smoke and ash came with the rest," Ren said. "They’re already spreading at the edges. I don’t know how long the cover will last."

The elder looked toward the lighter strip beyond the islands.

"The families on your shore have seen what’s above it?"

"Yes. Clear sky and daylight."

It watched the distant light a little longer before returning to the tenders. Ren stayed near the bridge, listening to voices he could finally understand as people called between the platforms.

Most were asking after relatives, checking loads or sending someone to look at a landing. Ren could follow the exchanges without looking toward the elder. He stepped aside as a hauler carried its jars past, then watched the guides gather near Ward.

— • —

The Nightfire speaker arrived from its Hearth while the guides were gathering at the landing.

Its Lawfire approached over the black water, difficult to distinguish from the surface until it came near the stone. The speaker rose onto the landing and climbed toward Ren. Its voice, when it stopped before him, was clipped and low.

"Will your daylight reach our Hearth?"

"When the ash clears, yes. What will your fire need?"

The Nightfire looked toward the lighter sky beyond Tide before answering.

"Shade around the Hearth. We keep it beneath a rock shelf. If the light reaches under it, we’ll need more cover."

"Send a guide when your people are ready. I’ll come look at the shelf with whoever tends your fire."

"We will."

It held his gaze for another moment, then turned toward the steps. Its manner had lost none of the coldness from their earlier exchange, but it had brought him a concern he could help address.

Ren watched the speaker descend to its Lawfire. Around the landing, the guides continued assembling their first group for the northern shore. Spear was pointing out the route to the elder while Ward waited below with Riptide beside it.

He looked beyond them toward the meeting of the waters.

Beyond Tide’s outer platforms, the edge of the ash cloud had begun to spread over the silver water.
