Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign
Chapter 280: The Core Is Alive
The surges around the outcrop had weakened enough to expose a crack near its base.
Ren watched water rise over the opening and drain away again while Riptide held his sheet nearby. Heat still came from the vent above, and each wave carried loose grit out of the fissure. When the next one withdrew, he could see a ledge running along the inner wall.
"Wait here. I’ll look first."
Ward remained at the outer landing with Balm tending its tail and Keep secure between its shoulders. Spear climbed onto the rock above the entrance, its Lawfire floating in sheltered water below. Riptide steadied the current while Ren stepped from the sheet onto the ledge.
He ducked into the crack.
The passage sloped inward, partly flooded, with enough room to wade beside the ledge. Ren used the rock where the water deepened, keeping his stiff right hand close to his body. Heat came through the walls, and he maintained a thin covering as the daylight behind him dwindled.
At a bend, he stopped to test the next foothold before putting his weight on it. The ledge continued beyond, and water flowed freely beside it. He looked back once to fix the turning in his mind, then continued along the rock.
A low glow showed ahead.
The crack widened into a chamber about the size of a room. A ledge followed one wall beside a shallow pool connected to the passage. Ren saw no fitted stones or carved steps, only wet rock worn along the waterline.
A small fire floated in the pool.
— • —
It barely reached his knee. Pale gold surrounded shifting colors: red near the center, blue moving along one side, white and violet appearing as the flame turned.
An arm began to form above it.
Ren stopped on the ledge. The arm was small and thin, ending in a child’s hand. A shoulder followed, then the beginning of a head. As the body gathered, the colors settled together within the gold, each still visible beneath its surface.
The hand opened before the shoulder failed. The arm folded back into the flame, and the head lost its outline. Blue and violet separated again, moving through the smaller shape on the water.
Ren knelt while it tried once more. ℯℯ𝑙.
He had known the core was alive, but he’d still expected something he could support and carry, like the warm sphere he’d taken from the drowned world. Here, there was no settled shape to lift.
The little body formed farther this time. He saw the curve of a cheek and the narrow chest beneath it before both blurred away.
[LINEAGE: ROYAL.]
[HEARTFLAME: INCOMPLETE.]
[BIRTH CLASSIFICATION: MIRACLE.]
[STATUS: DYING.]
Ren moved closer to the pool.
When the chest appeared again, he could see the Heartflame inside it. The forming body shuddered around that small light, then fell back into the fire. He watched where the shape broke, trying to understand what failed first.
Royal told him little about how to help her. Dying was clear enough.
The next hand had fewer fingers than the one before. Ren watched them fold inward without closing on anything. She kept trying to make a body, but he couldn’t judge her condition from the largest shape she managed to hold for a moment.
He dipped the fingertips of his left hand into the pool. The water was warm, moving gently through the channel beside the ledge. No moss grew along its edge, and he could see nothing there that he recognized as food for a Pyreborn.
Ren kept his own cold water clear of the pool and lowered his hand farther.
— • —
He sent a small Life working through the warm water toward her flame.
The next arm formed more fully. Ren held the flow steady while the shoulder gathered above it, followed by the head. The colors settled together, and the little hand remained open long enough for him to see the unfinished fingers.
Then the body broke apart again. The flame beneath it stayed alight.
Ren waited through another attempt before increasing the support a little. The shape held longer, but it still failed around the incomplete chest. He eased the flow back to the level that had helped and watched her gather herself again.
He checked the warmth against his wrist. It hadn’t changed appreciably, and he kept his cold covering from mixing into it as he worked. The improvement followed his Life reaching her, though he still knew very little about the flame receiving it.
He could support what she was forming. More of the same working wasn’t supplying whatever she lacked.
The Tidefire guard had been similar. Balm had steadied its damaged water-body, but the Heartflame remained small beneath the moss on its chest. Keeping the guard alive had not restored what the raiders had taken.
Ren looked at the little fire’s next attempt. Her arm held while the shoulder trembled. He adjusted the flow slightly, and the trembling eased, though the shape still folded back after a while.
He kept supporting her.
There was room along the ledge to reach the passage without leaving the water. Ren moved toward it with his left hand trailing in the shallow channel, maintaining the working as he went.
"Spear!"
The call echoed toward the entrance. He waited until blue light showed on the wet walls, then returned to the pool.
— • —
Spear emerged from its Lawfire at the chamber mouth and stopped on the ledge. Its flame remained in the flooded channel beside it.
Ren pointed toward the pool. Spear watched the small arm gather, hold and fall apart before looking back at him.
He indicated the passage toward Tide, then beckoned toward the chamber. Spear glanced at the fire once more, returned to its Lawfire and left.
Ren settled beside the pool again. He could hear water moving through the crack after the blue light disappeared, but the chamber itself was quiet apart from the fire.
He rested his right hand on his knee and kept the left submerged. The little body continued trying to form, holding longer wherever his working reached it. He watched each attempt, adjusting the support when it began to shake.
By the time blue light returned along the passage, he knew which part of the shoulder would fail before the arm folded.
He had tried supporting that point more closely. It delayed the break, but another part of the outline loosened instead. Ren returned to the gentler flow through the pool, letting her gather the shape herself rather than trying to hold each piece in place.
— • —
The elder came onto the ledge with its Lawfire in the water beside it. Spear stayed near the entrance, leaving room for it to approach.
The elder stopped when the small head formed above the pool. Ren watched it lower the hand it had raised toward him. Its gaze stayed on the fire as the shape dissolved.
[CONCEPT: ROYAL.]
[CONCEPT: MANY. FIRES. TOGETHER.]
It indicated the colors within the gold, then brought its hands closer together.
[CONCEPT: GROW. HEARTHS. STEADY.]
Ren looked from the gesture to the pool. If she matured, she might help different Hearthfires hold together. He thought of the Glass Hearth’s low flame and the empty water where it had burned.
[CONCEPT: BORN. TOO. LATE.]
The elder’s hands lowered. Beyond the chamber, the volcano still rumbled, shaking a few drops from the rock above the passage.
Ren indicated his submerged hand, then the body trying to form over the flame. He lifted his free palm in a question.
The elder watched the next attempt and looked back at him. It offered no further concept. Ren couldn’t tell whether it lacked an answer or a way to give him one.
He turned back to the pool before the shoulder began to fail again. The Life working was helping, and he could continue that much.
— • —
After the next collapse, her flame turned toward his hand.
It moved closer to the ledge, the gold inclining toward him while the other colors gathered along that side. Ren held still as a narrow tongue of fire reached over the water between them.
"She’s reaching, Ren."
He lowered his fingers within reach.
The Pyreborn had sensed the world he carried before they understood anything else about him. Ren turned his attention to the Worldroot and drew its support through the connection, carrying it into the working already reaching her.
The gold steadied around his fingertips.
An arm gathered, then a shoulder and the small head. The outline remained unfinished, but it held while the colors settled together within it. Ren watched the place where the shoulder had always failed. It trembled once, then stayed.
Her fingers closed around one of his.
He felt a slight pressure and warmth against his skin. The hand had hardly any weight, but it stayed formed as he continued the flow. He kept his own fingers still, giving her something to hold without trying to lift her from the water.
[WORLDROOT CONTACT: TEMPORARY STABILIZATION.]
[FULL MATURATION REQUIRES COMPATIBLE NURTURING MATERIAL.]
[COMPATIBLE MATERIAL: NONE IN HOST’S INVENTORY.]
Ren read the lines without changing the working.
There was a requirement his support alone couldn’t meet. The System hadn’t named the material or told him where to find it, but it had distinguished keeping her stable from completing her growth.
For now, the shoulder held. The Heartflame inside the narrow chest was still small, and the fingers around his remained only partly formed.
He adjusted his elbow against the ledge, easing the flow briefly as he moved. Her grip loosened and blue began separating from the gold along her arm.
Ren steadied the supply before the shape broke. The colors settled, and her fingers tightened again.
At the entrance, the elder watched his hand. Spear remained beside its flame in the passage, leaving the narrow approach clear.
Ren kept the connection steady while finding a better place for his elbow. He could feel the Worldroot through the working and the slight warmth of her hand against his finger. Nothing in her chest had grown to replace what was missing, but she was no longer falling apart with every attempt to stand.
He shifted closer so she wouldn’t have to reach.
