Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign
Chapter 276: He Came Back Bigger
The heat caught Ren as he stepped onto the shelf, but this time he kept walking.
He reached the edge before he thought to brace against it. The air still burned in his nose, and the stone was hot beneath his boots, but he could breathe without forcing each breath. Behind him, Ward came through with Keep secure between his shoulders, followed by the others.
Ren drew water from storage and spread it over Ward’s flank, then Anvil’s shell, keeping Balm clear. He adjusted the flow as they entered the shallows. Holding it against the heat took less effort now; he could tend the covering and look for Spear without having to stop for either.
Spear stood in the water below the shelf.
It started toward him, paused, then came the rest of the way. Ren waited while it looked over his chest and hands. Its blue Lawfire brightened on the water behind it, and two fingers touched his sleeve.
[CONCEPT: WORLD. STRONG.]
[DANGER TO HOST: LOW.]
Ren glanced at the second line. Spear held the same weapon, and its chest coal burned as steadily as before. The change was on his side.
It pointed away from Tide, along the road, then returned to its flame. Ren climbed onto Ward beside Keep’s cradle, and they followed it into the sea.
— • —
The first stretch passed between rocks Ren recognized. Beyond them, Spear took a turning toward the middle of the sea and slowed beside a low ledge.
A pale line of fire stretched across the distant water.
It advanced slowly from the glow beneath the smoke. Behind it, the surface burned pale and steady, making the separate floating fires difficult to pick out. Ren found a red flame near the edge of the burn and watched until the spreading light hid it.
Spear brought them closer to a crossing, then manifested beside the ledge. Two flat landing stones stood between the islands, with open water around them. Pale fire had reached both. The far landing was almost lost in the continuous burn.
Ren took out the glass marker he’d been given and held it toward Spear. It followed the notches with a fingertip, stopped at one, and pointed across the stones toward the passage beyond.
He looked along that direction. There was no clear stretch left between the landing and the pale water behind it.
Ward shifted beneath him. Ren checked the water covering the whale’s flank and directed him back toward the ledge, where the smaller fires still burned separately. Spear returned the rod before leading them away.
They joined a road toward Tide and stopped at another crossing. This one remained clear. One of its two landing stones was split down the middle, the crack full of water. Ren stepped onto it from Ward’s back and tested his footing before looking out across the channel.
Another pale line was approaching from the same direction as the first. There was still open water between it and the stones.
Spear pointed from the crossing toward Tide. Ren followed the line of rocks back with his eyes, then climbed onto Ward again.
Nearer the settlement, the road divided. Spear indicated the branch toward the arch, then the one they had just taken. The approaching fire had not reached their way home, but it was coming toward the junction both roads used.
— • —
They saw the raiders beyond a field of jagged stone.
The group was moving away from the advancing fire, keeping close to the rocks. Patched bodies rose beside dull-orange Lawfires. One stood taller than the rest, and Ren watched it long enough for a panel to appear.
[HEARTFLAME: DEVOURFIRE.]
[HEARTFLAME GRADE: FURNACE.]
[DANGER TO HOST: HIGH.]
The leader at the Glass Hearth had rated SEVERE. Ren remembered the pull that had dragged him across the platform even with a captive held in both hands.
This Furnace turned toward its companions and continued between the rocks. None approached the road. Ren kept watching until stone hid them, then followed Spear toward Tide.
— • —
People crowded the lower platforms around the Tide Hearth. Families kept their Cinders close while haulers passed jars and bundles up from the water. Their Lawfires gathered beside the stonework, leaving narrow gaps for those arriving.
The Stillfire keeper sat with its hands in its lap. Beyond it, the courier crossed between two platforms in a bright burst and stopped beside a Steamfire carrying a jar.
Ren found the Glassfire near the lowest bridge.
One stood with its damaged chest turned toward the water. He recognized the fracture through which the Furnace leader had drawn its Heartflame. The coal remained small behind it, but the Glassfire was standing unaided, its good hand resting on a bundle beside its foot.
A Cinder pressed close to another adult’s leg. More sheltered behind them, among the belongings brought up from the sea.
Ren had left these people at their own Hearth. He looked toward Spear, but the elder was already coming down the steps. It followed his gaze to the Glassfire, then spoke.
[CONCEPT: GLASS. GONE.]
The elder pointed along the road they had taken to the Glass Hearth before, then descended toward its Lawfire. Spear waited for Ren beside Ward.
He climbed back on, and they followed the elder around the island.
— • —
The ring of platforms came into view beyond the black headland.
Ren could see through the middle to the stonework on the far side. The low white-orange Hearthfire was gone. Water moved through the space beneath it, dark between the empty platforms.
He climbed onto the nearest landing. No workers met them, and the bridges carried only what had been left behind: a chipped block, fragments of glass, a bundle of stone splinters beside an unfinished repair.
Ren walked to the inner edge and crouched where the Cinders had gathered. He put his hand on the stone. It was cold enough to draw the warmth from his palm.
The last time he’d stood here, he’d waited for the Hearthfire to rise after the wind bent it. It had recovered only to the same low height.
He left his hand there while a ripple struck the platform below it. Behind him, the elder waited near the landing.
Even if he stopped the fire spreading from the middle of the sea, this Hearth would still be out. He could keep the road open long enough to get its people away.
Ren stood and went back to Ward.
— • —
On their return to Tide, he climbed to the highest platform overlooking the approaches.
The smoke hid much of the sea. Through it, he could follow stretches of pale water toward the distant glow, though the islands broke his view of the crossings themselves.
[WORLD FIRE — DANGER TO HOST: EXTREME.]
Ren read the line, then looked across the water between himself and the glow. There were rock fields to pass, islands he couldn’t see beyond, and spreading fronts cutting across the roads.
Below him, a hauler waited while a family made room for its jar. Ren turned from the panel and went down to the pack.
— • —
He tested the pocket-stone in the shallows below Tide, clear of the natives’ gathered Lawfires. The water there was warmer than on his previous visit.
Ren supplied the stone with the same flow of planar energy he’d used at home. The water darkened around his hand, but the boundary settled close to his legs. Riptide approached and stopped outside it.
He increased the supply. The pocket spread, carrying the cold and pressure of the drowned sea into the surrounding water. Ren kept adding energy until there was room for Riptide to enter and settle along the bottom. Snap backed in beside it, lowering its claw.
Ren held the stone still while both rested. Outside the boundary, the water remained hot. Maintaining the space took more than it had at home, and he watched the edge while adjusting the flow to keep it steady.
Snap opened its claw and rested it on the bottom. Ren let it stay there while he checked Anvil beside Ward. The repaired shell remained closed beneath Balm, with the water covering still flowing over it.
Ward waited beyond them. There was still no room for the whale in the pocket Ren had made.
He warned Riptide and Snap before withdrawing the supply. The boundary blurred, cold water mixed with hot, and the pocket faded around them. Both moved back toward the others.
"It works here," Ren said. "It takes more energy. If I go down, leave it and keep moving."
He put the stone away. He could give them a place to rest while he was there to maintain it; the withdrawal still had to work without him.
— • —
Ren checked the road toward the arch with Spear before asking anyone to travel it.
He watched the landing places from Ward’s back, then had Riptide follow the water between them. Families could use the rocks, but their Lawfires needed a clear passage alongside. At each narrowing, Spear showed them where a flame could pass without being driven against the stone.
The cold crossing had taught Ren to check both. A safe place for a body meant little if its fire couldn’t reach the next shelter.
Below the arch, he walked the waiting ledge while Ward stayed in the water. There was room for the trial group to rest, and a sheltered stretch beside it for their Lawfires. Ordinary red flames still floated farther out. No pale front had reached this water.
Ren looked back along the road with Spear, checking the last approach before they returned to Tide.
The elder listened while Spear drew the turns on the platform with its spear-butt. Ren could follow the shape now: Tide, the narrowings, the final landing. He pointed toward the arch’s direction, then at the families and the Glassfire with the damaged chest.
Spear spoke again. The elder looked over the people waiting below the steps.
[CONCEPT: TIDE. CARRIES. OWN.]
It called to the haulers. One set down a jar and came closer to inspect Spear’s drawing; another gathered two guards from the lower platform. A Tidefire brought a marker and compared it with the route before pointing out the first turn to them.
Ren waited while they chose the trial group. Families gathered their Cinders, and a hauler helped an older Glassfire down the steps. The elder spoke to each guide before letting them leave.
Lantern spread her silk low over the water. Ren had Knock give the three notes once while the guides watched, then pointed along the road. Spear repeated the explanation, and the nearest guide signaled to the others.
On the next call, they moved.
The guides led in their flames. Families used the landing stones, keeping their Cinders against their chests, while the haulers watched the Lawfires moving beside them. The older Glassfire rode inside Hearth; its flame traveled with the others in the sheltered water.
Ren stayed alongside on Ward. At the first narrowing, he kept the following family back until the hauler signaled that the fires were through. Riptide held the current steady while Hearth passed the rock, then followed without overtaking the group.
They reached the waiting ledge together. Ren watched the families settle above the water while their guides gathered the Lawfires beside them. Hearth lowered its mouth to the stone, and the hauler helped the older Glassfire out.
Ren checked that the guides and carriers were staying, then looked back along the route. These people had walked it now. They knew where to wait for one another and which gaps needed care.
The rest would follow under the elder’s direction. For now, the trial group had shelter below the arch; nobody had been asked to pass through it.
He called Lantern, Knock and Hearth back to the pack. Spear turned toward the inward road, and Ward followed.
— • —
They approached the crossing from the Tide side.
The nearer stretch remained clear, with separate red flames drifting beside the rocks. Ren could see the bend where he’d stepped down to test the landing stone. Beyond it, pale light showed against the far bank.
Spear slowed. Ward stopped short of the gap, and Ren rose beside Keep’s cradle to look.
The fire had spread around the far landing while they were away. It lay low against the rock and reached across the water between the stones.
Pale fire had reached the split stone.
