Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign
Chapter 273: The Door to Six
The floor was cold through his trousers. Beneath the door, a thin strip of grey light reached across the stone.
Ren rested his hands in his lap. Halvern shifted somewhere behind him, his coat brushing softly, then the room went quiet. Ren could feel the wards in the walls, though he didn’t know how they worked. John was on the other side of the closed door.
He let out a slow breath, closed his eyes, and stepped through the door of himself as he did each evening. This time, he stayed.
[PLANET LORD ADVANCEMENT COMMENCING.]
[MANDATORY LAWS: TEN OF TEN MET.]
[WILL-TIER 5: UNSHAKEN.]
[PLANAR ENGINE: ACTIVE.]
[WORLD CORE: THE BOUNDLESS WORLDROOT.]
His awareness spread through the Worldroot and down into the ground. He followed the roots beneath the northern shore, feeling the slope of the beach, the seabed falling away into the pod’s deep water, and the shallower stretch where the small keepers had gathered.
The eastern channel was clear. Keep’s reports reached him through the connection to his world, bringing the pack’s checks from places he could locate beneath the roots. Ward was with the pod. Lantern watched the shallows. Hearth had closed its mouth around its passengers.
Everyone was where he’d left them.
Then the ground began to move.

The roots lengthened together, reaching down and outward through ground that kept forming around them. Ren felt the distance to the northern beach increase. The arch remained upright on its stretch of shore while the ground between it and the Worldroot grew longer.
He’d spent so long crossing his sea that he’d started thinking of it as large.
[REQUIRED EXTENT: THREE FULL CONTINENTS OF EDIUS.]
His world had to reach that size. Ren read the line once, then turned his attention back to the beach.
The waterline was retreating across new sand. Where Ward had rested against the shore, there was now a pale, dry stretch with water running off it in narrow streams. Farther out, the seabed beneath the pod began to descend.
Ren directed the Worldroot’s support under it, easing the change across a wider stretch. There was enough depth for the whales, but he didn’t want a sudden shift dragging the surrounding water through their gathering place. He held the slope gradual while the deeper sea continued opening beyond it.
Ward’s report arrived through Keep: the pod was together, with room to move. Ren waited for the rest of the impression before returning to the roots beneath them. Nothing there needed releasing yet.
At the eastern channel, the banks were drawing apart. Ren supported that passage too, keeping the entrance open as the coast changed around it. Riptide checked the current; the report that followed said the way out was still usable. Saber and Ribbon remained at the entrance.
The bank below the flower field was holding without his help. He checked along it, then returned to the two places that needed him.
Each adjustment took attention. While he worked beneath the channel, he had to maintain his grip on the seabed under the pod. The world kept expanding through the ground around both, and he had to follow those changes without pulling either place out of shape.

An ache in his lower back brought the hall briefly close again. Sweat lay beneath his shirt. He opened his eyes enough to see that the light under the door had brightened, then closed them and steadied his breathing.
"The shallows, Ren."
Kaia’s warning reached him before Keep’s report.
The sheltered bottom was beginning to tilt toward the sea. Ren felt the resting places descend and the water deepen over them; the current along the coast was turning outward, toward the water beyond the shelf.
He caught the stretch before it fell farther, directing roots beneath the shifting ground. Now he was supporting three places. His hands pressed against his knees in the hall, and he loosened them without letting go of the shore.
The residents couldn’t stay there. He could hold the bottom for now, but the water around it was still changing.
His first impulse was to reach for them. On the coast he could have gone into the water, lifted a small keeper, or helped it into Hearth. Here his fingers only found the cloth over his knees. Ward would have to judge who needed carrying. Ren kept the ground beneath them steady and waited for the pack to use it.
Riptide was already checking farther along the coast. Through Keep came the direction of a new shallow shelf, followed by the impression of gentler water. Ren found it beneath the roots. Sand was gathering over a broad rise where the seabed had been lower that morning.
He began supporting it while keeping the old shallows in place. Four stretches now, with the new one still settling under his grip. His next breath caught halfway in. He let it out slowly and waited until the shelf held before sending that back through the link.
He didn’t send another order while the answer travelled. Ward and Riptide could judge the water in front of them; another instruction arriving late would only make them wait longer.
Knock’s three notes came through the pack’s reports. They were moving.
Lantern led the small keepers along the coast, with Hearth following in the shallow water, its passengers still inside. Ward stayed outside their route, leaving them room while watching for anything carried toward the deep.
Ren followed their progress through Keep. Beneath them, he could feel the changing slope; which residents had crossed it, and which were still coming, he had to wait to learn.
One report brought a straggler caught in the outward current. Ren tightened his hold on the old stretch, but the next impression was already following: Bolt had turned back, and Riptide was bringing the small keeper into calmer water. By the time Ren received it, the rescue was underway.
He kept both ends of the route steady. The distance between them was growing, and the crossing took longer than it would have before the advancement began.
The first arrivals reached the shelf. Ren held the old shallows through the reports that followed, waiting while Ward checked the remaining group. Hearth settled at the new gathering place. The straggler was there too.
Then Keep brought the confirmation that the old stretch was empty.
Ren released it. The bottom resumed its descent, sand streaming down the slope beneath the water. He kept his attention on the new shelf until the pull along its edge eased.
— • —
He was supporting three places again.
The pod still had deep water and room around it. The small keepers were settling on the new shelf, with Lantern beside them and Hearth opening its mouth. The channel remained clear.
Ren checked each in turn while maintaining the others. Whenever the ground shifted beyond one of them, he adjusted the support beneath it. He couldn’t leave a place unchanged and assume the surrounding water would do the same.
Keep’s reports arrived between those adjustments. Ward went back to the pod, leaving Lantern with the smaller residents. Nobody was missing. Ren waited for the report from Saber and Ribbon before checking the channel again; the current had changed, but they could still keep the entrance clear.
His body needed another breath. He took it, feeling his ribs lift beneath his damp shirt, and eased his shoulders down. There was no pain in the roots he held, only the steady demand of keeping track of them. The ache belonged to the boy sitting on the stone floor.
He let the hall stay close for a moment. Halvern moved once behind him. The door remained shut, the strip of daylight bright beneath it. Ren wiped his brow with the back of his hand, returned it to his lap, and followed the roots outward again.
The beach was farther away than when he’d last checked its distance. The gathering places had spread apart with the growing coast, and new seabed lay between stretches he remembered touching together beneath the roots.
He could feel the Worldroot extending into it. Beyond the places he was supporting, the ground rose and fell freely, drawing water into hollows and exposing bare ridges. He kept returning to the occupied coast whenever a change there demanded him.
[REQUIRED EXPANSION: COMPLETE.]
Ren read it twice.
The minimum was reached. He tried to follow the extent of the ground beneath the roots, but another shift at the channel drew him back before he could take it all in.
He steadied the entrance and waited for the water to settle. The work hadn’t eased. His body was still in the hall, his back aching, while the roots continued lengthening beneath the places he held.
"It’s still growing, Ren."
He felt the movement beyond the coast and followed it outward, keeping his grip on the occupied ground.
Beyond the emptied shallows, another ridge broke the surface.
