Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign
Chapter 266: The Fire That Moves
By the time Ren was ready to leave, the Glassfire had moved the wounded onto the platforms nearest the Hearth. Two smiths watched the water from the outer stonework, and others were searching the damaged shelters.
One guide came down to Spear’s raft. The other stayed with the injured.
Ren held up the marker and tapped the deep notch. The guide checked it, pointed along the water and slipped beneath the surface. Ward followed with Keep, while the rest of the pack spread out around the raft.
Ren shifted his weight carefully as they left. His legs still ached, but they held without shaking. Behind them, the Glass Hearth’s pale flame bent above the platforms.

The guide led them between scattered islands until two black shores narrowed around a channel. It stopped before the entrance and raised a hand toward Ren.
Four indigo-white flames floated along the passage.
The first lay beside a spur at the mouth. Farther in, a low rock broke the surface beside the second. The third burned below the near end of a long ledge along the northern shore, where a worn step reached down to the water. The fourth floated beside the ledge’s far tip, just before the channel opened into the sea.
Travelers sat on the ledge with stone jars gathered around them. Steamfire haulers occupied the middle; nearer the step, two adult Tidefire held a pair of Cinders between them. The rock behind them rose too steeply to climb.
One hauler had wrapped both arms around a jar. Another kept looking toward the channel’s mouth, but neither approached the step. Ren counted the flames again while Spear held the raft outside the entrance. There was room to pass between them, provided the thing on the rock allowed it.
Something stood on the spur beside the first flame.
Its chest was a barrel-sized piece of glassy stone, lit indigo-white from within. Arms, shoulder plates and a head hung separately around it. When the torso turned toward the raft, the other pieces moved with it, maintaining the gaps between them.

Ren looked past it toward the travelers. To reach them, he would have to pass the first two flames and approach the third.
While he watched, a Devourfire came down the water behind them. Its body was patched with basalt and ash, with a cracked glass plate across its chest. It carried a stone jar against its side.
Ren watched it pass. He couldn’t pick it out from the raiders at the Glass Hearth, though it had come from that direction. The Glassfire guide drew closer to the raft as it went by.
The raider stopped beside the spur and set its jar on the rock. The Riftfire took it, and the Devourfire continued up the channel without being challenged.
On the ledge, the Tidefire family rose. The adults collected their jars and Cinders, then approached the step. One started down toward the water.
The Riftfire sank into the first flame, chest first, followed by its head and arms.
The third flame brightened beneath the ledge. Its torso emerged in front of the family, with the arms arriving a moment later and spreading across their path. The adults retreated onto the stone, drawing the Cinders behind them.
Ren kept watching as the pieces dropped back into the flame. A moment later, the Riftfire stood beside the jar at the channel’s mouth again.
All four flames belonged to it. He looked from the empty step to the fire beside the spur, fixing their positions in his head.
— • —
Ren pointed toward the spur, and Spear brought him alongside it.
He held up the marker with his thumb against the deep notch, then indicated the families, their jars and the open water beyond the channel.
The Riftfire’s chest tilted toward him.
[CONCEPT: PAY.]
[CONCEPT: FIRE. GIVE.]
It pointed at the jars on the ledge. Ren lowered the marker and beckoned Spear onward. The Riftfire watched them pass the middle rock, but stayed beside the first flame.
Ward came up below the step as Ren climbed onto the ledge. The nearer Tidefire drew a jar closer to its feet. Ren stopped, keeping his hands away from it, and pointed to the lid.
The adult hesitated, then opened it enough for him to see a dark-blue coal inside. It was no larger than an egg, with a little light remaining at its center.
[CONCEPT: OURS.]
[CONCEPT: DEAD. KEEP.]
Its other arm tightened around the Cinder. It spoke again while replacing the lid.
[CONCEPT: HEARTH. GONE.]
Ren looked along the other jars. They had brought the Embers of their dead away from a failed Hearth, and the Riftfire was demanding them before it would let the families leave.
He turned toward Ward and beckoned the Tidefire down the step.
The third flame brightened. The Riftfire rose between them and the whale, its torso arriving before the arms. One hand reached toward the jar, and Ren moved in front of the adult carrying it.
The other arm swung at him.
Ren caught the blow on cold water and brought Heavenpiercer out along his forearm. He cut toward the chest, but the torso was already dropping into the flame. His edge passed through indigo light as the arms followed it down.
The second flame brightened beside the middle rock. The Riftfire emerged there and turned toward the ledge.
Ren stopped at the step. By the time he could reach that rock, it would be somewhere else.
"Riptide. The flame at the mouth. See if you can carry it out."
A current gathered around the first flame. It leaned, shifted away from the spur, then began moving steadily toward the open water. Ren followed it until it had passed beyond the island’s shoulder, still burning.
The Riftfire’s head turned after it. Ren watched for the flame to pull free of the current or return to its old position, but it kept drifting. Riptide stayed near the mouth to maintain the flow while the raider’s jar remained on the empty spur.
"Anvil, take the middle rock. Ward, stay here. Lantern, cover them."
Ward pressed close to the step. Lantern spread silk above him, catching the drifting smoke until the way down was obscured. Spear climbed onto the lower stone and began guiding the travelers through it.
A Tidefire passed its jar down first, then lowered a Cinder into the waiting arms below. The other child clung to its parent’s side. Ren stayed above them, watching the indigo light beneath the smoke; Ward could shelter their descent, but the flame was still there.
The Riftfire sank into the second flame.
Ren raised his blade as the third brightened below him. Its torso rose beside the step, but Ward’s bulk filled the approach to the families. It reached over him, searching through the smoke, and Ren cut at the arriving arm.
The pieces withdrew. Out in the channel, the second flame brightened again, just as Anvil hauled itself onto the rock beside it.
The Riftfire’s chest met shell. An arm swung down and struck Anvil along the edge, leaving a scorched crack. The crab braced against the stone and pushed forward, forcing the torso back toward the fire.
Ren glanced along the ledge. Several Steamfire still waited near its far end with their jars. The fourth flame floated beside them, beyond Ward’s protection.
"Keep them moving," he told Spear.
He ran past the waiting haulers and took his place at the tip of the ledge, drawing the edge back where the rock hid most of his arm. Behind him, jars scraped as the travelers gathered their things and hurried toward Ward.
The Riftfire remained pressed against Anvil’s shell for another moment. Its head turned toward the sound, and Ren lowered his stance.
The first flame was still available, out beyond the channel. Instead, the torso dropped into the second, and the fourth brightened beside the departing haulers.
Ren watched the center of it.
The chest rose, turning toward the jars. He drove Heavenpiercer through the glassy stone before the arms could come around to guard it. Cold water followed the edge into the split, and the coal inside went dark.
The chest struck the ledge at his feet. Its arms fell into the water before they could land a blow.
— • —
Ren pulled the blade free and went back to the step.
The smoke was thinning. The last Steamfire lowered its jar onto Ward before climbing down beside it, and Spear moved along the group, checking each traveler. Both Cinders were with their parents.
Ren waited until everyone had cleared the ledge, then had Spear take him to Anvil’s rock.
The crack ran about a hand’s length along the shell edge. He rested his palm beside it while Anvil moved the leg beneath, turned and settled its weight again. Nothing buckled, though the blackened seam stayed open.
"We’ll have Balm look at that."
He waited for Anvil to climb down, then returned to the broken torso. An indigo-white coal lay among the glass. Ren wrapped it in cold water and lifted it clear.
[LAW EMBER ACQUIRED: RIFTFIRE.]
[CONTAINS: FIRE / SPACE.]
[ENDLESS GRAFT COMPATIBLE.]
[GRAFTING UNAVAILABLE WITHIN FRAGMENT.]
He stored it beside the three Devourfire Embers. When he stepped back onto Spear’s raft, Ward was already carrying the families toward the channel’s mouth.
— • —
One Steamfire hauler caught Spear’s attention before they left.
It sat on Ward with its jar between its feet and a bright glass bead in its hand. Spear bent close to examine it, and Ren saw fine cuts covering its surface, much smaller and more closely spaced than the notches on his marker.
Spear pointed beyond the far end of the channel.
[CONCEPT: FAST. CARRIES.]
[CONCEPT: MADE.]
Ren leaned closer, but left the bead where it was. He pointed at himself, then at the bead and along the route Spear had indicated.
The hauler opened its hand so he could see the cuts once more. Spear repeated the direction, and the two exchanged a few sounds before turning back to him.
The hauler watched his gestures before closing its hand and bringing it to its chest.
[CONCEPT: MESSAGE. CARRY.]
Spear touched Ren’s sleeve and pointed back toward the Glass Hearth, then farther along the return route.
[CONCEPT: TIDE. MEET.]
Ren nodded. The hauler handed its jar to another traveler, who settled it beside their own. Then it slipped off Ward and headed through the open channel with the bead held close.
Ren watched until it rounded the island. Spear brought the raft alongside Ward, and the Glassfire guide led the rest of them back.
— • —
They stopped at the Glass Hearth long enough for the guide to rejoin its people, then continued toward Tide. Ward carried those who tired, and Spear kept the raft close to the families as they crossed the open stretches.
When the great blue Hearthfire appeared around the island, Tidefire came down from the platforms to meet them. The travelers carried their jars ashore while their children stayed close beneath the adults’ arms.
Ren left the pack there to rest, with Anvil near the recovering guard. Balm was still attached to its patient; checking the shell could wait until the guard’s care was settled. Spear took Ren back to the shelf, and he crossed the arch alone.
— • —
The air beneath the Worldroot felt cool after the Burning Sea.
Ren set out the four Embers and began with the Devourfire. Death opened the graft sites in thin grey cuts; Life sealed the wood around each coal as it entered the root.
The two smaller sources held the same feeding relationship he had learned from the earlier raiders. He waited for each join to settle before lifting the Furnace Ember.
That one went deeper. He felt how the feeding adjusted as another flame resisted it, taking in fire without letting the intake flare or falter. On the platform, the leader had kept drawing while Ren’s knees shook and the captive struggled. Now he could follow the control beneath that steady pull.
[COMPULSIVE HUNGER: NO TRANSFER DETECTED.]
The Riftfire Ember came next. Its burning added no new depth to Fire, but the separated body and connected Lawfires carried Space understanding he had lacked. Ren kept his palm against the bark as the coal sank into it, remembering the chest arriving while the arms were still elsewhere.
"Leave your hand there a moment, Ren," Kaia said.
He waited. The cut closed beneath his palm, and the root warmed as the join settled.
[FIRE: 6.80%.]
[SPACE: 1.05%.]
The relic rack began to hum. Ren took it out and checked the sealed pieces, then put it away when none opened.
— • —
Spear was waiting below the shelf when Ren returned through the arch. It pointed toward Tide, went under the water and raised the raft beneath his boots.
The freed travelers were on the second platform, near the guard sorting stones. The Steamfire hauler had returned too. Its jar stood beside it again, and it was looking out across the sea with the bead in its hand.
Ren followed its gaze as the raft reached the platform.
A small, bright flame crossed a stretch of black water in a sudden burst, then stopped. He could see its reflection trembling beneath it. Before the ripples had settled, it moved again, covering the next stretch just as abruptly.
The hauler raised the bead. Ren climbed onto the stone beside it and watched the flame pause a short distance from the Hearth.
Its next burst brought it to the platform’s edge.
[HEARTFLAME: QUICKFIRE.]
