Chapter 93: 93-Displinary hearing

Maisa who had drifted off didnt hear her. She slept but rest never came. The moment her consciousness slipped beneath the surface, the nightmares began.

She was running through the Dark Forest again. The trees stretched endlessly around her and she called for help but no one answered.

The one chasing her was moving fast and with a murderous aura around her. The purser had no face and that’s what drove Maisa to run even faster.

Just as the attacker was about to catch her, the scene chance and she now stood in the student council room.

Lumi, Zolani and Addessa were there. Their faces were familiar, but their eyes were cold.

Maisa tried to speak but she found no words to express herself. The next moment, all three attacked her, tearing her apart in the name of avenging their loved ones.

Again and again, she dreamt of the three of them killing her in different and painful ways. Every time, she was surrounded by the three girls she had begun to care about and they made her existance a living nightmare.

Every time, she reached for Varitreya for help and every time, the princess stood helplessly on the other side of an invisible barrier.

Unable to reach her, or protect her and for some reason, Maisa had a feeling that she wasn’t even trying to save her.

Maisa woke with a gasp. The room was dark because all the curtains ha been tapped shut to stop sunlight from coming in.

Her heart was pounding rapidly. The flower-shaped mark over her heart glowed faintly beneath her sleepwear. It dimmed and then brightened and dimmed again because of her restlessness.

Across Old Scaris, the bond stirred uncontrollably. Varitreya woke abruptly, unable to sleep with yhe uncomfortable surge of different emotions evert minute.

She sat upright in her bed, breathing slowly as she pressed a hand against her chest. The sensation wasn’t pain exactly. It was distress, Maisa’s distress and it was suffocating.

Kayden stirred in the adjoining room when he heard and felt her yank awake. "Varitreya?" He whispered, knowing that even with the walls separating them, he can hear her.

"I’m fine," Varitreya assured him. "Go back to sleep."

She wasn’t and neither were the others. Lumi woke from another nightmare with tears on her cheeks. Zolani spent hours tossing beneath her blankets, waking every time the strange ache in her chest intensified. Addessa eventually stopped fighting the exhaustion altogether.

The bond had become unbearable. Eventually, all four were forced to do the same thing. They activated their unfeeling hearts and all their emotions fell silent.

The bond became distant like a tattoo on their bodies that had no other functions. Only then could they sleep.

Maisa had no idea about the trouble her distress was causing. She simply composed herself and went back to sleep.

When morning finally arrived, the hotel garden was already filling with students.

Professor Primrose stood at the front with Professor Suzyanne beside her. Their expressions were unusually stern. The princess came to them very early and demanded they call a meeting. Her tone suggested trouble but since she exceeded them in rank, they couldn’t ask what it was about and simply obeyed.

Varitreya stood near them with Kayden was beside her, they were in formal white school uniforms.

Addessa, Lumi and Zolani stood slightly behind, they had no idea what the meeting was about, Varitreya hadn’t told them anything. They simply limed up out of habit of always assembling at her side when she calls for an important meeting.

The atmosphere was wrong. The students knew it immediately that something was wrong. Whispers traveled through the gathering, they tried to guess what was wrong and who was going to be on rhe receiving end of the princess’s wrath.

"What’s happening?"

"Is someone getting expelled?"

"Is there another attack?"

"Why are the professors so serious?"

"Did someone piss off the princess or the student council?"

Maisa arrived with Sapphire and immediately felt the tension. She glanced toward Varitreya, feeling her gaze, the princess’s eyes found hers.

For one brief moment, something passed between them and then Varitreya looked away.

Maisa took her seat and Sapphire leaned toward her. "I don’t like this," she whispered.

"Neither do I."

Professor Primrose raised her hand. The garden fell silent and the students fell in line.

"Everyone is present?" She asked in an authoritative voice.

Professor Suzyanne nodded.

"Good!" Primrose’s gaze swept across the students. Varitreya passed her a note she was to read from while addressing the students. "Last night, one of your fellow students was deliberately led into a location that could have resulted in her death and that is the reason we are here today," she was more surprised with the information than the students were when she read it.

She had led the routes and aside from Varitreya, Kayden and Addessa, the only student who had been missing was Maisa. Her heart filled with dread at the thought of Maisa. The redblood had drawn alot of attention since her arrival, now more drama was arising.

The murmuring immediately returned. Maisa’s stomach tightened, she hadn’t expected Varitreya to handle the matter so quickly.

Varitreya stepped forward. "This is not a discussion," she said, the students immediately shut up. The garden became silent again. "This is a disciplinary proceeding."

Her gaze moved across the crowd. "Kriza," she called. The blackblood’s face went pale.

"Sophia," she named the next culprit. Sophia froze and wanted to die on spot.

Varitreya’s eyes landed on Jane, her white eyes were extremely cold. "Jane."

Jane’s expression collapsed. She swallowed hard and immediately looked towards Zolani.

All three slowly stepped forward. Students began whispering about what they did and why princess was so pissed off.

Maisa stared without any remorse. They held none for her earlier.

Varitreya’s voice remained calm. "You three are accused of deliberately deceiving a newly turned vampire and leading her across the boundary of the Forbidden Dark Forest."

A collective gasp swept through the garden. Kriza immediately shook her head. "Princess, we didn’t..."

"Silence!" Varitreya uttered one word and it sounded like a sentence.

Kriza’s mouth snapped shut.

Varitreya’s eyes hardened. "You knew what lay beyond that border. You knew that a newly turned vampire had not received the proper orientation concerning the prison," she said clearly. "And despite knowing this, you convinced her to cross into it."

Sophia’s eyes filled with panic. "It was supposed to be a joke."

Maisa’s stomach dropped. "A joke?"

Varitreya’s voice became frighteningly quiet. "You call sending someone into the Dark Forest a joke?"

Sophia immediately lowered her head. Jane stepped forward. "We didn’t think she’d actually cross."

"That is precisely the problem," Professor Primrose’s voice cut through the garden. "You didn’t think at all."

She turned toward the entire student body. "The Dark Forest is not a playground. It is not somewhere students dare one another to enter. It is a prison designed to contain vampires who have committed crimes against the nation."

Her gaze settled on Kriza, Sophia and Jane. "And you deliberately brought a new student to it’s border. What were you thinking?"
