Chapter 73-More enemies than friends
Chapter 73: 73-More enemies than friends
"Sure, I’ll walk with you," Maisa agreed.
Lumi smiled. She felt relieved, for a moment there she thought that Maisa would turn her down. "Good."
Maisa fell into the step between Lumi and Luan. For the first few minutes, they walked without speaking, and it was surprisingly peaceful. Then Maisa’s stomach twisted and let out a crying sound.
She stopped, looked around in embarrassment, and clutched her stomach. With the heat gone from her body, she was so hungry that she could drain an entire body of blood.
Lumi immediately glanced at her. "What’s wrong?"
Maisa swallowed. She bit her lip before bracing herself and admitting it. "I’m hungry."
Luan looked over his shoulder. "You look like you’re about to collapse. Didn’t you fee’s, the professor made everyone feed before we left the hotel."
"Clearly, I didn’t. I’m fine. I just..." Maisa pressed a hand against her stomach. She had been too occupied with her strange vomiting and burning through things to think about drinking blood. "I haven’t eaten properly."
Lumi’s expression softened. "Wait, i think i carried some spare blood," she said and opened her bag.
After searching through it for a moment, she pulled out a sealed blood pouch."It’s mixedblood. Type B positive. Are you good with that?" She asked in advance since vampires had different tastes in the blood they drunk.
Maisa stared. She had never heard of such a blood. She didn’t even know that bloods had a type in vampire world too. She just assumed all blood was the same, but apparently not.
Zolani hadn’t specified the bloods she’d brought her, and she hadn’t personally visited the blood archives, so she had no clue.
"You carry blood around?" She asked. As a redblood, she wasn’t allowed a bloodbath outside the archive, so she found the difference in treatment quiet shocking.
"I have a long trip ahead of me...and it’s not just me. Most vampires carry blood with them in case they get hungry. It’s common, she said, and held it toward Maisa.
’It’s not common to redbloods,’ Maisa thought. She wished the princess and Addessa had taken her voice seriously at the but because the difference in treatment was so obvious thar it hurt.
Without a connection to Zolani and Lumi, she would have already starved to death. Other redbloods don’t have such a special relationship with powerful bloods, so they can only make due to feeding at feeding time and enduring at other times.
"Drink," Lumi coerced.
Maisa hesitated to take it. There were students everywhere, and they were stealing glances at her and Lumi. Some hid it well while others stared openly.
"I can’t," she pushed the bag back in Lumi’s hands.
Luan glanced around. Realizing the reason that Maisa was busy rejecting the blood. "You can. Just don’t make a spectacle of it."
Maisa looked at the pouch. She could already feel the hunger clawing at her. The strange fire that had consumed Addessa’s magic was gone now, but a deathly hunger had taken its place.
A deep, aching hunger had settled beneath her ribs, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
"I don’t want everyone staring, and I don’t want to make any more enemies than I already have."
"They already stare," Luan muttered. "As for enemies, other than the few friends you have... everyone else practically hates your existence," he pointed out the obvious.
Maisa sighed. Luan wasn’t wrong. She had more enemies than friends. If asked to line up, her enemies would be uncountable, and d could fill acres and acres of land.
"They already hate me anyway," she uttered. She accepted the pouch."Thank you, Lumi."
"Be discreet," Luan warned. "There are redbloods here who can’t access donated blood as easily as the upper bloodlines. And some mixedbloods may take offence to seeing you drink what they donated."
Maisa immediately nodded, and she understood. Being given something privileged was one thing while displaying it in front of people who had less was another. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a single secluded corner in sight.
Lumi glanced around and also made the same realization, and since they were moving, Maisa couldn’t fall back to feed. Professor Primrose would most certainly not have that.
She raised one hand. A gentle current of air curled around Maisa, and the world seemed to blur.
Maisa blinked in amazement. She looked down at herself. She was still there, but when a passing student looked directly toward her, their gaze slid away as though there was nothing worth noticing.
Lumi lowered her hand. "Air magic. It has its perks when you need it," she smiled. "Now no one can see you. Drink up."
Maisa’s eyes widened. "You made me invisible?" She exclaimed, her lungs heaving as she felt overwhelmed with the sudden introduction of magic. Then she remembered that redbloods don’t get magic and her mood dropped.
"Not exactly. I’ve bent the light and air around you, enough to make you difficult to perceive through naked eyes," she explained.
Luan glanced at his sister. "Showing off, little sis?"
Lumi ignored him. "Drink, Maisa. No one can see you, so it shouldn’t raise an issue."
Maisa didn’t need to be told twice. She opened the pouch and drank greedily. The first swallow immediately eased the ache in her stomach.
The blood wasn’t as satisfying as the blood she had received directly from Varitreya’s vein, but it was enough to quiet the worst of the hunger.
She drank slowly, carefully, trying not to make a mess. It quenched her hunger and eased her dry throat.
Lumi watched her without judgment. She was still deciding where she fit in Maisa’s world. From the heated feeling earlier and the bright glow of the dark red and white petals in the flower mark, she had a feeling that Maisa and Varitreya had gotten closer.
She and Addessa weren’t getting along while she and Zolani seemed to have hit it off as best friends. And then there was her. She had no clue what her place next to Maisa was.
What role would she play? A protector or a companion? Would they go straight to being lovers? But then again, that wasn’t how love worked, even with bonded mates. Was she supposed to do something to hasten the progress of their bond and leave it to fate? She had no clue.
Luan kept his eyes forward but then noticed Lumi miss a step and helped steady her. "You don’t lose your step even when you walk while reading. What’s going on with you?"
Lumi snapped out of her thoughts and flashed him.a grateful smile. "Thank you."
When Maisa finally lowered the empty pouch, she let out a quiet breath.
"Better?" Lumi asked her.
"Much," Maisa evened, her breathing. She was grateful for Lumi being around and having her back in, else she would be doomed.
She folded the empty pouch and slipped it into her bag. "I’ll throw it away later."
