Chapter 61: 61-A freak (3)
’They are pulling away!’
Another pulse of pain struck her chest. She doubled over slightly, bitting her lip until it bled, the minute she released her lip, it healed. Only for her to bite at it again.
"Maisa?" Sapphire races to hold her, her eyes filled with concern. She was genuinely worried about Maisa at that point.
"I’m fine."
She straightened to show that she was alright and then, her stomach twisted violently. She covered her mouth feeling another wave of nausea hit her.
"I... actually don’t feel hungry," she made up an excuse immediately.
Sapphire frowned. "But you said..."
"I’ll catch up with you. Go on ahead," she directed Sapphire to move ahead without her an she’ll join her later.
"Where are you going?" Sapphire inquired. "Professor Primrose asked us not to wander off. You’ll get into trouble if you are caught.
"Just somewhere quiet," she let out. "Don’t worry. I will make sure than I am not caught by the professor."
Before Sapphire could question her further, Maisa turned and hurried down another corridor. She needed to get away to understand what was happening before anyone saw her.
Unfortunately, she didn’t make it far. "Miss Loven," a sharp and authoritative voice called out and made her stop in her tracks.
Maisa froze, Professor Primrose stood at the end of the corridor. The professor’s arms were folded and face showing displeasure.
"You were instructed to attend the midnight meal, no?"
"I know, professor."
"Then why are you walking away from it?" She stepped closer. Her eyes burning through Maisa’s appearance to spot anything thar might prove she was upto no good.
"I’m not hungry."
Primrose’s expression hardened. "All students are required to attend. We depart for the first route through Old Scaris in thirty minutes. You will need the strength."
Maisa lowered her head. "Yes, Professor."
"Good. Turn around," she ordered and waited to see her fulfill the order.
Maisa reluctantly obeyed. She followed Primrose back toward the dining hall. Her hands were burning again and she got scared thar she might burn through something and be discovered.
She slipped into an empty side room and found a pair of old leather gloves sitting near the coat rack. She grabbed them and the moment she put them on, smoke curled from the fingertips again and burnt through the fabric.
Maisa stared in horror. The leather blackened veyind recognition, so she tore them off. Her fingers weren’t burning, they were simply hot, far too hot.
She reached for the blood waiting on the dining table. The smell immediately hit her. Usually, hunger would have responded and she’d crave the taste of blood but today was different.
Instead of reaching for blood in sheer hunger, her stomach violently rejected it. Maisa barely reached the nearest basin before she vomited.
Blood came out first, the next second the vimot turned to rough sand before she finally let out soft black soil.
Her entire body convulsed as pain ripped through her chest. She gripped the edge of the basin and tried to breathe.
What is wrong with me? She wondered realizing that she couldn’t stay there any longer and rusk someone finding out her truth. They would realize that she isn’t normal and might end up being ab outcast even among the redbloods.
Maisa stumbled through a back exit and hurried around the hotel until she found a secluded patch behind the building.
There, beneath an ancient stone wall covered in ivy, she collapsed to her knees.
She hugged herself while tears gathered in her eyes. She didn’t understand her body anymore or the bond, much less the strange elements burning through her. She didn’t understand anything.
Then, footsteps approached where she was hiding. Maisa immediately looked up and was surprised to find the one person she never thought she would see there.
Luan stood several feet away. He had apparently been hiding behind the hotel as well, though judging by the annoyed expression on his face, he hadn’t expected company.
"You’re supposed to be at dinner," he said, annoyed that of all the vampires that he could run into, it had to be the one who was bound to his sister and stole the love of his life, Addessa.
Maisa scrambled backward. "Don’t come closer!" She yelled, afraid of accidentally touching him ans harming him.
Luan stopped. His expression changed when he noticed the blood around her mouth. "What happened to you?" He asked.
"Nothing."
"That’s obviously not nothing," he pointed at the mess. "And don’t think this care because I am asking...its just, I don’t want anyone to think that I bullied you."
"Stay away!" Her voice cracked. He was walking closer and she could feel her palms getting hotter and hotter.
Luan raised his hands. "Okay. I won’t come over," he said, her resistance saved him the trouble of being nice to her.
Maisa wiped her mouth. She looked down at mess she was making and sighed. Her throat was now sore from everything that has been passing through it.
Her lashes and lips trembled. "Please don’t tell anyone."
Luan’s expression softened. He realized instantly what was happening to her as he had read it in the true heart book he found.
"I won’t," he gave his word.
"You don’t understand," Maisa sighed again. "They’ll think I’m a freak if they find out."
"I think I understand more than you realize," he spoke up, leaning against tree at his back.
Maisa stared at him. She doubted he had a clye about her life, no one could unless they had been through the same thing.
"I already have everyone calling me an outcast. If people find out this is happening to me..." She swallowed. "They’ll call me a freak."
Luan shook his head. "You’re not a freak."
"You don’t know that," she argued, feeling like a freak herself. It seemed that fate was bent on making her uncomfortable in her own skin. Just when she discovers a way to enjoy her new life, problems pop up and ruins it for her.
"I know enough. Trust me, you’re not supposed freak."
Maisa studied him suspiciously. The vampire heartthrob had gone out of his way to pick on her on her first night at the academy. He had a pretty face but a scheming heart to go with it and one didn’t know they were being played until he game was over.
She doubted such a vampire could be nice and understanding unless upto no good. "Why are you being nice to me?"
He gave a small sigh. "Because Lumi matters to me," he replied, clearing the air so Maisa doesn’t get the wrong idea.
Maisa blinked.
"Varitreya, too but not so much. Addessa, however, she once held a special place in my heart."
Her expression changed. The only way anyone would link her and the three members of the fiery four is if they knew the true connection between them.
"You know?"
"About the bond?" Luan asked. "Yes... yes, I know about it."
