Chapter 42: 42-Trust

"Where are we going?" She asked while looking around for signs of Sapphire coming back.

"My room," Lumi answered, her tone was light and her response simple.

Maisa hesitated. "Your room?"

Lumi nodded. "I thought..." she paused, a tiny smile appeared at the corner of her lips. "I’d like to know my mate better."

She grabbed Maisa’s hand and ran off, they moved so fast that the redbloods around didn’t see a thing, only felt the wind moving too fast.

Upon arrival, Maisa realized that the blueblood dormitory tower was unlike anything she had imagined on the inside.

It lacked the overwhelming grandeur of the whiteblood tower, whose polished marble floors reflected light like mirrors.

Instead, everything here felt refined, comfortable and sophisticated. The corridors were lined with deep blue carpets embroidered with silver vines.

Elegant paintings decorated the walls and crystal lamps glowed softly overhead. It was like walking into a blue fairytale dormitory.

When Lumi unlocked her room, Maisa couldn’t stop herself from staring. The room was almost five times the size of hers. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves covered two entire walls and a grand desk sat beside a wide window overlooking moonlit gardens.

Fresh flowers rested in crystal vases and every object inside the room had been carefully arranged. Everything smelled faintly of parchment and lavender.

Maisa smiled. The room was an upgrade to most places she’d been to. It was her first time entering someone else’s bedroom, even at the whiteblood tower, she hadn’t gotten the chance to see Varitreya’s room and a a human, she never visited anyone’s home and never went for sleepovers.

"It’s beautiful," she complimented.

Lumi quietly placed her books on a nearby table. "It’s a second home."

Maisa nodded.

Her voice softened. "Please..." she gestured toward a comfortable chair. "Sit."

Maisa obeyed and only then did she notice someone else in the room, a human. A young man sat comfortably in an elegant reclining chair near the fireplace.

He wore loose white clothing, his expression remained peaceful even as he was being assessed by Maisa and he smiled politely.

Lumi noticed her surprise and explained, "He’s one of the registered volunteers."

Maisa remembered Sapphire’s explanation. Some humans willingly donated blood in exchange for generous payment and lifelong high from being fed on by vampires.

The human bowed slightly. "Lady Ashbourne."

Lumi nodded and then looked toward Maisa. "You hungry?"

Maisa instinctively touched her stomach. She was, embarrassingly so. She hadn’t had a single meal since her time under house arrest when the guards delivered her blood bag.

Lumi approached her quietly. "I’d like you to feed before we discuss the reason why I brought you here," he said.

Maisa looked uncertain. "Are you sure?" She didn’t want to impose.

"I invited you for that reason and it won’t be good to talk while you’re hungry," she smiled gently. "It would be rude to let my guest remain hungry. Don’t let me be rude."

Maisa couldn’t argue with that. She slowly approached the volunteer. The young man calmly tilted his head, exposing his neck as though he had done so many times before.

Her gums tingled immediately as her fangs slid free. Her instincts screamed. Feed!

Lumi stepped behind her and without warning, her gentle fingers gathered Maisa’s brown hair. She carefully lifted it away from her neck so it wouldn’t fall forward.

The simple gesture felt strangely intimate that Maisa froze. "What...?" That burning feeling from dreaming about Varitreya the whole day still lingered close to her skin, she was sensitive.

Lumi spoke quietly. "Relax."

Her fingers remained gentle as she continued to move her fingers. The tips of her fingers touched Maisa’s skin and it provoked the opposite feeling of what she wanted from her.

Maisa couldn’t relax, she grew tense and hot. Feeling a tingly sensation wherever Lumi’s fingers brushed upon her skin.

As a vampire, even a lowly one as a redblood, she felt that sensation burn deeper and more intensely that anything. It was heightened.

"You’ll only hurt him if you’re nervous," Lumi let out innocently, unaware of how much torture her simple and harmless actions were doing to Maisa.

Maisa inhaled slowly. She fought the burning feeling and lowered herself close to the bare neck. Her fangs pierced skin and immediately warm blood flooded her mouth.

"Aah," the nan moaned out. The feeling was just like getting high on drugs or tipsy on alcohol only without harming the body.

It brought him great pleasure. He could barely hold back the happy sounds from escaping.

It was sweeter than the bagged blood, richer, warmer and much more alive. She drank carefully, in small sips. Not too much as to hurt the man and not too little that she wasn’t satisfied. Exactly as Sapphire had taught her.

When she finally pulled away, the tiny wounds sealed almost instantly and the volunteer smiled.

"Thank you," he spoke before she could. Looking slightly dazed.

Maisa bowed deeply. "No..." she smiled shyly. "I should be the one to thank you."

After the volunteer quietly excused himself, silence settled over the room.

Lumi continued standing behind Maisa. Her fingers slowly released the strands of brown hair she’d been holding. They landed on Maisa’s back softly, like tiny feathery kisses on he skin before they settled.

She remained thoughtful as she arranged them nicely before moving away.

She spoke. "I’ve been thinking alot about the bond, you and the others..."

Maisa turned. She wiped the corners of her mouth and savoured the laught drop of blood before it trailed down her throat.

Lumi’s expression had become unusually serious. "Despite everything..." she folded her arms in a defensive form. "The bond that binds us, the kiss that we shared that somehow sealed the bond in place and the strange pull between us..."

She exhaled softly. "I still cannot convince myself to trust you."

Maisa’s heartbeat stumbled.

Lumi continued honestly. "I want to trust you. I truly do because you and I are bound together for life but... every instinct I possess tells me lowering my guard completely for you may cost me dearly."

The room suddenly felt colder. Lumi walked toward the window. The moonlight outlined her graceful figure and made her look even more breathtaking. She didn’t look angry, only afraid.

"I don’t like uncertainties, Maisa, that is one thing you should know about me. I prefer facts," she looked back. "So..." her eyes met Maisa’s. "Before I choose to trust you..."

She asked quietly, "Are you hiding anything from me that you feel I deserve to know?"
