Chapter 485: The Automated Funicular Lounge

The engineered, frictionless paradise of the lagoon had successfully pacified the most demanding women on the planet for the better part of the afternoon. But as the blazing tropical sun began to dip dangerously close to the Pacific horizon, casting long, dramatic shadows of tangerine and bruised purple across the water, a new, daunting logistical reality set in.

The main pavilion was situated at sea level.

The master residential suites—a sprawling, multi-tiered architectural marvel of polished mahogany, sheer curtains, and infinity pools—were carved directly into the lush, emerald canopy of the island’s sheer eastern cliffside.

Standing on the teakwood deck of the lower pavilion, wrapped in a sheer, pearl-colored resort cover-up, Jennifer Aniston tilted her head back. She stared up at the staggering, two-hundred-foot vertical incline separating her from a hot shower and a plush mattress.

"Okay," Jennifer announced, the relaxed, sun-drenched ease instantly vanishing from her voice. "We have a catastrophic geographical bottleneck. Tell me we do not have to hike up that mountain."

Salma Hayek, shivering slightly in her damp coral swimsuit, followed Jennifer’s gaze. Her jaw dropped. "A mountain? That is not a mountain, Jennifer, that is a vertical jungle! I am wearing backless sandals! If I attempt to scale a cliff in this footwear, I will snap an ankle and tumble into the foliage!"

"It is a cardiovascular tragedy," Gillian Anderson agreed, leaning heavily against the wooden railing. She had wisely remained dry on the shaded daybed, but the prospect of elevation was entirely unappealing. "I am on vacation. Vacations are strictly horizontal endeavors. If I am forced to engage my glutes to reach my bedroom, I am sleeping on the beach."

Alex Turner lay perfectly flat on the central, oversized lounging pad of the pavilion, his loose white Tahitian linen shirt billowing gently in the evening breeze. His fathomless, shadowed irises were fixed on the wooden beams above.

"Scaling an incline," Alex lectured smoothly, his deep, resonant baritone cutting through the rising panic, "is the ultimate biological concession. It forces the human body to wage a direct, localized war against the entire mass of the Earth. It demands maximum contraction of the quadriceps, elevates the respiratory rate, and induces profuse sweating. I absolutely refuse to fight the planet simply to reach a higher altitude."

Angelina Jolie crossed her arms, her ivory sarong snapping in the wind. She shot a highly cynical, deeply amused glare at the billionaire.

"We know you aren’t going to walk, Mr. CEO," Angelina sneered elegantly. "The question is, how do you expect to get up there? Are you going to command Vanguard to carry your mattress up the cliff like a pharaoh?"

"While utilizing the security staff as beasts of burden is a historically proven method of transit," Alex reasoned flawlessly, "the uneven terrain of the cliffside would result in a bumpy, high-friction ride. I require a seamless ascent. A jostled spine is an unacceptable compromise."

Before the Harem Council could accuse him of expecting to simply levitate to the penthouse, the sleek bamboo service doors hissed open.

Commander Elias Thorne stepped onto the deck. The Head of Vanguard Security had swapped his tactical linen for a lightweight, dark slate evening blazer, looking entirely impervious to the humidity.

"Sir," Thorne addressed Alex, his military posture immaculate. "The evening transit protocol is fully operational and awaiting your embarkation."

Monica Bellucci, adjusting the wide brim of her woven sun hat, looked at the security chief with aristocratic suspicion. "Transit protocol? Commander, please tell me you did not build an outdoor staircase. Stairs are an aesthetic nightmare in this humidity."

"We did not build stairs, Ms. Bellucci," Thorne replied crisply, tapping his digital telemetry pad. "The CEO previously classified vertical climbing as an evolutionary misstep. Vanguard Engineering installed the Automated Funicular Lounge."

Thorne pressed a final button.

The heavy, slatted mahogany wall at the rear of the pavilion slowly folded outward, revealing a massive, angular glass tube resting on a specialized, heavily reinforced inclined railway track that ran straight up the side of the jungle cliff.

It was a funicular cable car. But the interior was unlike any public transit system on earth.

There were no plastic benches. There were no handrails. There were no safety straps. The entire interior of the soundproof, tinted glass cabin was filled, edge-to-edge, with hyper-dense, temperature-regulated memory foam. It was a massive, slanted bed on wheels.

"The funicular operates on an entirely silent magnetic-levitation rail," Thorne reported, completely deadpan. "It moves at a maximum speed of two miles per hour to ensure zero barometric disruption to the inner ear. The occupants are required to lie down for the duration of the ascent."

Shakira stared into the plush, glass-enclosed tunnel. "You built a flying mattress."

"I optimized the commute, Shakira," Alex murmured, a slow, predatory smirk of pure satisfaction gracing his features. He smoothly rose to his feet and strolled toward the glass cabin. "Walking uphill is a working-class endeavor. Why combat gravity when you can simply lie down and let a magnetic rail drag you to the summit?"

Alex stepped into the funicular, immediately collapsing onto the memory foam. He lay flat on his back, his head resting against the plush, slightly elevated upper wall of the cabin, perfectly angled to look out the massive glass windows.

The women did not need a second invitation.

Abandoning the argument entirely, the Hollywood elite swarmed the glass cabin, utterly desperate to avoid the physical labor of walking. Within seconds, the eight women were piled into the funicular alongside Alex, sinking deeply into the immaculate cushioning.

Thorne sealed the glass doors from the outside. The ambient noise of the crashing waves instantly vanished, replaced by the absolute, unbroken silence of the soundproof cabin. A soft, automated chime echoed from the ceiling, and the funicular began its impossibly smooth, glacial ascent up the cliffside.

"This is absurd," Courteney Cox whispered in sheer awe, pressing her hand against the cool glass as the pavilion below slowly began to shrink. "We are being dragged up a mountain in a terrarium filled with pillows."

"It is glorious," Jennifer sighed, snuggling comfortably against Alex’s left side. "I haven’t felt my calves engage once today. I am losing all muscle tone, and I don’t even care."

As the glass cabin crept higher above the lush canopy, the panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean expanded dramatically. The sun was now kissing the horizon, bleeding brilliant, fiery streaks of crimson, gold, and vibrant orange across the darkening sky. It was a postcard-perfect tropical sunset.

The peaceful transit lasted exactly three minutes before the territorial instincts of the entertainment industry violently re-emerged.

"Move your shoulder," Angelina demanded, nudging Mariah Carey with her elbow. "You are blocking the western exposure. I want to watch the sun hit the water, and your hair is in the way."

"My hair is not in the way, your angle is flawed!" Mariah shot back, refusing to shift an inch from her prime spot near the panoramic glass. "I claimed the sunset quadrant when we boarded! If you wanted a view, you should have walked faster!"

"I am an international sex symbol, Mary, I do not rush!" Angelina sneered, aggressively wedging her hip closer to the glass. "Shift over, or I am going to open the climate control vent directly over your head!"

"Both of you, stop bickering," Monica scolded elegantly from the opposite side, though she was actively attempting to lean over Salma to catch the dying rays of the sun. "You are ruining the aesthetic ambiance of the dusk. It is a stunning visual."

Alex lay perfectly still in the center of the plush, ascending cabin. His dark eyes remained fixed on the ceiling panel, entirely ignoring the spectacular, multi-million-dollar sunset blazing through the windows beside him.

"A sunset," Alex lectured softly, his deep voice slicing through the frantic, competitive scrambling of the women, "is merely the Earth turning its back on a star. It is a daily, entirely predictable geological function."

Shakira paused her attempt to crawl over Jennifer’s legs, looking down at him in utter disbelief. "Are you seriously critiquing the sunset right now? It is beautiful!"

"It is an optical illusion caused by Rayleigh scattering," Alex countered seamlessly, delivering the scientific fact with crushing, unyielding apathy. "The atmosphere is simply filtering the shorter wavelengths of light as the sun’s angle lowers. You are romantically obsessing over scattered radiation and dust particles. Staring at it is a visual cliché that requires unnecessary craning of the neck."

"You are a monster," Gillian chuckled huskily, resting her head comfortably against his ribs, entirely willing to let the other women fight for the view. "You have literally logic-ed yourself out of enjoying the sky."

"I enjoy the sky when it requires nothing from me," Alex murmured, closing his eyes as the silent, magnetic pull of the funicular carried them higher into the jungle. "Enjoy your scattered radiation, ladies. I am focusing entirely on the flawless lack of friction in my lumbar spine."

Surrounded by the vibrant, bickering divas fighting for the optimal viewing angle of a tropical sunset, the Slacker Emperor drifted into perfect, unbothered peace. He had successfully eradicated the physical trauma of elevation, turning a grueling hike into a highly cushioned, heavily debated ride. The island was functioning exactly as intended, and he hadn’t lifted a single finger to reach the summit.
