Chapter 478: Foraging Tariffs of the Velvet Republic

The relentless, blinding parallelogram of unfiltered California sunlight finally crawled up the far wall, slipped past the frosted skylights, and vanished into the fading, dusky violet of the evening.

The localized greenhouse effect evaporated, replaced instantly by the crisp, meticulously regulated sixty-eight-degree chill of the estate’s industrial climate control.

Lying perfectly supine in the geographic center of the sprawling, borderless expanse of storm-grey crushed velvet, Alex Turner let out a slow, immensely satisfied exhale. His pitch-dark irises remained lazily fixed on the ceiling fixtures. He had not shifted his spine. He had not raised a hand to shield his face.

"The celestial threat has been neutralized," Alex announced, his deep baritone rolling effortlessly across the three thousand square feet of uninterrupted upholstery. "Gravity and planetary rotation have submitted to my patience. I have successfully out-stubborned a star."

Jennifer Aniston, whose head was comfortably pillowed against his shoulder, let out a bright, breathless laugh. She pulled the heavy, slate-colored silk quilt a few inches higher to ward off the returning chill.

"You didn’t out-stubborn the sun, Alex," Jennifer giggled, her blue eyes shining with profound amusement. "You literally just lay there and waited for the Earth to turn. That is the exact opposite of a victory. That is just surviving by default."

"Surviving by default is the absolute pinnacle of biological efficiency, Jen," Alex corrected seamlessly. "Why expend caloric energy fighting an opponent that is mathematically guaranteed to leave if you simply wait long enough? Action is a concession to panic. I do not panic."

Before Jennifer could formulate a rebuttal to his weaponized apathy, a deep, resonant, and highly localized rumbling sound echoed through the vast, wall-less room. Because the interior partitions had been completely eradicated, the acoustics of the ground floor amplified the noise, making it sound like a distant tectonic shift.

Shakira, sitting cross-legged near the western boundary, jumped slightly. Her fiery curls bounced as her head snapped toward the eastern edge of the velvet tundra.

"What was that?" Shakira demanded, pointing an accusatory finger. "Are the foundational beams collapsing? Did Vanguard demolish a load-bearing pillar?"

"It was not a structural failure," Monica Bellucci purred from her shaded, perfectly insulated position near the Prime Meridian. The Italian actress shifted elegantly in her pearl-colored satin slip, her dark eyes locking onto a specific target. "It was biological. Salma’s stomach just growled loudly enough to register on the Richter scale."

Salma Hayek flushed a dangerous shade of crimson. She was lying flat on her back near the glass patio doors, having firmly established her own sovereign territory earlier in the afternoon.

"I am a living organism!" Salma shouted defensively across the grey plains, her hands flying into the air. "I require sustenance! We have been lying on this giant sponge for hours, debating astrophysics and geopolitics, and I haven’t consumed a solid carbohydrate since the walls came down!"

"Your metabolism is entirely too loud, Salma," Alex murmured, refusing to turn his head. "A refined digestive tract does not broadcast its emptiness. It simply waits for nourishment with quiet dignity. You are functionally whining with your internal organs."

"I will whine with whatever organ gets me dinner!" Salma shot back, rolling onto her side to glare at the center of the room. "You had Vanguard incinerate the dining table! You demolished the dining room! Where exactly are we supposed to eat in this borderless void? Are we supposed to forage in the velvet like peasants?"

Courteney Cox immediately sat upright, her organizational neuroses flaring to life. She looked around the pristine, seamless expanse of plush fabric with genuine horror.

"She has a point, Alex," Courteney stressed, her voice rising in pitch. "We cannot eat a formal dinner on an upholstered surface! What if a sauce drips? What if a crumb falls? Crumbs create localized friction! A single breadcrumb in this velvet will feel like a boulder when we try to sleep! I refuse to live in an environment compromised by stray pastries!"

"Your paranoia regarding pastries is duly noted, Court," Alex drawled, his voice a flat, uncompromising drone. "However, your adherence to the concept of vertical dining is an evolutionary regression. Sitting in a chair compresses the lower abdomen. It restricts the expansion of the stomach lining. Gravity actively fights the digestive process when you are seated upright. We will dine horizontally, as the ancient emperors did."

Angelina Jolie unspooled her legs, sitting up slightly to look down at him. A wicked, aristocratic sneer touched her lips.

"I am not eating off the floor like a stray animal, Mr. CEO," Angelina stated, crossing her arms. "I require elevation. I require a platter. If you expect me to consume calories on this mattress, it must be delivered directly to my mouth without the indignity of leaning over."

"Elevation requires balancing a tray," Alex lectured softly. "Balancing a tray requires core engagement and constant, microscopic adjustments of the forearms. It is a balancing act of terror. I will not authorize trays. Trays spill. The floor does not spill. The floor is absolute."

As if summoned by the escalating domestic culinary crisis, the heavy teakwood service doors at the far end of the foyer clicked open.

Commander Elias Thorne stood at the threshold. His charcoal suit was immaculate, his posture rigid. He held a massive, flat silver platter, laden with an array of bite-sized, Michelin-grade artisanal delicacies—precisely constructed molecular spheres and delicate, single-bite tartlets that required absolutely no carving, chewing, or utensils.

Thorne looked at the sprawling, borderless ocean of storm-grey crushed velvet. He looked at his highly polished leather shoes.

He stopped exactly one inch before the velvet boundary.

"The evening provisions have arrived, sir," Thorne announced crisply, his voice carrying easily across the open room. He slowly, deliberately lowered the massive silver platter directly onto the hardwood floor of the foyer threshold. He did not step onto the fabric.

"Bring it here, Commander," Gillian Anderson commanded lazily from her position near Alex’s left calf. She was draped beautifully in her emerald dress, entirely unwilling to move.

"I cannot, Ms. Anderson," Thorne replied, his face a mask of military stoicism. "The CEO’s architectural mandate was explicitly clear. I am wearing hard-soled footwear. Stepping onto the velvet would introduce street-level contaminants and abrasive friction to the ecosystem. My perimeter ends at the hardwood."

With a sharp, perfectly executed bow, Thorne turned on his heel and exited the room, the heavy doors clicking shut behind him.

The silver platter of hyper-luxury delicacies sat gleaming on the threshold, forty feet away from the center of the room.

The Harem Council stared at the food.

The food sat there, mocking them.

"Are you kidding me?" Mariah Carey gasped, her eyes wide as she lifted her sleep mask. "He just left it at the border! It’s in another time zone!"

"It is a logistical standoff," Monica purred, her eyes gleaming with predatory amusement. She didn’t move a muscle. "The calories have been delivered. But the transportation of those calories into the capital city requires physical labor. Who is going to break stasis to retrieve the platter?"

"Not me," Jennifer declared instantly, sinking deeper into the silk quilt. "I initiated the thermal strike earlier. I have fulfilled my kinetic quota for the week."

"I am entirely out of the question," Angelina sneered, resting her head back against the cushions. "I am royalty. Royalty does not fetch."

Gillian let out a husky, breathless chuckle. "Well, I already executed a tactical roll to the bathroom an hour ago. My transit privileges are exhausted. I am currently functioning as a stationary landmark."

Alex let out a slow, resonant hum of profound approval. "You are all adapting to the philosophy flawlessly. Foraging is a desperate, working-class chore. If the food is not within arm’s reach, it simply does not exist."

Salma let out a guttural sound of pure, unfiltered frustration. Her stomach growled again, louder this time.

"You are all insane!" Salma yelled, looking at the lazy, unbothered cluster of Hollywood’s elite in the center of the room. "There is a platter of molecular gastronomy sitting forty feet away, and you are all going to starve to death because you are too stubborn to crawl!"

"Starvation is a passive state, Salma," Alex murmured. "Crawling is an active exertion. Passivity always wins."

Shakira, whose hyperactive metabolism was actively rebelling against the enforced inertia, threw her hands in the air. "I can’t take it! I am burning calories just being angry at you people!"

"Then you are the obvious candidate for the retrieval mission, Shakira," Monica smiled warmly, her tone dripping with diplomatic manipulation. "You and Salma are the newest additions to the Velvet Republic. You are currently residing in the outer territories. It is only fitting that the border states handle the imports."

"Are you imposing an immigrant tax on us?!" Salma shrieked, utterly derailed by the sheer, shameless arrogance of the Italian actress.

"I prefer to call it a ’transit tariff,’" Monica corrected smoothly. "You provide the kinetic labor to drag the platter to the Prime Meridian, and in exchange, Alex will permit you to consume your carbohydrates without a lecture on acoustic chewing."

Alex did not open his eyes. "I endorse Monica’s foreign policy. The terms are acceptable."

Salma and Shakira exchanged a look of pure, homicidal exasperation. They looked at the gleaming silver platter in the distance. They looked at their own empty hands. The fierce, undeniable reality of human hunger clashed violently against their pride.

"Fine," Shakira hissed, dropping onto her stomach. "But I am not walking. If I walk, he wins. I am rolling."

"I will help you," Salma grumbled, mirroring her posture. "But I am eating the first tartlet, and if Angelina complains about crumbs, I am throwing one directly at her face."

The entire room watched in absolute, highly entertained silence as the international pop star and the acclaimed actress executed a synchronized, grueling, low-friction tactical roll across forty feet of plush grey upholstery. They moved like soldiers navigating a minefield, their limbs tangling occasionally, emitting hushed curses in Spanish as they slowly closed the distance to the foyer.

"Look at them," Jennifer whispered affectionately, resting her hand on Alex’s chest. "They are literally rolling for their dinner. You have completely broken their dignity."

"Dignity is a heavy burden, Jen," Alex murmured, his breathing slow and steady. "By stripping them of their pride, I have granted them absolute freedom. They are no longer bound by the expectations of society. They are simply two organisms rolling toward sustenance. It is pure, unadulterated biology."

Gillian buried her face in the cushions, her shoulders shaking with silent, breathless laughter as Shakira finally reached the threshold, grabbed the edge of the heavy silver platter, and began the agonizingly slow, completely horizontal journey back to the center of the room.

"We got it," Salma panted, slightly out of breath as she and Shakira finally pushed the platter into the heart of the capital city, right next to Alex’s hip. "We did the labor. Now nobody says a word about my chewing."

"Your contribution to the supply chain is recognized, Salma," Alex stated lazily, finally turning his head just a fraction of an inch to observe the feast. "You may distribute the rations. Place a molecular sphere directly onto my tongue. I refuse to elevate my arm to feed myself."

Angelina rolled her eyes, but a fond, victorious smile broke across her face. She reached out, plucking a delicate, golden-dusted tartlet from the tray, and held it carefully over his mouth.

"Open," Angelina commanded softly. "And if you chew too loudly, I am imposing my own tariff."

Alex simply parted his lips, accepting the flawlessly constructed bite of luxury, perfectly content to be hand-fed by an A-list actress in the center of his wall-less, utterly ridiculous domestic empire. The external world was a distant memory. The velvet republic had survived its first famine, and the Slacker Emperor hadn’t moved an inch.
