Blood on the Canvas, Gold on the Screen
Chapter 127: The Cashmere Directive
Chapter 126: The Cashmere Directive
Microsoft Corporate Headquarters, Redmond, Washington. Wednesday, 3:45 PM PST.
In the mid-1990s, the sprawling, meticulously landscaped campus of Microsoft in the Pacific Northwest was the undisputed, invincible capital of the global technological empire. The executives who walked these halls did not negotiate; they assimilated, conquered, and monopolized.
Inside the sleek, glass-walled corner office of the Senior VP of Strategic Acquisitions, the atmosphere was currently experiencing a catastrophic system failure.
The VP, a razor-sharp corporate operative named Gregory Miller, sat frozen behind his desk. The dial tone from his speakerphone buzzed in the sterile air—a sustained, monotonous frequency of absolute rejection.
Sitting across from him, wearing a remarkably unassuming sweater and a pair of wire-rimmed glasses, was Bill Gates.
In 1996, the founder of Microsoft was the wealthiest private citizen on the planet, a man whose net worth defied comprehension. He had personally authorized the outreach to Tyrant Group LLC, recognizing the seismic shift Alex Turner had caused by bypassing traditional media distribution with the Sanctuary white labels. Gates wanted to secure the exclusive digital streaming rights for the upcoming Windows 98 operating system. It was a forward-thinking, multi-billion-dollar play.
And they had just been hung up on.
"Did his lawyer just disconnect the line?" Gates asked, his voice quiet, carrying a tone of profound, unadulterated bewilderment.
"He did, Bill," Miller swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly as he placed the receiver back onto its cradle. "Richard Vance Jr. explicitly stated that Tyrant Group deals exclusively in physical media and Swiss gold. He... he rejected the partnership."
Gates frowned, leaning back in his chair. "We offered them a ground-floor equity stake in the future of digital infrastructure. It’s an objectively flawless financial proposition. Why would he refuse a conversation?"
Miller hesitated, looking down at his legal pad. The sheer, unapologetic audacity of the Slacker King’s counter-threat felt physically dangerous to repeat in this room.
"Well?" Gates pressed, his analytical mind demanding the data.
"He said that our digital synergy was entirely theoretical," Miller read, his voice cracking slightly. "He stated that our internet bandwidth lacks the capacity for high-fidelity audio, making our offer an imaginary promise designed to boost our stock price. And..."
"And what, Gregory?"
"And he instructed his attorney to tell us that if we ever attempt to contact his law firm again," Miller whispered, bracing for the impact, "he will personally buy a controlling stake in Apple Computer purely out of spite."
The silence in the executive office was absolute.
In 1996, Apple was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, bleeding market share, and desperate for an injection of capital. To Microsoft, they were a dying rival. But if an entity with the liquid, untraceable cash reserves of Tyrant Group LLC suddenly acquired them, pumped a hundred million dollars of fresh, unencumbered capital into their R&D, and weaponized the ’Ghost’ brand to market their computers to the youth demographic...
It wouldn’t just revive Apple. It would create a cultural holy war.
Bill Gates stared at the speakerphone. The billionaire titan of industry felt a sudden, inexplicable chill run down his spine.
"He threatened to resurrect Steve Jobs out of spite," Gates murmured, his terrifyingly brilliant intellect instantly processing the mathematics of the threat. "He doesn’t want our money. He doesn’t want our infrastructure. He just wants to be left alone."
"Bill, we have armies of corporate litigators. We can find a legislative backdoor to force a digital compulsory license. We can squeeze his distribution," Miller offered, desperate to regain their lost leverage.
"No," Gates commanded instantly, raising a hand. "You do not squeeze a man who is willing to buy a dying tech company just to annoy you. He is operating completely outside the parameters of rational capitalism. He’s a biological anomaly. If we push him, he won’t negotiate—he will just set the board on fire."
Gates stood up, adjusting his glasses. The richest man in the world had just recognized the existence of an apex predator who operated on a completely different, infinitely more dangerous frequency.
"Flag the Tyrant Group file as a Class-A Hazard, Gregory," Gates instructed softly. "Do not monitor his assets. Do not ping his servers. We concede the entertainment sector to him entirely. Let Sony and Universal bleed themselves dry fighting the Ghost. Microsoft is officially withdrawing from the battlefield."
Trousdale Estates, Los Angeles. Wednesday, 4:30 PM PST.
The biological suspension inside the mid-century fortress was an architectural masterpiece of uninterrupted lethargy.
The heavy, motorized linen drapes remained pulled back, but the harsh glare of the afternoon sun had softened, painting the sprawling white terrazzo floors in long, golden, geometric strokes. The air was locked at a flawless sixty-eight degrees, smelling faintly of the remaining truffle oil from their extravagant pasta lunch.
The fourteen-by-fourteen-foot linen megalith in the center of the living room was operating at peak, hyperbaric efficiency.
Alex Turner lay perfectly horizontal in the exact center of the plush arena. His dark, obsidian eyes were closed. His breathing was a slow, hypnotic rhythm. The [The Emperor’s Hearth: Level 2 - The Sovereign’s Embrace] passive trait radiated outward in a perfect ten-foot sphere, flooding the down-filled cushions with an invisible wave of cellular repair and psychological decompression.
The Harem Council was actively basking in the miracle.
Jennifer Aniston, Mariah Carey, and Monica Bellucci were draped comfortably around him, occupying their respective corners of the massive, espresso-colored Italian sectional. The suffocating, relentless anxieties of their billion-dollar industries had been chemically, biologically neutralized by the Slacker King’s aura.
Monica shifted lazily, resting her head on a silk pillow. She was wearing one of Alex’s oversized white t-shirts, her dark, raven hair spilling across the fabric. She looked over at Jennifer, who was absentmindedly twirling a strand of blonde hair around her finger, staring contentedly at the ceiling.
"I have spent the last ten years of my life assuming that exhaustion was simply the baseline state of human existence," Monica whispered, her rich Italian accent softened by the heavy, acoustic-dampening properties of the room. "I genuinely did not know it was physically possible to feel this... light."
"It’s the aura," Mariah murmured from the northern quadrant of the pit, her honey-colored eyes half-closed. "The longer you stay inside the perimeter, the more the industry noise just washes out of your blood. It’s like living inside a vault."
In the center of the cushions, a low, resonant rumble vibrated from Alex’s chest.
"A vault implies captivity, Mary," Alex drawled lazily, his deep baritone echoing smoothly across the room. He didn’t open his eyes. "This is a sanctuary. Captivity requires locks on the outside of the doors. Our locks are on the inside."
He stretched his broad, heavily muscled shoulders, a satisfying series of pops echoing in the quiet space. The [Biological Endurance: Level 3 - The Immortal Sloth] trait had fully metabolized his massive lunch, converting the dense carbohydrates directly into raw kinetic energy while he remained entirely stationary.
"However," Alex sighed, slowly pushing himself up into a seated position and resting his forearms on his knees. "I am beginning to recognize a severe logistical flaw in our current domestic arrangement."
Jennifer sat up, instantly slipping back into her role as the apex gatekeeper. "A flaw, Mr. CEO? Is it the security detail? I can have Elias Thorne run another sweep of the perimeter."
"Thorne is executing his duties flawlessly, Jen. The flaw is sartorial," Alex stated, opening his dark eyes and looking around the linen megalith.
He gestured vaguely at the three women.
"You are currently occupying the highest echelons of global entertainment," Alex lectured smoothly. "You possess a combined net worth that rivals small European nations. And yet, the three of you are currently wearing my oversized, heavily washed cotton t-shirts. While I appreciate the brand loyalty to Tyrant Group’s informal uniform, the fabric lacks the structural integrity required for maximum dermal comfort."
Mariah burst into a bright, musical laugh, looking down at the massive black t-shirt she had commandeered that morning. "Alex, your t-shirts are incredibly comfortable. And none of us exactly packed a suitcase before fleeing our respective corporate handlers."
"Comfort is the baseline. We are pursuing absolute, unapologetic luxury," Alex corrected.
He leaned over the edge of the sofa and snatched the heavy Motorola brick phone from the teakwood coffee table. He extended the thick black antenna. He didn’t dial Richard Vance Jr.; he dialed the direct, unlisted number for Julian at Platinum Concierge.
The phone rang exactly once.
"Platinum Concierge, Mr. Turner. How may we optimize your afternoon?" Julian’s crisp, hyper-professional voice answered instantly.
"Julian. The Harem Council requires immediate outfitting," Alex dictated smoothly, his tone dropping into a register of icy, absolute authority. "I require a complete wardrobe of high-end loungewear for three adult women. However, I have strict parameters."
"I am ready for the parameters, sir."
"There is to be absolutely no branding. No logos. No synthetic fibers," Alex commanded. "I want pure, unadulterated Loro Piana cashmere. I want silk pajamas imported from Milan. I want plush, heavy-gauge cotton sweatpants. Source it from the highest-end boutiques on Rodeo Drive, remove all the tags, and have it delivered to the Vanguard checkpoint by 6:00 PM."
Julian didn’t hesitate. "Cashmere, silk, and heavy cotton. Unbranded. For three. It will be executed flawlessly, Mr. Turner. Shall I bill the Tyrant Group operating account?"
"Bill the secondary Cayman holding account. And Julian? Ensure the color palette is strictly muted. Charcoal, cream, and midnight blue. Loud colors are visually exhausting."
"Understood, sir. The delivery will be on time."
Alex hit the end button and tossed the phone back onto the table. He leaned back against the plush cushions, folding his hands over his stomach.
Jennifer, Mariah, and Monica stared at the Slacker King in absolute, stunned silence.
He hadn’t just ordered them clothes. He had mobilized a high-end concierge service to raid Rodeo Drive for tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of unbranded, ultra-luxury cashmere, simply because he felt that standard cotton was a violation of his aesthetic peace.
"You just bought us a wardrobe of Loro Piana cashmere so we wouldn’t have to look at logos," Monica whispered, a slow, incredibly dangerous smile touching her lips.
"Logos are corporate graffiti, Monica," Alex reasoned perfectly. "They demand attention. And as we have firmly established, demanding my attention is a Tier-One offense."
Jennifer crawled across the down-filled cushions, closing the distance between them. She rested her chin on his chest, looking up into his dark, serene eyes. The overwhelming, intoxicating wave of his [Charisma: Level 3] completely stripped away any residual Hollywood modesty.
"You are going to ruin us for the real world, Alex," Jennifer murmured, her blue eyes shining with profound affection. "If a studio ever tries to put me in a polyester wardrobe again, I am going to physically fight them."
"If a studio tries to put you in polyester, Jen, Richard Vance Jr. will sue them for emotional distress, and I will buy the studio cafeteria to turn it into a pigeon coop for Mike Tyson," Alex promised lazily, wrapping a strong arm around her waist.
Before the Council could fully express their gratitude for the incoming cashmere, a soft, discrete chime echoed from the intercom panel mounted near the heavy walnut front door.
Alex let out a low, rumbling groan. "The perimeter is testing my patience today."
Mariah slipped gracefully out of the linen pit, padding barefoot across the white terrazzo floor. She pressed the talk button on the panel.
"Tyrant Group," Mariah answered smoothly.
"Ms. Carey. Apologies for the interruption," Elias Thorne’s voice filtered through the speaker. "The perimeter remains secure. However, we have received a priority delivery via secure diplomatic courier from the offices of Sterling, Hughes & Vance. Richard indicated it requires Mr. Turner’s immediate physical review."
Alex opened one eye. "Richard knows better than to send physical paperwork to this house unless it involves a sovereign wealth transfer. Bring it to the door, Thorne."
A minute later, the heavy front door opened. Thorne stepped inside, holding a sleek, silver, combination-locked briefcase. He set it down gently on the live-edge dining table, bowed crisply, and vanished back into the motor court.
Alex sighed, peeling himself off the sofa. He walked over to the dining table, followed closely by Jennifer and Monica.
He didn’t ask for the combination; Richard had preemptively set all locks to match Alex’s date of transmigration. Alex spun the dials, the brass latches clicking open with a heavy snap.
He lifted the lid.
Inside the velvet-lined briefcase were not legal briefs or royalty checks.
Resting in custom-cut foam were three distinct, highly classified items.
The first was a pristine, white-label vinyl record, identical to the ones currently tearing apart the hip-hop club circuit. But this one had a small, handwritten note affixed to it.
Alex,
The streets are completely locked down. Suge Knight hasn’t left his office in two days. The G-Funk era officially belongs to Tyrant Records. P.S. The birds loved the new premium seed.
- Mike T. & Snoop
Alex smiled, a lazy smirk touching his lips. The Brotherhood was operating efficiently.
He looked at the second item. It was a heavy, embossed envelope bearing the official seal of the Screen Actors Guild.
Alex opened it. It was a formal, legally binding apology letter directed to Tyrant Group LLC, officially censuring Miramax Films for their attempted embargo of The Sovereign, and confirming that Jack Nicholson’s performance was unconditionally eligible for all major award consideration.
Harvey Weinstein’s grave was officially dug.
Finally, Alex looked at the third item in the briefcase.
It was a small, beautifully crafted mahogany box.
Alex popped the brass latch and opened it. Resting on a bed of dark satin was a single, heavy, matte-black titanium keycard. It was completely blank, save for a microscopic, laser-engraved serial number on the back.
A note from Richard Vance Jr. rested beneath it.
Mr. CEO,
The final acquisition protocol for Grizzly’s Old School Boxing Gym is complete. The deed is fully secured under a tertiary shell corporation. Furthermore, as per your directive regarding ’absolute isolation,’ the attached titanium keycard grants you exclusive, twenty-four-hour access to the private, subterranean helipad located beneath the US Bank Tower in downtown Los Angeles. Should you ever require immediate aerial extraction without utilizing commercial airports, the Sikorsky S-76 is fully fueled and awaiting your command.
- RVJ
Jennifer picked up the heavy titanium card, her eyes wide. "A private subterranean helipad? Alex, you have your own personal airspace now."
"Commercial airports require standing in lines, Jen. Lines are the enemy of stasis," Alex reasoned, snapping the silver briefcase shut.
He turned around, looking at the three women, the sprawling mid-century fortress, and the blazing California sun reflecting off the pool. The entertainment industry had tried to break him. The corporate warlords had tried to crush him.
Instead, he had built a kingdom of pure, unadulterated comfort, and forced the entire planet to pay for the upholstery.
"The administrative tasks for the week are officially concluded," Alex declared, his deep voice carrying the absolute, uncompromising weight of the Slacker King. "The cashmere arrives at six. The pizza arrives at seven. Until then, the Harem Council is ordered to return to the linen megalith. Any further discussion of the outside world is strictly prohibited."
The Queens of Hollywood didn’t argue. They smiled, turning their backs on the multi-million-dollar corporate victories resting on the table, and followed their Emperor back into the plush, down-filled void, perfectly content to let the universe burn outside their gates.
