Beneath His Skin
Chapter 200: The Irreversible
Azura’s POV
I could not look away from Amanda.
The woman standing before me in the bright, unforgiving afternoon sun was a cruel ghost of the past, completely stripped of the sweet little girl I used to hold close.
She was older now. Taller. Harder.
The soft, familiar curves of her childhood face had sharpened into rigid lines under the wide-open sky.
Her eyes held absolutely no warmth, no memory, and no recognition.
When she looked across the patch of dry dirt separating us, she didn’t see a sister who had spent agonizing months searching for her.
She didn’t see a mother. She only saw an enemy that needed to be eliminated.
The heavy silence of the outdoor clearing was thick with tension, the high midday sun casting stark, blunt shadows on the grass.
Every rustle of the surrounding leaves felt loud, like a warning we were choosing to ignore.
"What did you just say?" Torin’s voice cut through the warm breeze, sharp, urgent, and laced with disbelief.
I tore my gaze away from Amanda with a violent, wrenching effort, turning my breathless, pale face toward him.
The weight in my chest was suffocating, making it hard to form the words, but I forced them out anyway.
"That is Amanda. Torin, look at her. That is my little Amanda."
Torin’s face drained of color in an instant.
Shock flickered across his rugged features, stiffening his jaw as my words sank in.
He turned his head slowly, his piercing gaze locking onto the young woman standing at the edge of the tree line.
I followed his line of sight, my heart hammering like a trapped bird against my ribs.
I desperately searched her form, praying for a glitch in her stance, a flicker of familiarity in her posture, or any small sign of the innocent child I knew.
And then my eyes traveled down, and I saw the horror raw and bare.
A brilliant blue pearl was embedded directly into the center of her chest, right where her human heart should have been beating.
It didn’t look like an ornament or an exterior object; it was pulsing with a faint, eerie luminescence that throbbed rhythmically in the bright daylight.
Thick, jagged veins of unnatural blue light spread outward from the core like glowing roots, branching aggressively across her pale flesh and disappearing beneath the heavy fabric of her clothes.
The strange energy was woven straight into her skin. It was connected to her entirely, feeding off her vitality.
Remembering what Genevieve had said to me, a cold dread settled deep into my bones.
This was entirely different from the encounters we had survived with Leo and Ethan.
Their pearls had been loose, sitting shallowly beneath the surface like foreign objects that could be carefully pried away with the right tool and enough patience.
This one was entirely fused into her skeletal structure.
It was a part of her anatomy now, wrapped around her very life force.
Separating that pulsing blue pearl from her chest wouldn’t save her.
It would kill her on the spot.
"Do you really think she will still be the same after all these months?" a mocking voice drawled from the shade of the thick brush.
I turned slowly, every muscle in my body stiffening as the imposter stepped forward into the bright sunlight.
A cruel, satisfied smirk played on her lips as she walked into the center of the clearing, her movements slow, deliberate, and entirely predatory.
She didn’t have a weapon drawn, but her posture carried the supreme confidence of someone who knew they held every single card in their hand.
Her eyes were completely devoid of human warmth.
"Do you think that when you finally found her, she would still be that precious, innocent girl who needed her big sister to protect her?" the woman asked, her voice dropping into a soft, taunting purr that made my blood run cold.
She gestured casually toward Amanda, watching the agony unfold on my face with sick, twisted amusement.
"Look closely at her, Azura. Look at the stance. Look at the grip on her weapon. Does that look like an innocent girl to you?"
She paused, letting the heavy rustling of the forest leaves fill the gap between us as her smile widened into something truly sinister.
"No," the woman continued, her tone dropping all pretense of softness and turning ice-cold.
"She is a destroyer. She was created for one purpose and one purpose only: to destroy, to kill, and to burn anything that comes anywhere near her."
"Right now, she does not care about your shared memories. She will not hesitate to separate your head from your neck if you make a single wrong move toward her."
I looked back at Amanda, my eyes burning with unshed tears.
I wanted so badly to scream her name, to run across the dirt and pull her into an embrace, to force her mind to snap back into reality.
But she only glared back at me with a deep, unshakeable hatred that rooted me to the spot.
There was no trace of the child who used to hide behind my skirts when she was frightened.
I turned my head toward the woman standing in the center of the clearing, my jaw tightening as anger began to override my grief.
"What did you do to her?"
The woman burst out laughing, a loud, grating sound that echoed awkwardly in the wide-open air.
She shook her head, wiping a fake tear from the corner of her eye as if I had just told the funniest joke she had ever heard in her life.
"Are you really asking me that right now, after everything we have been through?"
"What did you do to her?" I repeated, my voice rising, shaking with a volatile mix of fury and escalating panic.
I took a half-step forward, ignoring the way Torin tried to subtly block me with his arm.
"Why are you doing this to my family? I do not even know who you are! What do you want from us?"
The woman stopped laughing instantly.
The amusement vanished from her features, leaving her face entirely flat, cold, and rigid.
Her unblinking gaze locked onto mine with a terrifying, singular focus that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
"You."
I frowned, a cold sweat breaking out on my skin despite the midday warmth radiating from the earth.
"Me? Why me? What do I have that anyone like you would want?"
Even as the words left my lips, a hollow, sinking feeling settled deep in my stomach.
Deep down, I already knew the answer.
The recurring, vivid dreams that had plagued my sleep for weeks had dropped enough cryptic hints.
I was the target in this elaborate, twisted game.
They had taken Amanda just to draw me out into the open. But I needed to hear it from her mouth. I wanted to know exactly what they thought they knew about my abilities.
The woman’s slick, patronizing smile returned, turning my stomach.
"Well, I actually will not give you the answer you are craving so badly right now. We don’t have time for a history lesson."
"But the only way to solve this problem, the only way to ensure your sister doesn’t paint this grass with your blood, is for you to surrender yourself to me right now. Willingly."
"Do not even think about it, Azura," Torin snapped, his hand instinctively tightening around the hilt of his weapon, his knuckles turning white.
His eyes never left Amanda, sensing the volatile energy radiating from her.
I raised my hand, keeping my fingers steady as a signal for Torin to hold his ground.
I stepped past his shoulder, closing the distance between myself and the imposter by a few feet, our boots crunching against the dry grass.
"If I surrender myself to you right now... if I walk over there and let you take me... would you fix her? Would you remove that thing and change her back to the way she was?"
The woman glanced over her shoulder at Amanda, then turned her smooth, reassuring expression back to me.
"Yes. It is very easy. I can restore her mind with a single phrase. But you have to cooperate first."
She was lying.
The realization hit me like a physical blow, backed by the heavy, scientific truth Genevieve had shared with me in secret before.
Whatever dark, twisted magic had been done to Amanda’s body was completely irreversible by normal means.
The pearl was part of her life force now.
There was no simple magic trick or spoken phrase that would magically fix her, not today, and maybe not ever.
This woman was simply dangling a fake promise, using my love for my Amanda to get exactly what she wanted without a fight.
My gaze hardened, all the vulnerability leaving my expression as I stood tall in the dirt.
"Do you think I am dumb?"
The woman blinked, completely caught off guard by the sudden, ice-cold shift in my demeanor.
Her fake smile faltered.
"Excuse me?"
"DO YOU THINK I’M DUMB?!" I asked again, my voice ringing out louder this time, filled with absolute disdain and carrying across the entire clearing.
The imposter recovered her composure quickly, tossing her dark hair back over her shoulder with a bitter, ugly sneer.
"Well, since you want to act like one... yes. I think you are incredibly foolish to bargain when you have zero leverage."
"I will be taking Amanda with me when I leave this place," I said, my voice firm, unyielding, and clear as I gestured toward my silent sister.
"And I will also be taking the real Isadora. Not you."
The woman’s brow furrowed tightly, her lips twisting into a sharp, confused scowl as she tried to process my words.
"Why would you..."
"Oh, drop the stupid act," I said, cutting her off entirely before she could spin another useless lie to waste our time.
"You are terrible at pretending to be Isadora. The real woman is far more wicked, far more calculated, and far more imposing than you could ever hope to be in your wildest dreams."
"You’re just a cheap imitation trying to play her part."
The fake Isadora’s face went completely blank.
The playful, mocking amusement vanished from her eyes, replaced by a dark, murderous glare as she realized her cover was entirely blown and her psychological manipulation had failed.
"I am done with this. I am so done with you."
She shifted her cold gaze toward Amanda and gave a silent, sharp nod of her head.
I heard it before I saw it, a familiar, deadly, high-pitched whistle cutting through the bright afternoon air.
I whipped my head around toward the trees just as a dark streak flew from the thick brush.
An arrow was already airborne, tracking a lethal line straight toward my chest, closing the distance far too quickly for my heavy, tired legs to dodge in the open terrain.
Torin moved like pure lightning.
He threw his body directly in front of mine, his arm blurring in a brilliant arc as he swung his dagger upward with immense force.
The heavy metal blade clashed violently against the oncoming projectile, splitting the wooden shaft perfectly down the center in a spray of splinters.
Both pieces thudded harmlessly into the dry dirt right at our boots.
"Stay here," Torin ordered, his back completely rigid, his muscles bunching beneath his armor as he kept his eyes locked on the threat ahead.
"Do not move from this spot. I will get rid of her."
Without waiting for my reply or giving me a chance to hold him back, he lunged forward, his boots kicking up dust as he charged directly across the clearing toward Amanda with his weapon raised high.
"Torin! Don’t hurt her! Please! She doesn’t know what she’s doing!" I screamed, panic clawing violently at my throat as I watched him close the distance between them.
He didn’t answer me, his battlefield focus entirely consuming his senses as Amanda raised her own weapon to meet his strike.
"Torin, stop!"
Before I could take a single step to run after him into the fray, a sudden, blinding shock of intense pain exploded in my abdomen.
Something heavy, fast, and incredibly sharp slammed directly into my stomach, stealing the breath right out of my lungs in a brutal instant and knocking me flat onto my back.
I hit the hard earth with a desperate gasp, my fingers clawing into the loose dirt as I fought through the agonizing, burning sensation radiating through my core.
The force of the blow left me winded, my body pinned down by the sheer weight of the pain pulsing through my muscles.
I couldn’t move or stand, but my eyes stayed wide open, forced to watch from the dirt as the chaos erupted around me in the bright daylight.
