Azura’s POV

I stood frozen beside the vanity table, my eyes completely wide as I stared down at Genevieve.

"Wait a single minute," I breathed out, the shock making my voice sound incredibly hollow in the quiet room.

"Are you seriously trying to tell me that the girl outside is not Isadora?"

Genevieve didn’t answer with words right away.

She simply shook her head from side to side in a slow, incredibly heavy movement, her eyes fixed on her own reflection as if the truth itself was too exhausting to look at directly.

"Then why on earth have you not done a single thing about it?" I asked, my voice rising much louder as a sudden wave of panic hit my chest.

"Why are you just sitting here so calmly? Why are you not actively trying to stop her from walking around our pack grounds?"

Genevieve turned her head slowly, her expression perfectly calm and collected despite the terror bubbling in my stomach.

"Because I believe with all of my heart that she is here to find something very specific," she explained, her voice steady and soothing.

"And for our pack to truly understand what she is hunting for, and exactly who she is working with in the shadows... we need to step back and let her get close to what she wants."

I pulled my brows together into a deep, tight line, my mind spinning into a knot.

"I am not following your logic right now."

Genevieve leaned her torso forward, resting her hands flat on her lap as she held my frantic gaze.

"If she is not the real Isadora, Azura, that means she has been sent here on a highly dangerous mission."

"And to complete that mission, she needs to remain close to the center of this pack. She needs to be close to its leaders."

"She needs to be close to its people, and she needs to be close to all of our deepest secrets."

She stopped speaking for a brief moment, her eyes softening with a look of profound concern that made the hair on my arms stand up.

"And from every single bizarre thing that has been unfolding around us lately," she added in a much softer, more intense whisper, "you are the only individual who has been experiencing these mysterious changes."

"You are seeing things in your mind that normal wolves would be incredibly eager to find out about. You possess secrets that others would willingly kill to possess."

The heavy realization hit my chest like a physical blow, making my breath hitch.

"So... you are trying to say she might be here specifically to get to me?"

Genevieve gave me a slow, definitive nod of her head.

"Yes."

I instantly bolted up from my wooden stool, my legs straight as I took a hasty step back away from her vanity.

My hands were shaking slightly.

"Wait a minute. Are you trying to tell me that you are planning to use me as bait?"

"Are you trying to sacrifice me to this imposter and just hand me over to her on a silver platter?"

Genevieve quickly reached her arm out across the small space, her warm fingers wrapping tightly around my cold hand to anchor me.

"Look at me, Azura," she commanded gently, her eyes full of a fierce, motherly protection.

"You know deep down in your soul that I would never, ever let a single soul bring harm to you. You know that."

She held my gaze firmly, refusing to let me look away from the honesty shining in her eyes.

"But for us to get anywhere near the truth of what is happening behind our backs," she explained, her voice turning hard as iron, "we need to let this pretender think that she is winning her little game."

"We need to let her believe with total certainty that she is successfully getting exactly what she came here to steal."

"Only when she feels entirely safe and victorious will she finally lower her guard and reveal her true identity."

I opened my mouth instantly, a dozen angry arguments rushing to the tip of my tongue as I prepared to fight her dangerous plan.

But before a single syllable could leave my lips, the heavy brass lock on the door turned with a sudden, loud click.

The oak door swung open roughly.

Torin walked straight into the private room.

He didn’t bother to offer a polite greeting. His broad face was completely tight, his features painted with a look of pure, breathless urgency that immediately made the tension in the room double.

He locked his sharp gaze onto us.

"That girl outside is not Isadora," he stated bluntly, his deep voice slicing through the quiet air.

I let out a long, heavy sigh, my shoulders dropping slightly as I rested my hand against my forehead.

"Yeah," I muttered out loud, my tone thoroughly exhausted. "Thanks for the news flash, Torin. We already know that." 𝘧𝓇ℯℴ𝓂

Torin blinked his eyes twice in total surprise, his mouth parting slightly as he stopped in his tracks.

"Wow," he murmured, shaking his head.

"Okay, that was incredibly fast. I thought I was going to have to spend an hour convincing you both."

He quickly stepped all the way into the chamber, using his heel to forcefully push the heavy door shut behind his back until the lock clicked into place.

"That is not even the worst part of what I found out," he whispered, lowering his voice into a dark, secretive frequency as he moved closer to our stools.

"The exact day our traveling party got violently ambushed on the road... she was physically there on the battlefield."

I turned my entire body around to face him fully, my heart starting to race all over again.

"What do you mean by that?" I asked, my brows knitting together in confusion. "Are you talking about the fight before we ever made it to the King’s castle?"

Torin gave a firm, hard nod of his head, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides.

"Yes. She was right there in the middle of the chaos. And she was the exact person who sneaked up behind me and knocked me out cold."

He stopped talking, a look of deep, burning frustration crossing his features as his jaw tightened until the bone showed against his skin.

"And for some reason," he continued, his voice dropping into a quieter, deeply unsettled tone, "my supernatural powers completely failed to work against her body. They just... stopped."

"For my specific abilities to fail that miserably, it can only mean one thing. Whomever that woman is, she already possesses intimate knowledge of exactly what I am."

"She already knows my weaknesses, and she knows exactly how to counter my magic before I even throw it."

He looked back and forth between me and Genevieve, his eyes dark with a growing dread.

"So, there are only two real possibilities here," he said slowly, weighing every single word.

"Either that girl is a stranger who is currently wearing Isadora’s face like a mask... or she really is the true Isadora, and she has been hiding a massive, dark secret from every single one of us for years."

"Something much bigger and more terrifying than we ever imagined."

Genevieve sat perfectly still, her face turning incredibly thoughtful as she processed his words.

"So, let me get this straight, Torin," she said, her voice dripping with a sudden, icy realization.

"Are you telling me you met this entity in the forest... meaning she has been hiding inside Isadora’s body since before Azura and Liona ever went missing from the pack?"

Torin gave another slow, heavy nod.

"Yes. That is exactly what I am saying."

Every single drop of color instantly drained from Genevieve’s face, leaving her skin looking completely pale and ghostly under the candlelight.

"This is incredibly bad," she whispered to herself, her voice barely a breath in the large room.

"If she has truly been operating within our pack walls for this long... that means she has already had ample time to do exactly what she came here to accomplish."

"She has already planted whatever dark seeds she wanted to plant in our home. She has already completed her primary mission."

She lifted her head, her wise eyes full of a sudden, sharp panic as she looked at both of us.

"It means we are already far too late," she murmured urgently.

A cold wave of pure panic rushed straight up into my throat, making it hard to swallow.

"So what on earth are we supposed to do now?" I demanded, my hands tightening into fists.

"We cannot just sit here and let a monster walk under our roof!"

Genevieve let out a long, ragged exhale, her fingers trembling slightly as she touched her robe.

"To be completely honest with you, Azura... I do not have a single answer right now."

She stopped, closing her eyes for a brief second to gather her composure before she spoke again in a calmer, more calculated tone.

"But we need to be extraordinarily careful with every step we take from this moment on," she warned us, her voice steadying.

"Right now, this imposter holds the upper hand. Her being embedded in our daily lives for so many weeks has given her all the time in the world to do things behind closed doors that we know nothing about."

"Hidden things that might turn out to be completely terrible for our survival."

"Then how on earth do you expect me to stay close to someone like that?" I asked, my voice laced with pure frustration as I gestured wildly toward the door.

"If she is truly this dangerous and calculating..."

"I told you, I would never let anyone bring harm to your life," Genevieve interrupted me sharply, her tone leaving absolutely no room for doubt.

She held my gaze with a soft, comforting look that instantly pushed down a fraction of my rising panic.

"Take a deep breath and calm your mind, child. For now, you simply need to pretend that you have no idea she is a fake."

"You must act as though she is still the same Isadora you have always known."

She reached out across the small space and gently took hold of my hand again, squeezing my fingers with extreme care.

"And when I tell you to pretend, Azura," she explained slowly, her eyes narrowing in a calculated expression, "I do not mean you should suddenly become sweet and loving toward her overnight."

"That would look suspicious to a trained spy. You need to take your time. Let her believe that her fake kindness is slowly working on you, and that you are gradually accepting her back into your personal space."

"And while you are playing that part... I need you to monitor her. Closely."

Torin gave a firm, supportive nod from his spot by the wall.

"That is actually smart, Aunty. If she truly believes that we are all falling for her act, she will eventually grow careless and slip up."

Genevieve turned her full focus back to me, her grip on my fingers tightening.

"Watch her every move, Azura. Watch everything she does when she thinks no one is looking."

"Track every step she takes, every single word that comes out of her mouth, and every lingering glance she casts around the rooms."

"If she is here to find a specific object or secret, she will eventually reveal her true purpose to us."

Suddenly, the heavy brass handle clicked for the second time tonight.

The door swung wide open with a loud thud against the wall.

Alpha Arthur stood towering in the doorway, his massive frame completely filling the entrance.

His piercing amber eyes swept across the interior of the room like a cold wind, tracking from Torin standing by the corner, over to me standing beside the stool, and finally landing on Genevieve’s tired face.

His handsome features were set into an incredibly hard, unyielding expression.

"Out," he said, his deep voice completely flat and echoing with an absolute authority that made the air freeze.

I opened my mouth instantly to argue.

"But Alpha Arthur..."

"I said get out," he repeated, his tone turning much sharper, his amber eyes flashing with a dangerous warning that told us his ten minutes were officially up.

Before I could say another syllable, Torin reached down and firmly grabbed my upper arm in a tight grip.

He forcefully pulled my body toward the exit, dragging me along as we both scrambled out of the private chamber like two little children who had just been caught stealing sweets from the kitchen cupboards.

The heavy oak door slammed shut right behind our heels with a loud, definitive bang.

The two of us stood completely silent in the dimly lit stone corridor, staring blankly at the closed wood in front of us.

My heart was still pounding wildly against my ribs, the sheer weight of everything we had just uncovered pressing heavily onto my chest.

Torin slowly let go of my arm, though his posture remained incredibly stiff and alert as he stared at the wall.

"I do not like where this story is going," I whispered into the quiet hallway, a cold feeling of dread settling deep into my bones.
