Beneath His Skin
Chapter 182: My wolf is here
Azura’s POV
The air in the narrow room grew completely stagnant, heavy with a thick, suffocating silence that pressed against my eardrums like a physical weight.
Rhydor remained frozen right beside the heavy oak door, his broad back still turned entirely toward me.
The echoes of my reckless, unyielding words seemed to bounce off the damp stone walls, hanging suspended in the small space between us like a cloud of smoke.
I kept my eyes locked onto the wide expanse of his shoulders, tracking the ragged, heavy rise and fall of his spine with every single breath he drew into his lungs.
He didn’t shift his boots. He didn’t drop his hands. He didn’t make a single sound for what felt like a painful eternity.
Then, his massive head turned just a fraction of an inch to the side, his sharp jawline cutting a stark silhouette against the dim light of the room.
"Say that again," Rhydor murmured, his voice incredibly quiet, laced with a raw, dangerous tremor that rasped against the quiet of the room.
He didn’t turn around to look at me yet; his eyes remained fixed blindly on the wooden panels of the doorframe.
I swallowed the sudden lump forming in my throat, forcing my spine to stay perfectly straight against the hard stone surface behind me.
I kept my voice completely flat, wrapping my words in the familiar, icy armor I had spent months building to keep him out.
"I do not repeat myself, Rhydor. You heard exactly what I said the first time."
Slowly and deliberately, his massive frame rotated.
He turned around to face me fully, his heavy leather boots dragging sharply against the grit of the stone floorboards.
His intense amber eyes snapped to mine, burning with a ferocious, concentrated heat that seemed to pin me directly to the wall.
When he spoke again, his voice dropped into a register lower and deeper than anything I had ever heard slip past his lips before.
"Azura... look directly at me," he commanded softly, his gaze tracking the shallow, rapid movement of my collarbones.
He took a slow, heavy step forward, closing the distance between us by a fraction.
"Are you uttering these words just to inflict another cruel punishment on me?" he asked, his voice cracking slightly at the edges as he searched my features for a lie.
"Are you doing this just to see if you can finally force my composure to break entirely?"
I held his burning gaze without a single flinch, my fingers tightening against the fabric of my loose green dress.
"Do I look like a woman who is currently playing a childish game with you, Rhydor?"
He took another step toward me.
It was a heavy, purposeful movement that seemed to consume the entire small room, driving out the cold air and replacing it with the raw, territorial heat radiating off his skin.
"Because if I take another step across this floor..." he rasped out, his voice dropping into a dark, breathless warning that vibrated directly against my chest, "if my hands actually touch your skin right now... I am not leaving this chamber tonight."
"I won’t be physically capable of pulling myself away from you. Think carefully, Azura."
He was standing entirely too close now.
He was close enough that the intense warmth of his body completely enveloped my senses, driving away the scent of the damp castle around us.
My chest heaved as my breathing turned shallow and erratic, my pulse hammering wildly against my throat.
I couldn’t stop the primal reaction of my flesh if I tried.
"Then do not leave," I whispered, the words barely scraping past my lips as I looked straight up into his fierce face.
He took that final, devastating step, positioning his massive frame directly in front of me until the sheer width of his shoulders completely blocked out the pale light bleeding through the arched window from the other side.
He wasn’t touching me yet. Not a single piece of our clothing brushed together.
But the physical space remaining between our bodies was so incredibly small, so terrifyingly thin, that I could clearly feel the rapid, violent thumping of his heartbeat echoing against the center of my own ribs.
His golden eyes dropped down, tracking the loose, oversized fit of the green fabric hanging off my lean shoulders.
He lifted his large, scarred right hand, hovering his palm mere inches away from the bare skin of my collarbone.
He held it there, his fingers trembling slightly with the sheer force of his restraint, but he didn’t make contact.
"You are shivering, Azura," he murmured, his eyes lifting back up to mine.
"I am not cold," I stated, my voice remarkably steady despite the chaotic storm brewing beneath my skin.
His large hand finally moved, traveling slowly up the side of my neck.
The rough, calloused tips of his fingers brushed gently against the line of my jaw, sending a violent, electric jolt of static electricity shooting straight down my spine.
He reached behind the crown of my head, his fingers navigating the tangled dark waves until he located the heavy iron pin holding my hair back.
With a smooth, reverent pull, he slid the metal free.
A heavy, dark curtain of hair instantly plummeted down, cascading over my shoulders and brushing against the loose fabric of my dress.
"Your hair is a complete mess," he whispered, his amber eyes watching the dark strands bounce against my skin.
"Let me fix it."
I let my head fall back completely, pressing the base of my skull flat against the cold stone wall behind me as I watched him through heavy eyelids.
"You are being entirely too quiet, Alpha," I murmured, a faint, mocking edge touching my lips. "It does not suit your loud and rude nature at all."
He raised his thumb, gently tracing the striking, brilliant white streak of hair running along the side of my temple, tucking it behind my ear with an immense amount of care.
"I am terrified of breaking you," he confessed, his rough voice dropping into a raw, vulnerable admission. "You look so incredibly small inside this dress. Like a ghost."
A sudden surge of defiance flared up in my chest at his words.
I lifted my right hand, flattening my palm firmly against the center of his chest.
Beneath the thin fabric of his dark shirt, his heart was racing like a wild, trapped beast, hammering frantically against my fingers.
"I have successfully survived the darkness of your iron cells, Rhydor," I stated, my voice turning hard, firm, and unyielding. "I have survived the brutality of your pack, the terrors of a war, and every single miserable thing you have ever thrown at my head. I am absolutely not going to break into pieces just because your hands are touching my skin."
He leaned down intensely, his broad chest pressing slightly against my hand, bringing his face so incredibly close that his hot breath brushed directly against my parted lips.
"Then tell me exactly what you want from me," he whispered fiercely, his eyes dropping to track the movement of my mouth. "Use your words, Azura. Give me the command."
I stared at his lips, completely unable to tear my gaze away as the newly awakened mate bond began to thrum like a violent wire inside my veins, begging for connection.
"Stop talking," I breathed out, my voice cracking into a bare whisper as I tightened my grip on his shirt. "Just... make me forget every single thing that exists outside this room."
He slammed his mouth against mine. There was absolutely no hesitation left in his body.
It wasn’t a gentle, testing touch, and it wasn’t a cautious request for permission; he kissed me like a starving man who had been forcefully holding himself back from a feast for a lifetime, like every single stone wall he had ever built to guard his pride had completely collapsed into the dirt.
A gasp escaped my throat, and I immediately pulled him closer, my fingers digging desperately through the fabric of his shirt to grip the solid muscles of his back.
He pressed his heavy weight fully into me, anchoring my body flat against the rough stone wall until I could feel every hard line of his frame matching mine.
He pulled back for a split second, his chest heaving frantically as he drew in a ragged breath of air.
He rested his broad forehead flat against mine, his amber eyes completely dark, dilated, and wild with an intense heat.
"I can feel it," he panted out, his voice completely breaking on the words as he gripped my waist with both hands.
A sharp tremor ran through his massive shoulders.
"God, Azura... through the bond... I can feel every single ounce of how lonely you have been," he whispered, a wave of profound, agonizing guilt pouring through the connection into my mind. "I am so incredibly sorry. I am so damn sorry for what I did to you."
I tightened my fingers in his long brown hair, forcefully pulling his face back down to mine, refusing to let the ghosts of our past ruin the heat of the present.
"Do not dare to apologize to me right now," I gasped out urgently against his lips. "I do not want a single drop of your guilt tonight. I do not want your regrets. I just want you."
A low, primal sound rumbled deep within his chest at my words.
His large hands slid down from my waist, gripping the undersides of my thighs, and with a sudden, effortless surge of strength, he lifted me completely off the stone floor, pressing my hips firmly against the wall.
"I am yours," he growled out, his voice rough and ragged against my jawline as his mouth traveled down to my neck.
"I have been yours since the very first night I saw you running in that forest. I was just far too stupid and arrogant to admit it to myself."
I let out a long, ragged breath, my head falling back against the stone as the mate bond vibrated with an absolute, deafening frequency through every single layer of my skin.
The sheer force of the emotion was a snowball rolling down a mountain, collecting speed and power until it was completely out of our control.
Words I hadn’t planned, thoughts I hadn’t even processed, came rushing past my lips before I could stop them.
"Logan was right..." I breathed out, my fingers tangling tighter in his hair.
He bit gently down on the sensitive skin right beneath my ear, his voice sounding entirely deep and gravelly against my flesh.
"What exactly did that wolf tell you, Pumpkin?"
I angled my head further to the side, giving his mouth complete, unhindered access to my neck as a wave of pure pleasure rippled through my chest.
"That I could not fight this pull forever," I panted, my vision blurring from the sheer intensity of his touch. "He said... he said the exact thing I spent months running away from... was the one thing I actually wanted most."
Why am I even telling his this
Rhydor let out a heavy groan against my skin, his grip tightening on my thighs until it was almost bruising.
"Then stop running from me," he rumbled against my flesh, his teeth grazing my collarbone. "Let me have every single piece of you tonight."
I gasped.
A sudden, violent shock of absolute, freezing energy hit the very center of my chest like a bucket of ice water being slammed into my lungs.
My eyes flew wide open, the dark heat of the bedroom instantly shattering into a million jagged pieces.
"Rhydor," I choked out, my voice turning incredibly sharp and breathless. "Rhydor, wait... stop."
He was completely dazed, his amber eyes dark and clouded with desire as he tried to lean back in to capture my mouth again, his body still pulsing with the residual heat of the slow burn.
"Azura? What is it? What’s wrong?"
I slammed my palms flat against his massive shoulders, using every single ounce of my strength to forcefully push his chest away from mine.
I slid down the wall until my boots hit the cold stone floor, my gaze darting blindly past his shoulder toward the empty corner of the room.
"My body..." I whispered, a terrifying tremor shaking my hands as I clutched at my chest. "It is freezing cold and burning hot at the same time. Inside my veins... something is wrong."
The romantic haze intensely vanished from Rhydor’s face, replaced by the sharp, lethal alertness of an Alpha warrior.
His amber eyes flashed brightly in the shadows, his head snapping around as he scanned the small chamber.
"The room... do you feel that? It’s vibrating."
I shook my head back and forth in rapid, frantic movements, my hands moving up to grip my head as my physical vision began to blur and warp violently.
"It is not the room," I cried out, my voice dropping into a terrified, breathless whisper as a barrage of sudden, chaotic images came crashing into my mind like a physical blow. "It is the book."
I saw it clearly behind my eyelids. Flashes of ancient leather. Browned parchment flipping at lightning speed through the dark. Glowing silver ink burning itself into the back of my mind.
"My journal..." I murmured, my teeth chattering as an unbearable chill wrapped around my spine. "The words... the nine words written on the pages."
I snapped my head up, my grey eyes wide, completely dilated, and trembling with absolute shock as I stared into Rhydor’s tight face.
"Logan was right," I whispered, the realization hitting me with the force of an earthquake.
"She is finally awake, Rhydor. She is breaking through."
Rhydor lunged forward, his large hands clamping firmly around my upper arms to steady my shaking frame.
His features were locked in a mask of intense, urgent panic.
"Who is awake, Azura? Tell me what you are seeing right now!"
I stared directly into his amber eyes, the immense, terrifying weight of what I was about to reveal pressing down on my chest until I could barely force the air past my throat.
Deep inside the empty, dead void of my soul, a massive, predatory spirit slowly stretched its limbs, and a deafening, ancient roar echoed through the chambers of my mind.
"My wolf," I whispered into the quiet room. "She’s here."
