Beneath His Skin

Chapter 178: The Weight of Choices

Azura’s POV

I felt it. The bond.

It was an undeniable, living thing now, humming directly beneath the surface of my skin like an electric current.

It pulsed with a heavy, intoxicating warmth that was completely foreign to my system, sending a slow vibration straight to the center of my chest where an empty void had existed for as long as I could remember.

It was the permanent connection linking my soul directly to Rhydor.

All these years, I had spent my life wondering what a true mate bond would feel like, trapped in the dark while others spoke of its magic.

I had wondered about the sheer agony and desperation he must have felt every single time I forcefully pushed him away, every time I bolted the doors to my heart and utterly refused to let him take a step inside.

Now, with the invisible thread vibrating violently between us, I finally understood the depth of that torment.

But understanding his pain did not mean I was going to blindly surrender to it.

It did not mean I was about to drop my guard and hand him the key to my life.

Across the room, Genevieve’s gaze shifted toward the heavy oak door.

Her blue eyes narrowed slightly, and with a casual, fluid flick of her wrist, as if she were simply swatting a bothersome fly out of the air, a burst of invisible magic snapped forward.

The thick wooden door swung open violently, banging loudly against the stone wall.

Two massive figures instantly stumbled forward into the light of the bedroom.

Rhydor and the Dragon King.

Neither of them actually fell to the floor; their highly trained predator instincts kicked in instantly, their boots scraping sharply against the stone as they awkwardly caught their balance at the very last second.

They straightened their spines and squared their broad shoulders immediately, plastering blank, stoic expressions across their faces as if they had merely been taking a casual stroll down the hallway.

But the bright crimson flush creeping up their necks and coloring their ears gave them away completely.

Two of the most terrifying, powerful leaders in the territory had just been caught red-handed, pressed flat against the wood, and eavesdropping like a pair of naughty children.

Genevieve folded her arms over her chest, tilting her head as she fixed them with the exact, unyielding look a mother gives to a couple of misbehaving boys caught stealing from the kitchen.

"How long have you two been standing out there?" she asked, her voice dripping with dry, utter amusement.

Neither of them offered a single word in response.

Rhydor suddenly found a spot on the stone floor incredibly fascinating, while the King merely adjusted his collar, staring blankly past her shoulder.

A cheerful, mocking voice suddenly broke the awkward silence from behind their massive frames.

"I completely fail to see how they call themselves leaders," Torin said, squeezing his way past the two giant men and walking confidently into the room.

He rolled his eyes, a massive grin plastering his face.

"I didn’t manage to catch everything you guys were saying in here, to be honest. Their massive ears were pressed so tightly against the wood that they blocked out half the sound. I was forced to stand too far back to get any of the juicy details."

"Torin!" Liona and I shouted at the exact same time, our voices bursting with pure, unadulterated joy.

His grin widened into a massive smile as he rushed past the silent men toward the edge of the bed.

Liona and I didn’t waste a single second; we lunged forward across the mattress and grabbed him at the exact same time, throwing our arms around his neck.

Liona pressed a hard, grateful kiss against his left cheek, while I slammed a matching kiss against his right side.

Torin froze instantly, his cheeks flushing a violent shade of bright red as he looked between the two of us, completely flustered.

"I am starting to feel like this is officially going to be one of the best days of my entire life," he stammered, clearing his throat nervously as he tried to adjust his rumpled tunic. "Well... since all this miserable pack drama started, at least."

He paused, his eyes shifting slightly past our shoulders to look toward the doorway.

Then his smile faltered, and his posture went incredibly rigid as he took in the sight of Rhydor and the Dragon King.

Both men were standing completely still, their dark stares locked onto Torin’s frame with expressions that promised a slow, exceptionally violent demise.

Torin swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he cleared his throat a second time.

"I am also starting to feel like I am going to be brutally strangled to death in my sleep tonight."

Liona and I slowly let go of him, turning our heads to glare directly at our respective mates.

Rhydor’s jaw was clamped shut so tightly that a thick muscle was twitching violently beneath his beautiful cheek.

Right beside him, the Dragon King’s grey eyes were already shifting rapidly, the irises bleeding into a dangerous, molten gold as his aura began to flare.

I didn’t hesitate.

I reached out and deliberately threw my arm heavily around Torin’s shoulders, pulling him close against my side as I fixed Rhydor with a cold stare.

"Do not even think about it, Rhydor," I warned, my voice cutting through the tension like a knife.

Beside me, Liona shifted her weight on the mattress, her sharp eyes locking onto the Dragon King with an absolute, unyielding authority.

"If you want whatever this chaotic thing is between us to actually stand a chance of working out..." she stated, her voice firm and completely devoid of fear, "you will start following my rules. Every single one of them."

An absolute, breathless quiet slammed into the room.

Every single person in the space turned their heads to stare at Liona in total shock.

The men looked completely stunned by her nerve, but only I truly understood the hidden weight behind her words.

The others were completely in the dark about the volatile dynamic brewing between them.

Torin looked between Liona and the towering king, his brow furrowing in deep confusion.

"Wait... what exactly is going on between the two of you right now?"

Liona’s tough exterior instantly cracked, a fierce, embarrassed blush creeping up her neck and staining her cheeks crimson.

She opened her mouth to snap a response, but the Dragon King beat her to it.

"She is my fated mate," he stated completely calmly, his deep voice vibrating through the stone floorboards as he stepped fully into the room.

Torin’s eyes went entirely wide, dropping his jaw as he looked at Liona as if she had just grown a second head.

"You mean... Are you actually mated to him? My Liona? To a literal dragon king?"

The very moment the words left Torin’s mouth, the Dragon King’s eyes shifted into a blinding, solid gold.

The sheer temperature in the room seemed to skyrocket in an instant.

"Say that phrase again," the king rasped out, his voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly dark growl that made the hair on my arms stand up. "Call her yours one more time, boy, and I promise you will die in an incredibly mysterious way before the sun sets."

Torin let out a sudden, loud hiccup, completely unable to control his body’s reflex as the crushing, suffocating weight of the King’s ancient aura pressed heavily against his chest.

He staggered back a half step, running a nervous hand through his hair.

"So... so this is the real reason you kept her locked up in this castle," Torin muttered, his voice shaking slightly as he tried to look brave. "Because you know deep down that you can’t force a separation between Azura and her. You realized you had no choice but to keep both of them under your roof."

The Dragon King kept his golden eyes locked onto Torin for a fraction of a second longer before his gaze slowly slid over to me.

"Not just because of that," he said, his tone turning completely flat and unreadable.

He raised a heavy hand and pointed a long finger directly at my throat.

"She is currently holding onto something that belongs entirely to me."

My hand moved automatically, my fingers wrapping tightly around the cool, heavy metal of the pendant resting against my collarbone.

I squeezed it, feeling the sharp edges of the casing digging into my palm.

"In reality, this belongs completely to my bloodline," I countered, my voice steady as I stared him down. "But yes... I suppose I have a little piece of your soul locked up inside it."

I paused, taking a slow breath as I looked around at the shocked faces of the people who loved me.

"And I can explain everything," I murmured softly.

****

Within a few minutes, the tension had been forced to simmer down, and we were all sitting tightly packed around a small, circular wooden table in the corner of the room.

The silence hung heavy and suffocating over the wood.

I had just finished pouring my heart out, telling them every single hidden truth that the nightmares had unlocked inside my head.
