The Birthday Invitation

The days passed quietly after Ophelia's visit to the abandoned Fine Arts Annex.

On the surface, life seemed normal.

She continued her work at the gallery.

Ethan remained busy with Ashford Holdings.

Vivian Sterling buried herself in event planning.

But beneath the calm...

Everyone was moving toward something they couldn't yet see.

Late Friday afternoon, Ophelia's phone rang.

"Ethan."

"Hi."

"Am I interrupting?"

She smiled as she organized a few sketches on her desk.

"Not at all."

"I wanted to remind you about tomorrow."

She frowned for a second.

"Tomorrow?"

"My grandmother's birthday."

She laughed softly.

"I knew I was forgetting something."

"I'll pick you up at six."

"I'll be ready."

There was a brief silence before Ethan spoke again.

"She's been asking about you every day."

Ophelia couldn't help smiling.

"I'll try not to disappoint her."

"You never could."

Before she could reply, Ethan added with a laugh,

"And Grandmother insists that if you don't come, she'll blame me."

"Then I suppose I have no choice."

"You really don't."

The following evening...

The Ashford estate glowed beneath strings of warm golden lights.

Unlike the grand charity gala, Elena's birthday celebration was intimate.

Only close friends and family had been invited.

As Ethan escorted Ophelia into the garden, Elena spotted them immediately.

"There she is!"

She hurried over with surprising energy and embraced Ophelia.

"My birthday is complete now."

Ophelia smiled warmly.

"Happy Birthday, Elena."

She handed her a carefully wrapped gift.

"I hope you'll like it."

Elena slowly unwrapped the package.

Inside was a beautifully restored first edition of one of her favorite classic novels.

For a moment, Elena was speechless.

"How did you know?"

Ethan looked just as surprised.

"I mentioned once that you loved classic literature."

Ophelia shrugged gently.

"I remembered."

Elena's eyes shimmered with emotion.

"My dear..."

"This is one of the most thoughtful gifts I've ever received."

She hugged Ophelia once more.

From across the garden, several guests exchanged approving smiles.

Nathan watched quietly from a distance.

Daniel stepped beside him.

"Miss Ophelia certainly knows how to win people over."

Nathan didn't answer immediately.

His gaze remained fixed on Ophelia.

"No."

He said at last.

"She pays attention."

Daniel looked confused.

Nathan continued,

"People reveal themselves through the little things they remember."

His eyes narrowed thoughtfully.

"And she's remembering everything."

As dinner began, laughter echoed through the garden.

Stories from Elena's younger days had everyone smiling.

Even Ophelia found herself laughing freely.

For a few precious hours...

She forgot about investigations.

Forgot about secret identities.

Forgot about revenge.

She simply enjoyed being surrounded by warmth.

Ethan noticed.

And seeing her happy made him happier than he cared to admit.

Later that evening, Elena asked Ophelia to accompany her inside the mansion.

"I have something to show you."

She led Ophelia down a quiet hallway lined with family portraits.

Stopping before one painting, Elena smiled.

"This was painted nearly thirty years ago."

It showed the Ashford family gathered in the estate's rose garden.

Ophelia studied each face carefully.

Then something caught her attention.

Near the edge of the painting stood a young boy.

He wasn't part of the family.

He was dressed more simply than everyone else.

Yet the artist had included him.

"Who is he?" Ophelia asked.

Elena's smile faded slightly.

"Oh..."

"I almost forgot he was in that painting."

She stepped closer.

"He was the son of one of the estate employees."

"He spent a lot of time here when he was little."

"What was his name?"

Elena searched her memory.

"It's been so many years..."

"I believe..."

Before she could finish, a crystal glass shattered in the dining room.

The sudden crash drew everyone's attention.

A maid rushed in.

"I'm so sorry!"

Elena sighed gently.

"We'll finish this story another time."

She led Ophelia back toward the celebration.

But Ophelia glanced once more at the painting.

The boy's face stayed in her mind.

She had a feeling...

His name would matter someday.

Outside the mansion gates...

A black sedan remained parked beneath the shadows.

The driver lowered a pair of binoculars.

"So..."

"They're becoming a family."

He started the engine.

"Let's see how long that lasts."

The car disappeared into the darkness before anyone noticed it had ever been there.
