An Invitation to the Ashford Estate

The wrought-iron gates opened slowly, revealing the magnificent Ashford estate.

Ophelia inhaled quietly before driving through. The mansion stood proudly beneath the evening sky, every window glowing with warm golden light. It was breathtaking.

And dangerous.

Tonight wasn't just dinner.

It was reconnaissance.

A uniformed butler greeted her as she stepped out of the car.

"Welcome, Miss Ophelia. Mr. Ethan is waiting for you."

She thanked him with a polite smile and followed him inside.

Crystal chandeliers illuminated the grand foyer, while priceless paintings and sculptures decorated every corner of the mansion. Every detail reflected generations of wealth and influence.

"So you made it."

Ophelia turned to find Ethan walking toward her in a charcoal-gray suit.

He smiled—a smile she was beginning to look forward to.

"I almost thought you'd change your mind."

"I considered it."

He laughed.

"I'm glad you didn't."

Without thinking, he offered his arm.

After the briefest hesitation, she accepted.

The dining room was elegant without being overwhelming.

At the head of the table sat Elena Ashford, her silver hair perfectly styled, her gentle smile immediately putting Ophelia at ease.

"So," Elena said warmly, "this is the young woman my grandson refuses to stop talking about."

Ethan sighed dramatically.

"Grandmother..."

Everyone laughed.

Even Ophelia.

"Come, my dear," Elena said kindly. "Sit beside Ethan."

Across the table sat Ethan's father and his wife, Celeste Harrison.

Unlike Elena's warmth, Celeste's smile was polished—carefully measured.

She observed Ophelia with quiet curiosity.

"It's lovely to finally meet you," Celeste said.

"The pleasure is mine," Ophelia replied calmly.

Something about Celeste made Ophelia instinctively stay on guard.

Dinner began with light conversation.

Elena had a way of making everyone feel included.

"So, Ophelia," she asked, "Ethan tells me you work with art."

"I do."

"What drew you to it?"

Ophelia smiled softly.

"When I was younger, a close friend convinced me to visit an art exhibition. I wasn't expecting much, but by the end of the day I realized every painting had its own story. Since then, I've loved discovering the meaning behind different pieces."

Elena nodded with delight.

"That's a beautiful way to see art."

"I think art says the things people sometimes can't."

For a brief moment, Ethan simply looked at her.

He wasn't admiring her beauty.

He was admiring the way she thought.

As the meal continued, Elena shared humorous stories from Ethan's childhood.

"You should have seen him at twelve," she teased.

"He insisted he could climb the old oak tree."

Ethan groaned.

"Grandmother, please..."

"He got halfway up before realizing he had no idea how to get down."

The entire table burst into laughter.

Even Celeste allowed herself a small smile.

Ophelia laughed harder than she had in months.

Watching her, Ethan couldn't help smiling.

Maybe bringing her here had been the right decision after all.

After dinner, Ethan led Ophelia into the estate gardens.

The evening breeze carried the scent of blooming roses.

"I'm sorry if my family asked too many questions," he said.

"They were normal questions."

"And?"

She looked toward the illuminated mansion.

"Your grandmother is wonderful."

He smiled.

"I knew you'd like her."

They walked in comfortable silence for a while.

Then Ophelia noticed movement upstairs.

A curtain shifted.

Someone had been watching them.

When she looked closer...

The curtain closed.

Inside the mansion, Celeste stepped away from the window.

She had watched every smile.

Every laugh.

Every glance Ethan had shared with Ophelia.

She couldn't explain it...

But something about the young woman unsettled her.

Not because she knew her.

Because she felt as though fate had brought Ophelia to the Ashford family for a reason.

And fate rarely knocked without bringing trouble.

Celeste slowly closed the curtains.

Outside, unaware she had been watched, Ophelia looked back at the mansion one last time.

This family was hiding something.

She could feel it.

She just didn't know how deeply those secrets ran.
