27:The Weight of the Heart
The Weight of the Heart
(Ethan's POV)
Monday morning arrived with a sky heavy with rain.
Ethan stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office, a cup of coffee growing cold in his hand.
Below, the city hurried through another workday.
His mind, however, was somewhere else.
It was with a woman whose laughter had become the brightest part of his week.
A knock interrupted his thoughts.
"Come in."
Richard Ashford stepped inside.
"I thought I'd find you here."
Ethan smiled.
"I have work."
Richard looked around the office before sitting in one of the leather chairs.
"You've had work for years."
"But lately..."
"You've been smiling."
Ethan laughed.
"Is everyone determined to point that out?"
Richard folded his arms.
"When your mother was alive, she used to say that a person only smiles like that for two reasons."
"Oh?"
"They've either found peace..."
He paused.
"...or they've found someone."
Silence settled between them.
Finally, Ethan admitted,
"I think I'm falling in love with her."
Richard's smile softened.
"I know."
Ethan sat opposite his father.
"What if she doesn't feel the same?"
Richard leaned back.
"Then you'll respect her."
"And if she does?"
Richard's eyes drifted toward an old photograph on the bookshelf.
A picture of him with Ethan's late mother.
"Then don't love her because she's perfect."
"Love her because she's real."
"People carry burdens we know nothing about."
"If she's carrying one..."
"Be the man who helps her feel safe enough to put it down."
Those words stayed with Ethan long after the conversation ended.
Across the city...
Ophelia stood inside a quiet museum gallery.
She was supposed to be examining a newly acquired sculpture.
Instead, she couldn't stop thinking about the photograph from the charity gala.
The circled face.
The words.
LOOK BEHIND THE CURTAIN.
Her phone vibrated.
Anonymous.
Tomorrow.
Archive Room B.
Don't fail.
Her heartbeat quickened.
Tomorrow.
The opportunity she had been waiting for.
The next afternoon, Richard Ashford welcomed her back to the estate.
"Thank you for returning so quickly."
"I wanted to finish my report."
"I'm grateful."
Richard smiled kindly.
"The west gallery is all yours."
As he walked away, Ethan appeared carrying two cups of coffee.
"I brought a peace offering."
She accepted one.
"You remembered."
"I remember everything."
She smiled.
"That could be dangerous."
"For who?"
"For you."
He laughed.
"I'll take my chances."
Most of the afternoon was spent examining paintings and antique sculptures.
Everything appeared ordinary.
Until Richard received an urgent phone call.
"I'll only be gone for a few minutes."
He excused himself.
Almost at the same moment, Ethan's assistant called.
"I'm sorry," Ethan said.
"I need to take this."
"I'll be right back."
Suddenly...
Ophelia was alone.
She glanced down the empty hallway.
No footsteps.
No voices.
Slowly, she walked toward the storage corridor.
At the very end stood a weathered wooden door.
A small brass plaque read:
Archive Room B
Her pulse raced.
She reached into her handbag.
The duplicate key Anonymous had given her weeks ago felt cold against her fingers.
She looked behind her.
Still no one.
The key slid into the lock.
Click.
The door opened.
Dust floated through the narrow beam of sunlight coming from a small window.
The room smelled of old paper and cedar wood.
Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling.
Boxes.
Photo albums.
Account books.
Old newspapers.
Everything carefully labeled.
She moved quietly, reading each box.
Foundation Records
Private Correspondence
Charity Events
Then...
One box caught her attention.
Ashford Foundation Gala – Eight Years Ago
Her breath caught.
She lifted the lid.
Inside were photographs.
Guest lists.
Invitations.
Newspaper clippings.
And...
A silver name badge.
She picked it up.
It read:
APRIL HAYES VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR
"So she really was here..."
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
Beneath the badge was a folded seating chart.
Someone had written notes in black ink.
Most names had simple check marks.
But beside April Hayes...
One word had been written.
WATCH
Ophelia's heart pounded so loudly she could barely hear anything else.
Who had written it?
Why was April being watched?
Before she could search further...
She heard footsteps.
Coming closer.
Quickly.
She returned everything exactly as she had found it, closed the box, and locked the room just as Ethan turned the corner.
"There you are."
She forced a smile.
"I was looking for the restroom."
He laughed.
"I suppose this house is big enough to get lost."
"If I disappear one day..."
"You'll know where to start looking."
"I'd search everywhere."
The sincerity in his voice caught her off guard.
For a moment...
She almost forgot she had just lied to him.
That evening, Ethan drove her home.
Rain tapped softly against the windshield.
Neither of them spoke much.
The silence wasn't uncomfortable.
It felt peaceful.
As they stopped outside her apartment, Ethan turned toward her.
"I've been meaning to ask you something."
She looked at him.
"What is it?"
He hesitated.
Not yet.
The words weren't ready.
Instead, he smiled.
"Next Saturday..."
"Would you spend the day with me?"
She smiled back.
"I'd like that."
Neither of them noticed the dark SUV parked across the street.
Inside sat a man wearing black gloves.
He raised a camera.
Click.
Another photograph.
This time...
The lens focused on Ophelia.
Then on Ethan.
Finally...
On the Ashford family crest hanging from Ethan's car keys.
The photographer lowered his camera.
Picked up his phone.
And made one call.
"They're closer than ever."
A calm voice answered.
"Good."
"It's time for the next phase."
The call ended.
The man started the engine.
And disappeared into the night.
