Chapter 130: Chapter 126: King of Overthinking
"Purr-loo..."
A few minutes later, when Bai Ya brought Hess back, he still looked like he wasn’t fully awake.
Then he was promptly thumped on the head by Lu Wei.
"Wake up!"
"Purr-loo!"
Hess snapped awake, shivering in a very human-like way, his eyes wide.
’Good, it seems he’s sobered up.’
Lu Wei looked away and nodded to Geluo.
Geluo immediately walked over to Bai Ya. He first mumbled something under his breath, then looked directly into Hess’s eyes and said, word by word:
"Hess."
"Loo?"
Hess froze, his eyes instantly filled with astonishment.
After staring at Geluo for a long moment, he let out a tentative grunt: "Purr-loo?"
"Mhm, yes."
"Loo-loo-loo?"
"That’s right."
"Purr-loo-loo-loo!!!"
"..."
From confusion to doubt, from doubt to excitement.
After just a few exchanges, Hess leaped right out of Bai Ya’s arms and started bouncing endlessly in front of Geluo, seemingly overcome with excitement.
Lu Wei, on the other hand, was completely lost.
After all, he could only hear what Geluo said, but he couldn’t understand what Hess was "loo-loo-ing" about.
’It’s probably something like, "Are you talking to me?"’
’Looking at it this way, this Beast Language skill is pretty useful.’
Although it only allows for simple communication, it should be enough to interrogate a goblin about where it hid its treasure.
’When I have more money later, I could get a Skill Book and learn it myself.’
With that thought in mind, Lu Wei focused his attention back on Hess.
By now, Geluo had led him to the edge of a water-filled pitfall trap.
"Smell something, bark!"
As Hess watched in confusion, Geluo first gave him a simple command.
Then, he picked him up again, ran about ten meters toward the cave entrance, and shouted once more:
"No smell, no bark!"
’Yep, a very typical way to train a dog.’
Unfortunately, Hess didn’t seem to understand at all. His wide eyes were filled with confusion.
’Forget it. Looks like there’s no need to learn it after all.’
Seeing this, Lu Wei immediately dismissed his earlier idea.
From the looks of it, while Beast Language allowed for simple communication with animals, it didn’t change their Intelligence.
And Intelligence determined their ability to understand.
So, something like "interrogating a goblin" was most likely impossible.
’Bai Ya could learn it, though.’
’It’s free, after all.’
"That’s Beast Language."
While Geluo was still busy "training the dog," Lu Wei walked over to the dumbfounded Bai Ya and explained in a low voice, "It’s a Universal Skill that allows for simple communication with animals."
"So, when you guys go out later, ahem, you know what I mean..."
Since Marcus and the others were right there, Lu Wei couldn’t be too direct.
He felt it was obvious enough that even someone with 1 point of Perception should be able to get it.
But who knew he would still overestimate Bai Ya’s reaction speed.
"Huh? I don’t get it."
"I swear to god... If you don’t get it, just take your time and think!"
Gritting his teeth, Lu Wei couldn’t help but get angry seeing her dazed expression, and his tone became a bit harsh.
Bai Ya, however, was used to this. She didn’t dare say anything, just gave a wronged "oh" and lowered her head to start thinking about what he meant.
Meanwhile, Marcus and the others nearby were stunned once again.
’Seriously, is this even reasonable??’
’A Mage, someone you might not even see once a year in Heitai Town, is being ordered around, and now she doesn’t even dare to talk back after being scolded???’
’What kind of leverage does Lu Wei have on this Miss Mage??’
’Oh, right, and Furen over there!’
’Judging by his clan emblem, he’s undoubtedly from the Delaroca Clan!’
’That’s one of the top three most powerful families in Kalin Port!’
’Why would he willingly follow Lu Wei?’
’Could it be...’
His gaze shifted from Bai Ya to Furen, and finally landed back on Lu Wei.
His Adam’s apple bobbed. For some reason, Marcus suddenly felt that Lu Wei had become incredibly profound and mysterious.
’He couldn’t be the heir of some great figure, could he?’
’The descendant of a Great Noble, or even a noble Prince, venturing out alone in his youth to train his mettle and courage before returning to inherit his title or even the throne.’
"There are quite a few stories like that..."
"And he has very distinctive black hair and black eyes..."
"That combination is rare in the Northern River Valley, even among..."
"Wait!"
Suddenly, Marcus’s eyes widened. He thought of a name that struck fear into the hearts of everyone in the entire Kingdom—
A mysterious and powerful secret organization, said to have several super High Tier Professionals, whose members were mostly dark-haired, possessing the Power to overthrow the Royal Court!
The Dusk Shadow Association!
...
...
It took about ten minutes, but Geluo finally managed to train Hess.
After a few repeated tests to make sure there were no problems, Lu Wei stuffed Hess into his backpack.
He had Geluo tell him that if he worked hard, he could have a whole pot of mushroom soup tonight.
"Purr-loo-loo!"
Immediately, an excited grunt came from the backpack.
"He says he wants wine," Geluo translated from the side.
"No problem. He can drink himself to death for all I care."
Lu Wei pursed his lips, shot a look back at Bai Ya, and then prepared to head deeper into the cave.
Furen and Urzha were already getting impatient.
Mirana still wore her usual expressionless face.
Only Marcus was looking at him a little strangely.
"Marcus, what’s wrong?"
Lu Wei asked, puzzled, "Do you have any other questions?"
"Ah, no, not at all!"
Marcus quickly waved his hands, his gaze involuntarily drifting to the Confession in Lu Wei’s hand.
Mola Crystal Steel, with a blade that seemed to be coated in a layer of Saracenic Steel.
’Nearly flawless craftsmanship, definitely the work of a Master.’
’And this Inlaid Gemstone that looks anything but simple...’
He only let his gaze linger for a moment before quickly looking away. Ever since the thought that "Lu Wei might be a member of the Dusk Shadow Association" had entered his mind, every observation now seemed to provide new evidence to support it.
But even so, he couldn’t bring himself to believe it was true.
After all, the speculation was simply too far-fetched.
The Dusk Shadow Association... even their outermost members were said to be nobles of Viscount rank or higher, or Professionals at Level 5 or above.
And Lu Wei wasn’t even a Professional.
’I must be overthinking this.’
’It’s all just a coincidence.’
Comforting himself with these thoughts, Marcus tried to calm his emotions and looked at Lu Wei again.
"It’s getting late. We should get going."
"Oh, okay."
Lu Wei nodded, slightly confused, not quite understanding what had just been up with Marcus.
But he couldn’t be bothered to think about it too much. He took a running leap and was the first to jump to the other side of the pitfall trap.
Following him, Marcus, Urzha, Furen, and Mirana jumped across in succession.
"You all be careful!"
On the other side, Bai Ya called out with a worried expression. Though she said "you all," her eyes were fixed on Lu Wei.
"I know."
Lu Wei mumbled and waved a hand. "You can go out and cook."
"Okay... Then I’ll make your favorite vine root and mushroom stew!"
"Yeah, yeah, whatever you want."
"Okay! What main course do you want with it?"
"Seriously, are you done yet??"
"Oh, oh, I’ll stop talking. No need to be so mean..."
Seeing Lu Wei getting visibly irritated, Bai Ya quickly shut her mouth, looking wronged and saying no more.
And Marcus, who had witnessed the entire exchange, once again began to question his own judgment.
He looked at the Eye of True Sight Badge on Bai Ya’s chest, then back at the impatient Lu Wei.
’Honestly.’
’Something is really not right here...’
