Beast Taming: My Beasts Grind, Die, and Respawn
Chapter 396: Something for Himself
Chapter 396: Something for Himself
The large stone he’d started the night after Crowe’s invitation ran out on Monday, nearly three weeks after he’d begun it.
He put it at the back of the drawer with the other empties, unwrapped a fresh one, and took one thread from it before he stopped for the night.
Six big ones sat in the cloth now, untouched, with the two little Thornwatch stones on the other side.
He’d felt something building for a week. It wasn’t dramatic. It was the kind of thing he only noticed because he wrote everything down.
The Core filled faster after a cast now. On the mat in the stall, the packing after it was full had started to feel less like pressing into stone and more like pressing into packed earth.
There was give in it. Every night, he could put in a few more threads before the first grit he couldn’t clear.
Twice that week, he’d felt the urge to keep going past the grit, just to see. Both times he’d stopped, written down the time, and gone to bed. Brand’s rule had been simple.
He didn’t enjoy stopping when it felt close. Having the log ready for Brand made it easier to leave the next decision until she could check him.
On Tuesday, he went to Brand with his log.
She read it at her desk while he waited. Every session for three weeks: start time, stop time, what he’d felt, where he’d stopped.
She ran her finger down the column of stop times, and he watched her notice the same thing he’d noticed. They were getting longer, slowly, and they’d stopped jumping about.
"Sit," she said, and nodded at the mat.
He sat, with the new stone in his palm, and drew.
It came easily now. He didn’t have to think about the thread. It came thin and steady, the grit cleared below the Core in a few seconds, and he sank it and took the next. His breathing kept the rhythm by itself.
Once his available reserve was replenished, he continued the measured refinement Brand had taught him. The deeper pressure built gradually, familiar from the recent sessions when the energy had begun to settle more evenly. He kept each thread small.
Today, it felt different.
It took him a while to notice. The pressure inside the knot under his breastbone was deeper than it usually was. It wasn’t uncomfortable. It was dense.
Every thread he sank seemed to settle further in than the one before, as if there were more room down there than there should be.
He opened his eyes.
Brand was watching her tablet, and her expression had changed slightly.
"Keep going," she said quietly. "Same threads. Don’t change anything."
He kept going.
It didn’t happen all at once. He’d half expected it to. He’d half expected a crack, or a flash, the way his first breakthrough had been, when the Core formed and Glitch’s body had changed under his hand.
This was quieter.
He drew. He refined. He sank. And somewhere around the twentieth thread, the knot in his chest settled. There was no other word for it.
It was like a load shifting in a pack, all at once, into a better place. Suddenly it was sitting lower and heavier and steadier than it had ever sat before.
The pressure eased, and in its place there was room.
He stopped and sat there with his eyes closed.
"Open your eyes," Brand said.
He did. She turned the tablet toward him.
[Astor, Jin — Core reading]
[Combat Rank: 2 — 2-Star]
[Bond Core: stable. Stripes: 6.]
He looked at it for a long time.
"That’s two," Brand said. She didn’t sound surprised. She sounded satisfied, the way people did when a thing they’d built came out the shape they’d built it.
"The recent work has been consistent," Brand said. "And you had a foundation to build on before that. Keep these records. They’ll help when progress feels slower."
"Glitch went up last week," Jin said, before he could stop himself.
Brand nodded. "His advance supports your bond, but it doesn’t do this cultivation for you. You were ready." She made a note. "An easy practice set this afternoon. Learn how the reserve feels before you ask more of it."
He walked out of the cultivation wing and stood on the steps in the sun for a minute, feeling the new weight in his chest. It wasn’t like the strength Glitch had gained. It was more like a bigger room. A deeper well.
Two Stars, he thought. Me and him both.
He found out what it meant that afternoon in Yard Three.
Lucian had the training stave. Jin had the borrowed spear. They ran the drill they’d run a hundred times, Lucian coming down the lane in Stormsteps and Jin setting a patch where he’d stop.
They kept the patches as brief and small as in their earlier practice. Jin felt less of a catch as he formed them, and after the first set he had more room in his reserve than he’d expected. He still paused when his placement began to drift.
"Again?" Lucian asked.
"After a minute. Brand said easy."
They switched to the spear while he rested the skill. Lucian approached without Stormstep first, giving Jin time to keep the padded point between them as he moved. Twice he knocked it aside and tapped Jin’s shoulder. The third time, Jin recovered the point before retreating another step.
On the next approach Lucian used a short Stormstep. Jin stepped off the line and brought the spear around with him, stopping its padded tip a hand’s width from Lucian’s chest.
Lucian stopped dead and looked down at it.
"Huh," he said.
"I was aiming for your shoulder."
"You’d still have hit something." Lucian pushed the tip aside with one finger. "Do that to Teller on Thursday."
"Teller would take it off me."
"Probably," Lucian agreed. "But he’d have to think about it first."
"Your casts looked steadier," Lucian said, leaning on the stave.
"Two Stars."
Lucian’s eyebrows went up. He grinned. "Since when?"
"Since about one o’clock."
"Then you can buy dinner."
They ate at the noodle place by the east gate, the steamed windows and the shouting cook. Lucian ordered for both of them without asking, and Jin let him.
When the food came, Jin took the folded drawing out of his jacket pocket and put it on the table between them.
Lucian looked at it, then picked it up and looked at it properly, turning it toward the light.
"A spear," he said.
"A short one. About my height."
"Who drew this?"
"A smith on the tack street. Grey hair. Scars."
"Ottilie’s." Lucian nodded slowly. "She made my knife. She’s good." He traced the line of the shaft with one finger. "Weight forward. Replaceable head." He looked up. "This is for Teller?"
"This is for the next Teller. And the one after that." Jin pushed noodles round his bowl. "I can get out of the way now. Mostly. I can’t do anything after that."
"I know. I watched." Lucian put the drawing down.
"It should give you something to make them respect the distance," Lucian said. "As long as you keep moving with it. Teller won’t politely walk onto the point." He tapped the number at the bottom. "That’s a lot."
"Forty-eight."
"That’s a lot."
"I know."
Lucian looked at him with interest. "But you’re thinking about it."
"I’m thinking about it." Jin found he was smiling.
"For a long time I couldn’t think about things like that. Everything was food, or feed, or the rent, or Glitch’s medical bills. Now my sister’s got an allowance, and home’s all right, and I can think about something that’s just..." He stopped.
"For you," Lucian said.
"Yeah."
"About time." Lucian picked up his chopsticks again. "Try the grip before she finishes it. Mine looked fine in the shop. Once my hands sweat, I keep having to shift it."
"I thought that was part of your technique."
"It is now. It’s called regretting a purchase."
Jin laughed and wrote try the grip beneath the number.
He didn’t decide that night. He didn’t need to. He folded the drawing and put it back in his jacket pocket with the care he’d once given to feed receipts.
He ate while Lucian described how Bram had caught him in the same group session, demonstrating with a pair of chopsticks until Jin moved his bowl out of reach. The drawing stayed in his pocket. He could try the grip, ask another question, decide in his own time. He liked having that much room.
