Beast Taming: My Beasts Grind, Die, and Respawn
Chapter 238: Exceptional, Not Impossible
Chapter 238: Exceptional, Not Impossible
The reaction started on the fourth day of consolidation and it was smaller than Jin had braced for.
Three students looked twice at Glitch in the corridor outside Applied Ecology, which was three more than usual, and one of them said something quiet to the person beside her.
That was most of it.
The exception was Lysa Pell, who found him at the dining hall with her notebook already out.
"Six-Star."
"Yeah."
"When?"
"Four days ago."
She wrote that down and then said, "Your five-star registered on the eleventh of last month. That’s five weeks."
"You’ve got the date?"
"I’ve got everybody’s dates. It’s a ladder, Astor, I’d be an idiot not to." Lysa flipped a page. "Five weeks is fast. What’s the mechanical change?"
That was, Jin thought, an entirely characteristic question. Corven would have asked what it meant for a rematch. Bram would have said one word and gone back to his lunch.
"Denser. Better seated plating, better load distribution, and his turning’s more stable than it was." He shrugged. "He’s not faster. It’s the same body doing the same things more efficiently."
"So he still can’t corner."
"He still can’t corner."
"Good," said Lysa, writing. "Then I still have a plan. What’s the throat situation? The corrosive skill’s the thing I actually can’t work around."
"Maximal output is restricted through consolidation. The low-output test isn’t happening before the end of the week."
"Mm." She closed the notebook and looked at him. "You know what’s annoying? It’s not the six-star. It’s that you had a beast everybody in that lecture felt sorry for and now the mechanical answer to him is nothing you can do about the middle of the arena."
"You’ll think of something."
"I’ve thought of four things. Two of them are terrible." She got up. "I’m taking the rank back in the spring cycle."
The development assessor’s note came through the following day and was two lines long.
[Development pace: exceptional. Within established range for a Bronze-quality beast receiving concentrated nutritional support, structured training, repeated field deployment, and exterior Tide exposure.]
[Comparative flag: maintained. Routine observation.]
Same flag. Same wording. Nothing else.
Jin read it and felt the tension he had been carrying since the scan go out of his shoulders.
Exceptional. Not impossible.
The controlled movement assessment came on day six and was more informative than the scanner had been.
It was not a duel. Doyen had been specific: walking load, turning, a measured bracing test, a Tremor Sense discrimination exercise, and nothing else.
The bracing test was where the problem showed up.
The rig applied a measured horizontal force and Glitch was supposed to hold position against it. He held it. He also over-braced — put considerably more into it than the force required, drove his feet into the plate, and moved the entire rig eleven centimeters backward, which was not supposed to be mechanically possible at that setting.
"Again," said Jin. "Less."
Glitch did it again with less and it was still too much.
The turning was the same story in reverse. He began rotations with the force his old body had needed and the new one delivered more, so he over-rotated by a few degrees on three of five attempts and had to correct.
He’s driving a heavier car and he hasn’t recalibrated the pedals.
That was familiar. He had gone through exactly this after the evolution, and it had taken about a fortnight then, and he expected the same now with less to fix.
The Tremor Sense exercise went well and told him nothing new. The skill was the skill. Six-Star had not made the ground clearer; it had made the animal standing on it steadier.
Doyen’s summary: stable, consolidating, calibration ongoing. The throat test would wait until the end of the week, exactly as ordered. One clean movement assessment was information; adding another test because Glitch felt ready would only be appetite wearing a lab coat.
The leave approval arrived that evening. Jin packed the folded E-9 sector map into its case, checked the marked distances once more, and set it beside the two thousand Credits he still intended to transfer in person.
Arthur had asked him to bring the map.
This time, Jin was going to bring the whole answer with it.
He went home on day nine.
The Outer Ring smelled the way it always had, which was recycled air and hydroponic damp and the particular chemical note of the water treatment on the fourth level, and Jin had not realized how completely he had stopped noticing it until he came back.
Elena opened the door and did not say hello. She looked at him for about three seconds, put her hands on both his shoulders, and then said, "You’ve lost weight."
"I’ve been eating academy food. It’s better than it was."
"You’ve lost weight in the face." She steered him inside. "Sit down. When did you last sleep properly?"
"Four days ago. Nine hours."
"Four days—"
"That’s a lot better than it was during the Tide, and I’m on a reduced schedule for another week, so I’ll be sleeping like a corpse." Jin sat. "Also I brought the map."
Arthur, from the chair by the wall, said, "Then eat first."
Elsa arrived from her shift halfway through the meal and hit both her emotions in about eleven seconds.
"You’re back—" and then she saw the map case on the table and her face changed. "You said controlled. You said controlled exterior."
"It was."
"E-8 collapsed into your sector. I read the shelter notice. It said ’sector consolidation under pressure,’ which took me about four minutes to work out meant a whole defensive position fell over and had to run somewhere, and the somewhere was you."
"Yes."
"You said controlled."
"It was controlled when it was assigned," said Jin. "It stopped being controlled when E-8 entered our boundary at Tide minute fifty-nine."
Elsa sat down hard.
"You’re not even going to argue about it."
"No. You’re right. I’m not going to pretend it went the way the briefing said."
She looked at him for a moment and then, unexpectedly, took his hand across the table and squeezed it hard enough to hurt, and then let go and started eating like nothing had happened.
