Beast Devourer: I Grow Stronger by Eating Monsters

Chapter 190: She Tried to Save Me by Killing Me

Elise didn’t enter the inn immediately.

Neither did Raven.

For several seconds, they remained outside the door, looking at each other as though they had both reached the same conclusion: talking inside, surrounded by civilians, was a bad idea.

Valeria broke the silence first.

"There’s a courtyard in the back."

Elise nodded.

"That works."

Roland opened the side door.

"Of course it does."

Raven looked at him.

"What?"

"Nothing. I’m just enjoying the fact that a theological discussion requires an evacuation route."

"The evacuation route isn’t for the theology."

Roland glanced at Elise.

"Of course."

The rear courtyard was almost empty. Two wagons stood near a shed, with a stack of firewood against one wall and a low stone barrier separating the property from open fields beyond.

Raven positioned himself where he could see both the door and the side road.

Elise noticed.

She didn’t comment.

Valeria remained on Raven’s right while Roland stayed farther back.

Elise stopped in front of him.

"I want to try something before we continue talking."

Raven regarded her.

"That’s usually a bad way to begin."

"I won’t touch you."

"Better."

"Only an external reading."

Valeria folded her arms.

"What exactly does that mean?"

Elise turned toward her.

"I’ll project a minimal amount of sacred mana. It won’t penetrate deeply. It will only react to external influences integrated into his body."

Raven watched her carefully.

"Can it hurt me?"

Elise answered without pretending certainty.

"It shouldn’t."

"That isn’t no."

"Because I don’t know how Predation will react."

Raven preferred that to a false guarantee.

"What are you looking for?"

"Separation."

"Explain."

Elise brought her hands together loosely in front of herself.

"If Predation still functions as an external Authority, even after becoming biologically integrated, there should be a distinguishable boundary between your mana, your soul, and its influence."

"And if there isn’t?"

Her pause was brief.

"Then my concern increases."

"Reassuring."

She ignored the comment.

"You don’t have to agree."

Raven looked at her hands. Predator’s Instinct remained quiet, with no sign that she was preparing an attack or trying to conceal one.

Elise was actually waiting for permission.

"External only," Raven said. "Nothing deeper."

"Yes."

"If I feel you pushing beyond that, we stop."

"Agreed."

Valeria looked at him.

"Are you sure?"

"No."

"Excellent."

Raven returned his attention to Elise.

"Do it."

She raised one hand without pointing it at him and opened her fingers.

White light gathered around her palm, small and warm, nothing like the kind of violence Raven expected from a Champion.

The sacred mana moved slowly toward him and touched his skin.

Radiant Metabolism reacted.

[Foreign Sacred Mana Detected.]

[Concentration: LOW.]

[Metabolic Processing Initiated.]

Warmth spread through Raven’s arm rather than pain. The energy entered only slightly beneath his skin, and his new Trait responded immediately, absorbing and converting a tiny portion before it could travel farther.

[Trace Sacred Mana Metabolized.]

[Energy Conversion: MINIMAL.]

Elise froze.

The light around her hand flickered.

Raven looked at her.

"What?"

She didn’t answer.

The kindness disappeared from her expression, replaced not by hostility but by intense concentration.

Elise increased the sensitivity of the reading slightly.

Predation responded.

[External Sacred Analysis Detected.]

[No Hostile Action Identified.]

Raven allowed it to continue.

Then Elise found something.

Her eyes dropped toward his chest.

"That wasn’t in the report."

"A lot of things aren’t."

"Raven."

Her voice had changed.

Valeria heard it too.

"What did you find?"

Elise kept staring at him.

"Consecrated structures."

Roland looked from Raven toward the room where they had left the Hound’s remains.

"Ah."

Elise stepped closer.

Raven didn’t retreat.

"There are patterns from the Penance Hound inside you."

"Yes."

The immediate answer seemed to disturb her more than denial would have.

"Yes?"

"I told you I studied it."

"You told me you ate parts of it."

"That too."

Elise projected the reading again.

Radiant Metabolism absorbed another trace amount.

She felt it happen.

"You’re processing my mana."

"A small amount."

Elise slowly lowered her hand.

"Since when?"

"This morning."

"This morning?"

"Yes."

Valeria sighed.

"I warned you that answer was going to sound bad."

Raven ignored her.

Elise looked down at her own hand, then back at him.

"You consumed the Lumen Gland."

Raven raised an eyebrow.

"You know which structure it was."

"Of course I know which structure it was."

For the first time, genuine frustration entered her voice.

"Raven, the Consecrated Lumen Gland is a specialized sacred organ."

"I discovered that."

"It was never meant to exist inside a human body."

"Part of its function does now."

Elise went completely still.

Roland murmured, "And there it is."

Valeria looked at him.

"What?"

"The moment she stops trying to understand him and starts worrying much more."

Elise heard him.

She didn’t deny it.

"I need to examine you fully."

Raven answered immediately.

"No."

"This changes the situation."

"Not for me."

"You integrated a sacred structure that did not belong in your body."

"It worked."

"That is not the point."

"It’s part of the point."

Elise took a slow breath.

"You do not know what Predation is doing to you."

"I know quite a lot."

"Not enough."

"That applies to everyone."

"Raven."

She moved one step closer. Predator’s Instinct still detected no immediate hostility, but Raven could feel the urgency behind her restraint now.

"Let me examine the integration."

"No."

"I can do it without harming you."

"We already discussed this."

"Before, I didn’t know you were assimilating consecrated structures."

"And I still know that you intend to decide whether my choices remain valid based on what you find."

That stopped her.

Raven continued.

"So I’m not giving you deeper access to my body or soul so you can potentially use the result as justification to ignore my answer afterward."

Elise frowned.

"That isn’t how it works."

"Isn’t it?"

She opened her mouth.

Raven waited.

No clear denial came.

"That’s what I thought."

Valeria looked toward Elise.

"He has a point."

Elise turned to her.

"Lady Valeria, if this Authority is integrating sacred structures and modifying his ability to process consecrated mana, then whatever is happening may be progressing far faster than we believed."

"It may be."

"Then I need to know how far."

"And he said no."

Elise looked at Raven again.

"I can’t ignore this."

"You can."

"Not responsibly."

"That’s different."

The tension rose, but it still wasn’t quite hostility.

Elise breathed in.

"Then give me another option."

Raven considered it.

"We keep talking."

"That’s no longer enough."

"For you."

"For anyone."

"That’s where we disagree."

Elise closed her eyes for a moment.

When they opened, she had made a decision.

Raven saw it before Predator’s Instinct reacted.

Not killing intent.

Not an intent to injure.

Control.

Elise raised two fingers.

"I’m sorry."

Raven was already moving.

Too late.

One word left her mouth.

"Halt."

The world became heavy.

Every muscle in Raven’s body tightened at once. His left arm almost completely stopped responding while his right leg locked beneath him, white mana spreading around joints and nerves.

[Foreign Sacred Restriction Detected.]

[Radiant Metabolism Responding.]

[Damage Mitigation: LIMITED.]

[Motor Interference Remains ACTIVE.]

Raven tried moving his hand.

Nothing.

Elise stepped closer.

"I don’t want to hurt you."

"Interesting way of showing it."

"I only need to immobilize you."

Valeria reacted.

Blood Threads snapped into existence.

Elise turned one hand, and a layer of white light passed through them. It didn’t completely destroy the Threads, but weakened their structure enough that they collapsed.

Valeria stepped back.

"Raven."

"Don’t attack her directly."

"I noticed."

Roland had disappeared from where he had been standing.

Good.

Elise remained focused on Raven.

"Don’t make this harder."

Raven flexed the fingers of his right hand.

They responded.

The left remained nearly useless, while Radiant Metabolism slowly processed the sacred mana embedded in his tissues.

Much too slowly.

"You have an interesting definition of saving someone."

Elise maintained the restriction.

"I would rather have you hate me than die because I waited too long."

Raven believed her.

That was precisely why arguing about her intentions was useless.

He moved his left foot slightly, but Burst Step needed more than that and Elise was already entering range.

Raven made his decision.

Mk.I.

His right hand moved.

He pulled the rifle free.

Elise stopped, not from fear but recognition.

"Raven."

"You started this."

"I don’t want to fight you."

"Then stop immobilizing me."

She didn’t.

Raven raised the Mk.I. His left arm couldn’t help stabilize it, forcing him to brace the stock against his shoulder and control the weapon one-handed.

Bad position.

Good enough.

Elise watched the blue filaments ignite.

She had read the reports.

That was different from seeing the weapon activate in front of her.

Mana began accumulating.

Raven already knew he couldn’t win a direct confrontation. Elise was controlling most of his body with a technique she probably didn’t even consider serious.

He didn’t need victory.

He needed an opening.

FORGE updated.

[Charge Stable.]

[Recommended Discharge Available.]

Elise raised one hand.

A white barrier appeared.

Fast.

Thin.

Almost casual.

Probably more than enough for anything she expected from an Awakened.

Raven fired.

BOOM.

The recoil drove through his shoulder.

The projectile struck the barrier with a sound closer to an enormous sheet of glass under impossible pressure than stone or metal.

The white surface deformed.

The projectile slowed.

Then stopped.

The barrier had held.

A line appeared across its center.

CRACK.

Elise didn’t move.

A second fracture spread beside the first.

Raven saw pure surprise in her eyes.

Not fear or pain.

Disbelief.

Half a second.

That was enough.

"Now."

Valeria reacted instantly.

She didn’t attack Elise.

She learned quickly.

Blood erupted from a small pouch at her belt, not as a spear but as mist. A red curtain expanded between Raven and Elise while sacred mana immediately began degrading it.

It didn’t need to survive long.

Raven opened the breech by reflex.

Empty.

He didn’t reload.

His right leg remained partially locked despite Radiant Metabolism weakening the restriction.

Burst Step.

Pain tore through the limb.

The Skill activated anyway.

Raven cleared the courtyard.

Roland was already waiting with three horses.

"Took you long enough."

"Champion."

"Excuse accepted."

Valeria emerged behind them as white light tore through the blood mist.

Elise stepped into view.

Mercy remained sheathed.

That was reassuring only until Raven remembered she had nearly immobilized him without touching it.

He mounted with difficulty.

His left arm barely responded.

"Move."

Roland needed no second instruction.

The horses launched forward.

Elise reached the road as they pulled away.

Raven knew she could follow them. A Champion didn’t need to compete with horses under the same physical rules they did.

She raised one hand.

Light gathered.

Raven looked back.

Predator’s Instinct reacted.

This time there was real danger—not killing intent, but enough power that the distinction mattered very little.

"Split."

Roland took the left.

Valeria the right.

Raven maintained the center.

Elise didn’t release the technique.

The light around her hand intensified for several seconds, then vanished.

Raven understood why.

They were still too close to Bellcross. Fields surrounded the road, workers were nearby, and homes remained visible behind them. Using enough force to stop all three reliably meant risking Raven’s life or someone else’s.

Elise wasn’t willing to take that risk.

That was useful information, but Raven didn’t mistake restraint for weakness.

Elise advanced several more steps before stopping.

She didn’t pursue.

Valeria glanced back from her horse.

"She’s letting us go?"

"For now."

"She can catch us."

"Yes."

Roland looked over his shoulder.

"Then why isn’t she?"

"Because stopping us safely would require more force than she’s willing to use here."

Valeria understood.

"And she doesn’t know how much you can survive."

"Or how much collateral damage she’d cause."

Roland considered that.

"That seems useful."

"It is."

Raven moved the fingers of his left hand.

One responded.

Then another.

Radiant Metabolism continued working.

[Residual Sacred Mana Detected.]

[Trace Metabolism Ongoing.]

[Motor Function Recovery: PARTIAL.]

His arm still hurt.

Elise had used what appeared to be a relatively minor restraint technique without intending to injure him, and it had nearly removed an arm and a leg from the fight.

That gave Raven a far better understanding of what Champion actually meant.

They didn’t slow until Bellcross had completely disappeared behind them.

Roland found a stretch of low forest where they could stop without remaining visible from the road.

Raven dismounted.

His right leg partially gave way when it touched the ground.

Valeria caught him before he fell.

"I’m fine."

"Of course."

"I can walk."

"That also doesn’t mean you’re fine."

Raven leaned against a tree and tested his arm. The muscles were responding again, slowly and painfully, while Radiant Metabolism reduced some of the lingering sacred energy.

It had helped.

It had not come close to neutralizing the technique.

Valeria crouched in front of him.

"How bad?"

"Functional soon."

"That wasn’t what I asked."

"Then you asked badly."

She stared at him.

Raven conceded.

"The technique almost completely disabled one arm and one leg."

"And she was holding back."

"Yes."

Roland returned after checking the road.

"She isn’t following."

Raven nodded.

"Yet."

Roland looked toward the Mk.I.

"But you broke her barrier."

"No."

Valeria raised an eyebrow.

"We watched it crack."

"It cracked. The projectile didn’t penetrate."

Raven opened the breech.

Empty.

One projectile had produced two fractures in a barrier Elise had raised almost casually. She remained untouched, and now she knew the rifle could threaten her defenses.

Next time, she wouldn’t underestimate it.

"We didn’t win anything," Raven said.

Roland gestured back toward Bellcross.

"We aren’t captured."

"That’s different."

Valeria sat on a nearby rock.

"We also learned she can nearly immobilize you without trying very hard, while your rifle can damage one of her barriers."

"Yes."

"You seem more concerned about the first part."

"Because it matters more."

Roland smiled faintly.

"Being able to threaten a Champion still sounds useful."

"It is. But threatening someone isn’t the same as being able to beat them."

Raven looked down at the Mk.I.

The fracture in Elise’s barrier had been excellent information, but that was all it had been.

He was Level 15.

She was Level 60.

Awakened against Champion.

Elise had attempted to save him rather than seriously injure him, and she had still nearly ended the confrontation before Raven could respond.

The surprise of the Mk.I had bought him an escape once.

It wouldn’t buy him the same one twice.

Next time, Raven needed something Elise hadn’t already learned how to respect.
