Back to the 80s: Reclaiming My Name, My Family, and My Life
Chapter 71: Who Do You Think You Are?
Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Who Do You Think You Are?
He slowly turned, staring at Shen Zhenwu for several seconds before speaking. "Mr. Shen, I really didn’t mean to cause trouble. I was just worried you were rushing into acknowledging a daughter, and that someone might take advantage of the situation. You’re a pillar of our country; the Special Operations Department naturally has to keep a close eye on things."
Shen Zhenwu snorted. "Hah. So I suppose I should bow to you for your trouble?"
Sheng Hui’s tone was flat. "I wouldn’t dare presume. Everything I do is for the public good. I don’t need anyone’s gratitude."
"Absurd!"
Shen Zhenwu’s face fell instantly.
"Sheng Hui, is this how you always handle things? The Special Operations Department is always on your lips, and you’re always trying to drag people into their business."
"And when people don’t play along, you immediately turn on them and make their lives difficult! Everyone here saw with their own eyes how you were bullying people. You think you can just brush it all aside now?"
He took a huge step forward, his roar making the floorboards tremble. "When I became a leader, you were still wetting the bed! What gives you the right to pull this crap in front of me? Who the hell do you think you are? Even if your father, Sheng Zhanhong, were standing here, he wouldn’t dare speak to me like this!"
Mr. Shen was truly furious.
The room was full of people, but not a single one dared to speak up for Sheng Hui.
It didn’t matter that he was the official heir to the Sheng Family.
Besides, Sheng Hui was clearly in the wrong here.
He had barged into Building Three of the family compound without authorization, brandished a weapon right in the Shen Family’s living room, and failed to produce any temporary authorization documents the entire time.
Publicly humiliated, all the color drained from Sheng Hui’s face.
But his fists, clenched in his pockets, were white-knuckled. He was clearly forcing himself to suppress his rage.
He took a deep breath, his voice strained. "Mr. Shen, you’ve really misunderstood..."
"Misunderstood?"
Shen Zhenwu exploded with a curse. "You were bullying my daughter in my own home! And you call that a misunderstanding? You want to namedrop the Special Operations Department, so why don’t you tell everyone you were kicked out over six months ago? What gave you the right to barge into my home and scare my girl today? Your Sheng Family nameplate?"
He snatched the red folder from the coffee table and slammed it on its edge.
As soon as the words left his mouth, Sheng Hui’s face went deathly pale.
A flash of panic crossed his eyes, but he forced himself to straighten his back.
"Mr. Shen, this has nothing to do with the Sheng Family. It was purely my own initiative; I just couldn’t stand by and watch..."
"Bullshit!"
Shen Zhenwu was a classic old soldier. After getting married, to keep his wife happy and due to the organization’s repeated injunctions, he had spent years suppressing his rough nature, even managing to adopt a somewhat scholarly and respectable way of speaking.
But today, he was so furious he had completely lost his composure.
He was panting heavily, his voice booming so loud it seemed to make the rafters buzz. "Without your father Sheng Zhanhong backing you, who the hell do you think you are, Sheng Hui? You think you can slap me in the face time and time again?"
"Bullying people in their own home... I’ve lived a long life, and this is the first time I’ve seen such arrogance! Xiao Li, get the ropes, and be quick about it! Today, I’m going to drag this brat to his house and ask Sheng Zhanhong to his face if the person he raised fed all basic decency to the dogs!"
Before his voice had even faded, he had already ripped the tactical belt from his waist and thrown it onto the arm of the sofa.
Only when Li Hanchen made his move did Sheng Hui suddenly realize that Shen Zhenwu wasn’t just making empty threats.
What shamed him even more was that he couldn’t even touch the hem of Li Hanchen’s clothes!
His own lackeys were blocked at the door by the Shen family’s people, not daring to move an inch.
He had just rushed forward two steps when his shoulder was seized. Before he could even react, he took a solid kick to the stomach that sent him stumbling back several steps, nearly making him fall flat on his ass!
The force was vicious and precise, leaving him numb.
’Li Hanchen?’
’Isn’t he just one of Shen Zhenwu’s ordinary guards?’
’How are his skills so formidable?’
’Why has no one ever mentioned this guy before?’
Sheng Hui’s face alternated between pale and dark, his lips pressed into a thin line, not uttering a single word.
Meanwhile, Li Hanchen had already unfurled the hemp rope.
Sheng Hui gritted his teeth, trying to save face. "Mr. Shen, I admit I was wrong, okay? If you really insist on tying me up, then don’t blame me for not holding back!"
"You already pointed it at the Young Miss’s head. There’s no room for holding back anymore."
Li Hanchen’s tone was even, betraying no anger, but leaving no room for negotiation.
A breath caught in Sheng Hui’s throat. "I was aiming that at you! Song Yao was the one who threw herself forward!"
The moment he said it, he froze.
’Did I... just see a glint flash in Li Hanchen’s eyes?’
’His lips didn’t move, but his eyes... was that a hint of a smile?’
While he was still stunned, a guest nearby quickly tried to smooth things over.
’Who would dare offend either of these two?’
’On one side, you have Minister Sheng, who holds real power, and on the other, Mr. Shen, who commands a powerful force. We can’t afford to get on the wrong side of either of them!’
"Mr. Shen, Sheng Hui has admitted he was wrong. Let’s just let this go!"
"Yes, yes! You’re both men who carry great responsibilities. It’s just a squabble between the younger generation; no need to let it get so ugly. It would be embarrassing for everyone!"
Shen Zhenwu had just opened his mouth to reply when Song Yao gently tugged his arm.
She hadn’t interrupted since her father walked in, standing quietly to the side and leaving the entire stage to him.
Seeing her father stand up for her and protect her so fiercely warmed her heart.
So now, she didn’t want the matter to escalate, nor did she want her father to be accused of throwing his weight around on her behalf.
She took half a step forward, positioning herself in the center of everyone’s attention, and spoke with a beaming smile. "Dad, today is a joyous occasion for our family. Just because someone outside is being tactless, it doesn’t mean we should lose our composure. We are the hosts. When guests arrive, we must greet them with a smile and maintain our grace."
As she spoke, everyone in the room looked up at her in unison.
’This girl... she didn’t shout or cause a scene, but with a few gentle words, she defused a tense situation!’
"We all saw Sheng Hui’s attitude just now, yet Miss Shen can still maintain such dignity. That’s truly rare!"
Song Yao gave a slight nod, her tone light. "You’re too kind. I just keep one thing in mind: my father is a man of great integrity, and as his daughter, I can’t let him lose even a shred of face because of me."
"As for everything else? We can deal with it after we’ve handled what’s important. It’s not urgent, and it’s not worth our time."
Her words had barely settled before Song Yao won another round of enthusiastic cheers and praise.
At that moment, Yao Yuzhen, standing off to the side, and Shen Shuangshuang, who was clinging tightly to Sheng Hui’s arm, looked like two comical figures who had just been exposed on the spot.
They had planned it all out.
Today, they were going to ruin Song Yao’s reputation, sabotage her engagement, and make it so she could never hold her head up again.
But what was the reality?
Those families who were originally skeptical of Song Yao, afraid that marrying her would bring trouble, had now completely changed their tune!
Shen Zhenwu had always been protective of his own and would never allow his daughter to be wronged.
He waved his hand at once, ordering his men to first escort Sheng Hui back to the Sheng Family residence.
"Go back and tell Minister Sheng that I’ll pay him a visit tonight after I’m finished here. Sheng Hui bullied my daughter in my home today, and I need to get a clear answer from both father and son about this, face-to-face!"
"Yes, sir!"
Sheng Hui turned and left, his face ashen.
Shen Shuangshuang started to follow him, but Song Yao wasn’t about to let her slip away.
"Dad, the fact that those two adoptive parents could come all this way today is all thanks to my dear sister Shuangshuang’s arrangements."
The corners of her mouth lifted slightly, but her gaze was ice-cold as she stared directly at Shen Shuangshuang.
"I heard her heart has long since flown back to her birth parents. Why don’t we just grant her wish?"
Shen Zhenwu nodded.
Shen Shuangshuang instantly panicked. Tears came to her eyes as she wiped them away, sobbing, "Daddy, it’s not that I want to leave... It’s Sister... she won’t give me any way to live..."
