Chapter 108: Chapter 108: A Jar of Jealousy

Li Hanchen turned and asked Shen Rongdan.

"Where are the car keys?"

"I’m taking Song Yao to the hospital to get this checked out!"

Shen Jiayue, holding a basin of vegetables, peeked out of the kitchen door.

"Dinner’s just started cooking. Aren’t you going to eat?"

"Aunt, you guys go ahead and start. We don’t have time."

Li Hanchen said, holding Song Yao’s arm.

"We’ll talk after we get the results."

’A meal?’

’That was the last thing on their minds.’

The most urgent thing right now was to see with their own eyes if there was really a little one in her belly.

Song Yao wanted to turn back and say something, but Yang Wanqing was already waving her hands, shooing them away.

"Go, go! Hurry up and go! We’ll keep all the food warm for you at home!"

Shen Lixin couldn’t sit still either. He slapped his thighs and stood up.

"That’s right! Make a trip to the hospital first. We’ll celebrate after it’s confirmed!"

He also gave his grandson a kick on the way.

"What are you standing there stunned for? Go with your sister! Run errands, get water, hand over forms, you get it?"

Shen Rongdan was still in a daze when the sudden kick jolted him. He shot up and gave chase.

"Wait for me! Li Hanchen! Song Yao! I’ll drive you!"

He didn’t shut his mouth the entire way.

"Song Yao, from now on, I’m the kid’s biological uncle! You’d better remember that!"

"How old do you think he’ll be when he first calls me ’Uncle’? Can they talk at three months?"

"What if the baby’s premature? We should prepare a crib in advance, right? Should we buy a sterilizer now? And should the bottle brushes have soft or hard bristles?"

"..."

He droned on and on, like a chanting monk.

Li Hanchen, on the other hand, didn’t say a word the whole time.

He just sat there quietly, his gaze fixed on Song Yao’s lower abdomen, making her feel self-conscious.

Song Yao couldn’t help but touch his arm.

"It’s really not certain, you know... What if Grandma’s feeling was off?"

Li Hanchen nodded.

"Mm."

Then, he continued to stare.

Song Yao: "..."

’Fine, have it your way!’

She had just closed her eyes, planning to take a quick nap, when the car screeched to a halt.

Shen Rongdan shouted.

"We’re here! At the hospital entrance!"

The words had barely left his mouth when the car doors were pushed open.

The two of them jumped out of the car, one after the other, and without a word, circled around to Song Yao’s side and pulled her door open in unison.

Looking at the scene, Song Yao didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

"I might not be pregnant! Maybe... maybe I’ve just been eating too much lately, and all the fat went to my belly!"

"It’s no trouble to check. And if you aren’t, at least we’ll have peace of mind."

As Li Hanchen spoke, he secretly squeezed her fingers.

Song Yao glanced at him, narrowing her eyes. ’Are the tips of his ears a little red?’

Shen Rongdan had already made the arrangements. Even though it was long past closing time, as soon as Song Yao reached the consultation room, a nurse smilingly welcomed her inside.

It was just a quick pregnancy test. No blood draw was needed; just a urine test and a ten-minute wait.

Before long, the doctor came jogging over, holding the report, his face beaming with joy.

"Rong Dan! This is incredible news!"

"Your sister’s pregnant! Just over a month along!"

Song Yao stared at the lab report. Her gaze rested on the word "Positive" for two seconds before she slowly looked up.

’I’m really pregnant?’

Just as she was about to click her tongue in disbelief, Li Hanchen pulled her into a tight embrace.

"Cough, COUGH COUGH!"

She frantically patted his arm.

"Can’t... can’t breathe! Loosen up!"

Li Hanchen immediately let go, his face tense.

"Sorry, sorry! I was just so happy, my hands moved faster than my brain... I really didn’t mean to!"

Song Yao waved her hand and blurted out.

"Your child almost lost its mother!"

Only after the words left her mouth did she notice the corners of Li Hanchen’s eyes were wet. Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly tried to backtrack.

"Oh, I was just kidding! You weren’t squeezing hard at all. I’m just... It’s my first time being a mom, my legs feel like jelly, so I was just making a joke to lighten the mood..."

She was about to spin more of her story when her body swayed, and she stumbled to the side.

With quick reflexes, Li Hanchen reached out and wrapped his arm around her, holding her steady.

This time, his grip was just right. Her forehead rested against his chest, and she could hear his heart thumping loudly.

He just held her like that, not moving for a long time.

Not until Shen Rongdan had seen the doctor off and slowly ambled back, clapping Li Hanchen on the shoulder.

"Hey, tone it down, bro! If you keep holding her, Song Yao’s going to starve to death!"

Only then did Li Hanchen let go, take Song Yao’s hand, and turn to walk out.

Shen Rongdan: "..."

’Damn, he’s not even trying to hide his jealousy, is he?’

It was already pitch-black by the time they got home.

Shen Rongdan tossed the car keys and bolted into the courtyard.

He understood the situation perfectly. Right now, he was just a background character, so he might as well duck out early and snatch the glory of being the first to report the good news.

He shouted as he ran, his voice carrying through the courtyard gate and into the house.

"Grandma! Grandpa! We hit the jackpot! We hit the jackpot!"

Hearing his voice, Yang Wanqing and Shen Lixin came to the door to greet them.

Yang Wanqing was so amused she just shook her head.

"Silly boy!"

Her eyes crinkled as she smiled, and she patted Shen Lixin’s arm.

"Listen, just listen to this nonsense!"

Shen Rongdan slapped his forehead.

"Ah, no! It’s Song Yao! Song Yao is really pregnant!"

Shen Jiajia and Shen Jiayue immediately bounded up the steps and into the house.

"For real? How many weeks?"

"Just over a month!"

Song Yao followed them in, her voice light and a little shy.

"The doctor said everything is normal."

It had only been a month, but the whole family was celebrating as if it were New Year’s.

Shen Jiayue reached out to touch her belly, but Yang Wanqing quickly stopped her.

"Don’t touch yet! Let the girl catch her breath!"

As she spoke, she took the bag from Song Yao’s shoulder and handed it to Shen Jiajia.

"Go hang this up."

Before Song Yao could even react, the bag had been taken from her, her shoes had been removed for her, and a cup of hot tea was already being placed in her hands.

It was only the first day, and she had already been officially promoted to the family’s number one priority.

At dinner, everyone eagerly waited for her to take the seat of honor first.

The moment she put down her chopsticks, everyone else at the table immediately put down their own bowls and chopsticks.

Li Hanchen stayed by her side the entire time.

He personally escorted her to the door of her room, only turning to leave after confirming she was safely seated.

When it was time for her evening foot soak, he even tested the water temperature with his own hand.

That night, as they lay in bed, he rested his palm on her stomach, his eyes curving into crescents as he smiled.

Song Yao poked his face.

"Hey, what’s with the goofy smile? Did you win the lottery?"

Li Hanchen nodded earnestly.

"The doctor mentioned before that I’d have a hard time... fathering a child. It was more difficult for me than for most people. Things slowly improved with treatment and a bit of luck."

"But then..."

Before he could finish, Song Yao’s hand started moving toward his waistband, but he grabbed her wrist.

Without a blush or a racing heart, she blinked a couple of times, looking perfectly self-righteous.

"The doctor said you only came with one, and now that I’m carrying your child, I still haven’t even inspected the goods!"

Li Hanchen raised an eyebrow.

"You really want to see?"

Song Yao nodded like her head was on a spring.

He casually tucked the corner of the blanket in tightly.

"Close your eyes and go to sleep."

Song Yao obediently lay flat, then nudged his arm.

"So... when do I get to inspect it?"

"Sleep now."

"If you don’t tell me, my head will be full of questions, and I’ll be tossing and turning all night!"

She clutched the blanket and sighed dramatically.

"The left one, the right one... it’s all a big mystery."

"It’s really not much to look at. I’ll let you have a good look after the baby is born."

Song Yao opened her mouth but said nothing.

’After the baby is born...’

"Then why didn’t you tell me I’ve already seen him in my dreams? I even counted how many toes were on his little feet!"

Li Hanchen paused. His fingers loosened from her wrist and moved to the nape of her neck.

"It’s ugly. I was afraid of scaring you, and even more afraid of scaring the little one in your belly."

Song Yao was about to retort, ’What’s there for me to be scared of?’ but when she heard him mention the little one in her belly, the words on the tip of her tongue softened.
