Back to the 1980s: Becoming the Villain's Lucky Wife
Chapter 742 - 772: Aunt Xiao Lan, You’re So Much Like My Mom
"We didn’t fight. Gao Yuan was wonderful to me the entire time. How should I put it... when I’m with him, I really can’t find a single flaw."
Qin Jiao nodded. She’d sensed it too, just from their brief conversation earlier.
But Qin Xiaolan frowned and said, "But for a person to have no flaws, to be so perfect... that in itself isn’t normal, is it?"
"Is that what scared you?"
"It wasn’t that. At one point, Gao Yuan’s daughter, Momo, needed to use the restroom, so of course, I went with her. And while we were in there, Momo suddenly said that she hadn’t gone hiking with her mom and dad in a long time."
This was because Qin Xiaolan had heard from her sister that Gao Yuan’s ex-wife hadn’t gone abroad—she had gone missing.
With Momo suddenly bringing up her mother, combined with the chilly, eerie feeling of the park restroom, Qin Xiaolan shivered on the spot.
Qin Jiao said, "Did the little girl say whether her parents had a good relationship? Because according to the file, the child actually spent most of her time living with her mother in their hometown before."
Qin Xiaolan shook her head. "I asked, but she wouldn’t say anything. Oh, right, Sis, let me tell you the rest of what happened in the restroom."
"After that, no matter how I asked, Momo wouldn’t say a word. But while we were washing our hands, she suddenly said, ’Aunt Xiao Lan, you’re so much like my mom.’"
Hearing this, Qin Xiaolan’s feelings grew even more complicated.
She couldn’t explain why, but hearing it just left her feeling deeply unsettled.
Once a seed of doubt is planted, everything else starts to get magnified.
So, after hearing what Momo said, even though Qin Xiaolan didn’t let on that anything was wrong in front of Gao Yuan, she started having nightmares the moment she got home that night!
She gripped Qin Jiao’s hand nervously. "Sis, yesterday Gao Yuan suddenly said he wants to take me to his hometown! He said an important, high-ranking elder passed away and he has to go back. He even begged me to go with him as his girlfriend!"
"Did you agree?"
"He was so sincere and heartfelt that I almost said yes. But then I thought about the nightmares I’ve been having, so I told him I wasn’t feeling well and that we’d see how I felt when the time came. I did look pale, so when I said I was exhausted from work and hadn’t been sleeping well, he seemed to believe me and didn’t press the issue. At first, I felt bad about it, but after I got home... Sis, I suddenly felt a little scared, and I don’t know why."
"The day before you’re supposed to leave, just tell him you’re not feeling well and can’t go. Besides, New Year’s is only a few days away, and Uncle and Aunt said they’re coming to North City for the holiday this year. You can use the excuse that they’re arriving early and you can’t get away."
Qin Xiaolan nodded and said hesitantly, "Maybe I’m just overthinking things lately. It might not be a bad idea for us to spend a little time apart to think things through."
"Mm-hmm, that makes sense."
Seeing her cousin finally calm down, Qin Jiao breathed a sigh of relief as well.
’In truth, she’d already asked Ji Changxing to find someone to investigate Gao Yuan.’
’Until she was certain about what happened to his missing ex-wife, she couldn’t let Xiao Lan marry him in good conscience. Qin Jiao didn’t have many siblings or cousins to begin with, and ever since her rebirth, the girl had looked up to her as ’Sister Qin,’ trusting her completely—even more than her own parents.’
’Qin Jiao couldn’t betray her cousin’s trust.’
Qin Xiaolan hugged Qin Jiao’s arm as they walked out. "Sis, it’s so great to have you!"
Qin Jiao replied wryly, "As long as you don’t mind me being nosy."
"Of course not! I know you’re just looking out for me, Sis. Besides, if he really doesn’t have any issues—I’m talking about his character—you’d support me, right?"
Qin Jiao nodded.
’Being divorced isn’t a big deal.’
’In her eyes, character was more important than anything else.’
