Chapter 300 - 232: Setting Off
Chapter 300: Chapter 232: Setting Off
Yunqing’s voice came from beside him.
She walked briskly up to Chen Lin, reached out, and began to adjust his tie.
"This knot isn’t quite right, and your collar is a little crooked, too."
As she spoke, her fingers deftly undid the tie and retied it into a perfect Windsor knot.
After finishing with the tie, she smoothed out his collar as well.
In the process, the two of them were very close—so close that Chen Lin could even feel her warm breath as she exhaled.
Yunqing’s fingertips casually brushed against his neck, leaving behind a fleeting, almost imperceptible sensation.
A faint fragrance wafted into his nostrils.
It was the scent of her shampoo, carrying a hint of sweet flowers.
Chen Lin’s breathing unconsciously softened.
He lowered his head, just in time to meet Yunqing’s upward glance.
Her eyes were bright, holding a hint of mischievousness and something else... something Chen Lin couldn’t quite decipher.
"There."
Yunqing took a step back, admiring her "handiwork" with satisfaction.
"Now it’s perfect."
She winked at Chen Lin, a smile playing on her lips.
"Boss, you look more handsome than any of those domineering CEOs from the TV shows."
Chen Lin: "..."
He didn’t know how to respond.
The atmosphere became a little delicate for a moment.
Shen Yan stood to the side, her gaze fixed on the hands Yunqing had just used to adjust Chen Lin’s tie.
She pressed her lips together, a nearly imperceptible emotion flickering in her eyes.
Just then, the sales associate chose the perfect moment to approach, breaking the somewhat intimate atmosphere.
"Sir, this suit really is a perfect fit for you!"
"Would you like to look at any other styles? We just got a few new ones in..."
"That won’t be necessary," Chen Lin said quickly, feeling a wave of relief. "This set is fine. Let’s check out."
As he was paying, Chen Lin glanced at the price.
The suit jacket, shirt, and tie, plus a matching pair of dress pants, came to a total of 28,000.
For him now, that amount of money was truly just a drop in the bucket.
...
「December 22nd, Monday, 10:00 AM」
Inside the Yanhai Company office, the atmosphere was even more charged than usual.
The training for the 1.5B model had entered its final sprint.
Out of 20B tokens of training data, 15B had already been processed, and the remaining 5B were being pushed through at full speed.
Bai Qian sat in front of his computer, eyes glued to the steadily falling loss curve on the screen.
"Just 3B left..."
He muttered to himself, his fingers tapping unconsciously on the desk.
Pan Si stood behind him and pushed his glasses up his nose.
"At the current training speed, it should finish tonight."
"Mhm," Bai Qian nodded. "Once it’s finished, I’ll run a full round of benchmark tests."
...
「Eleven o’clock that night.」
The final batch of data finished processing.
Bai Qian had already written an automated test script that would launch the moment training was complete. The results would be sent directly to his email, so he could see them immediately, even without working overtime.
At two in the morning, the evaluation results were in.
Staring at the string of numbers on the screen, Bai Qian froze.
He rubbed his eyes, thinking he must be mistaken.
But the numbers were there, clear as day and undeniable.
"Holy shit..."
Bai Qian took a deep breath and, with a trembling hand, posted the evaluation report in the company’s group chat.
Then, he sent a WeChat message to Chen Lin:
[President Chen, the final evaluation report is out. You have to see this tomorrow. It’s insane. Absolutely insane.]
...
「December 23rd, Tuesday, 7:30 AM」
Chen Lin was jolted awake by his phone vibrating nonstop.
He groggily picked up his phone and saw that the group chat had exploded.
Sun Yu: "HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT!!!"
Pan Si: "These numbers... Am I seeing things?"
Shen Yan: "This is incredible."
Yunqing: "I don’t totally get it, but it feels like this is amazing?"
Huang Yiyi: "Congratulations! Congratulations!"
Chen Lin’s eyebrow shot up. He opened the evaluation report from Bai Qian.
A detailed table appeared on the screen.
| Benchmark | YanHai-1.5B (10B tokens)| Llama-1.5B | Llama-7B | Llama-13B
|-----------|------------------------|------------|----------|----------|
| MMLU | 63.7%| 42.1%| 62.5%|68.2%
| GSM8K | 51.2%| 11.2%| 47.3%|56.8%
| HumanEval | 35.6%| 8.1%| 29.8%|38.1%
| ARC-C | 58.9%| 39.4%| 53.2%|61.7%
| HellaSwag | 78.5%|62.3%| 75.8%|80.1%
Chen Lin’s hands trembled slightly.
MMLU, 63.7%!
It surpassed Llama-7B’s 62.5% and was closing in on Llama-13B’s 68.2%!
GSM8K, 51.2%!
Nearly four percentage points higher than Llama-7B’s 47.3%!
HumanEval, 35.6%!
It also surpassed Llama-7B’s 29.8%!
’What did this mean?’
It meant that the model Yanhai Company had trained—with only 1.5B parameters and 20B tokens of training data—
could already go head-to-head with models that had 7B or even 13B parameters in terms of overall capability!
And those 7B and 13B models were trained on tens of billions of tokens!
Chen Lin kept reading.
The report also included a written explanation:
[Inference Speed Test:
When processing an 8K-length context, YanHai-1.5B’s inference speed is 4.2 times faster than Llama-1.5B’s.
When processing a 32K-length context, YanHai-1.5B’s inference speed is 7.8 times faster than Llama-1.5B’s.
Note: When processing contexts longer than 16K, Llama-1.5B begins to exhibit significant attention collapse, and the quality of generated content drops sharply.
YanHai-1.5B, however, maintains stable generation quality even when processing 32K-length contexts.]
After finishing the report, Chen Lin leaned against his headboard, silent for a long time.
A wave of indescribable excitement and pride washed over him.
’He had derived this architecture all by himself.’
’From the initial mathematical framework to the specific formula design, and later, to all the engineering problems he and Bai Qian had solved together...’
’He had been personally involved in every single step.’
’And now, that architecture had truly succeeded.’
’It wasn’t just some theory on paper, not a castle in the sky.’
’It was a real, functional artificial intelligence model whose performance far surpassed the industry standard!’
Chen Lin took a deep breath, picked up his phone, and replied in the group chat:
[Great work, everyone. These results are even better than I’d expected.]
[Dr. Bai, Dr. Pan, keep optimizing the code and documentation over the next couple of days. When I get back from the Imperial Capital, we’ll officially begin training the 30B model!]
Bai Qian replied instantly: [Roger that!]
Pan Si: [Understood!]
Chen Lin put down his phone, got up, and began to pack his suitcase.
Today, he was heading to the Imperial Capital.
...
「Nine-thirty in the morning.」
「Jinmen West Station.」
Chen Lin walked into the high-speed rail station’s waiting hall, pulling a 20-inch suitcase behind him.
He was wearing the new suit he had just bought.
He wasn’t quite used to it, but since he was going to the Imperial Capital for a national conference, he figured it was best to dress formally.
A long line snaked back from the security checkpoint.
Chen Lin took out his ID and the e-ticket on his phone and got in at the end of the line.
Just then, he felt someone watching him from behind.
The feeling was subtle, like a faint, almost imaginary gaze resting on his back.
Chen Lin discreetly glanced back over his shoulder.
A woman was standing about five or six meters behind him.
She was tall and slender, dressed in a long, black down jacket and wearing a pair of large sunglasses that hid most of her face.
But from the features left visible—a high nose bridge, full lips, and a sharply defined jawline—
she appeared to be a strikingly beautiful woman of mixed heritage.
The woman seemed to notice him looking.
The corners of her mouth curved up slightly as she offered Chen Lin a polite smile.
Then, as if nothing had happened, she turned and walked off in another direction.
Chen Lin narrowed his eyes.
’There was something about her features that felt indescribably familiar.’
He racked his brain but just couldn’t place where he might have seen her before.
’Maybe she’s a celebrity...’
Chen Lin shook his head, not giving it another thought.
After all, the high-speed rail station was always bustling with people; you could run into anyone.
He looked away and continued waiting in the security line.
A few minutes later, Chen Lin cleared security and entered the main waiting hall.
He found his boarding gate, took a seat, and pulled out his phone to scroll through the news.
Little did he know that at the other end of the waiting hall—
the beautiful woman of mixed heritage was sitting in a corner, her gaze fixed on him from a distance, hidden behind her sunglasses.
She took out her phone and sent an encrypted message:
[Target is in the station.]
A reply came a few seconds later:
[Excellent. Proceed with the next phase of the plan.]
A knowing smile touched the woman’s lips.
She stood up and walked toward another boarding gate.
She wasn’t taking the same high-speed train as Chen Lin.
But this "chance encounter" was enough.
’All that was needed was to leave a vague impression in his mind.’
’When the time is right...’
’They would meet again.’
