Atticus’s Odyssey: Reincarnated Into A Playground

Chapter 1599 Core

Chapter 1599  Core

“So where did you say this place was again? Another territory?”

Ozeroth asked with a small frown. “The core of the Span.” Whisker replied. “The core…?”

“Think of it like this. Our world, and every other territory in the Span, sits on the surface of a planet. Where we’re going is the core.”

“And who rules it?”

Atticus asked as Whisker activated the portal, causing it to ignite into an ominous pool of black.

“The Eternal Span.”

“The Span…”

Unlike the Verge, the Span hadn’t shown himself even after many months had passed since Atticus entered the Span. While he was glad he didn’t have to deal with a second Verge, he couldn’t tell whether that absence was a good thing or a bad one.

‘I can’t gauge him.’

The fact that the Span hadn’t revealed himself meant Atticus couldn’t determine for certain whether he was ally or enemy.

“Let’s go.”

At his words, they nodded and stepped into the portal one after the other.

Atticus felt as though he were a streak of glow racing through an endless void. All around him, countless others moved through the shadow as well, each of them heading toward the same distant point.

‘The center.’

A sudden flare erupted ahead, swallowing his vision in blinding light. Moments later, sensation returned to his body, and Atticus slowly opened his eyes.

“Aren Gosmack. Purpose?”

“To participate in the resource wars.”

“Pass.”

“Hugo Newborn. Purpose?”

“To fight in the resource wars.”

“Pass.”

“Joranomo Nigh. Purpose?”

“T-to visit a relative.”

“Fail.”

‘What is this…?’

Atticus found himself standing in the middle of a queue that stretched endlessly behind him. Similar lines flanked both sides, each leading toward different tables manned by figures with tired, irritated expressions.

‘There they are.’

After a few seconds of searching, Atticus spotted the others standing in different queues some distance away. Each of them wore the same faintly puzzled expression, clearly just as uncertain about the situation as he was.

‘It looks like an access point. They’re checking us before we enter the Core.’

That conclusion settled in after a brief moment of observation. The figures seated at the tables asked every person the same question, their purpose, and based on the answer, they were either allowed through or turned away. Once Atticus understood that, he relaxed slightly. There were no immediate threats.

‘But why is it so silent?’

Their numbers should have been in the thousands, yet a deathlike stillness hung over the area, and everyone kept to themselves as though afraid to draw attention.

Whisker, Ozeroth, and Ozerra seemed to have noticed the same thing and likewise chose to remain silent. Atticus followed suit. Before long, the line crept forward until he found himself at the front.

The humanoid woman seated before him lazily picked up a sheet of paper from a nearby pile, her eyes scanning it without much interest.

“…Atticus Ravenstein?”

She jolted upright, staring at the paper as though she couldn’t quite believe what she was seeing. But her loud outbursts had reached the others. “Atticus Ravenstein!?”

“How is he here?”

“Didn’t he just reach the Span?”

“Don’t tell me he reached the middle parts in just a few months…”

The other figures seated nearby dropped their papers, all of them turning to stare at Atticus with open shock.

“I-is it really you…?”

“Yes.”

Atticus frowned as the woman shot to her feet, her eyes suddenly shining as she looked at him.

“Wow! It’s really the Atticus Ravenstein! Slayer of gods! You were amazing in the ascension games!”

“Thanks…”

He blinked, unsure how to respond, when the woman suddenly yanked off her shirt, exposing two heavy mounds of plump flesh.

“I can’t let this go to waste! Please, can I get your autograph?”

She waved the cloth excitedly in front of him, blinking with enthusiasm.

“…?”

Atticus wasn’t the only one rendered speechless. Even the people in the queues, and the other seated officials, stared at her in utter bafflement.

“Hm? Is something wrong?”

The woman blinked, confused.

“…Nothing. Alright.”

Pulling himself out of his stupor, Atticus used his will to neatly engrave the letter A into the fabric.

“Thank you!”

The woman clutched the cloth to her chest as though it were a sacred relic.

“Excuse me.”

“Hm?”

She gazed at him for a moment, then suddenly stiffened as the realized. “Ah, sorry, I got carried away. You’re here for the resource war, right?”

She dropped back into her seat so abruptly that her large mounds jiggled.

“…Yes.”

“I knew it! Haha! I wasn’t planning on watching, but there’s no way I’m missing it now!”

She wasn’t the only one reacting. All around him, the stares of the others, both in the queues and at the desks, sharpened noticeably.

“Definite pass!”

The woman declared it without hesitation.

Atticus wasted no time, quickly moving past her, wanting to put as much distance as possible between himself and the insane woman. Another flash of light swallowed his vision, and moments later, he felt himself being transported once again.

Rhexan Virex, an Archduke of the great Redflames, wore a deep frown as he approached the grand doors before him.

‘Why did he call for this meetup?’

He had been in the middle of an important meeting, discussing their game plan for the upcoming resource war, when word had suddenly reached him from the Archduke of the Nature faction about an urgent development.

Under normal circumstances, Rhexan would have ignored such a thing, especially when it came from a rival faction, but he had known Edras for a long time. The man wasn’t one to call unless the situation was truly important.

Maintaining his frown, Rhexan stepped through the grand doors and entered the room beyond.

“Hm?”

His brows furrowed as he took in the scene. A large round table dominated the center of the room, and seated around it were several figures whose presence alone seemed to wrap and weigh down the air.

“Oh? He called you too?”

“…”

Rhexan’s frown deepened. Like the Abyss god who had just spoken, the men and women seated around the table were all Archdukes of different factions within the Span. Yet, that alone wasn’t what put him on edge.

‘They’re all here.’

The heads of the major mid part families. The powers that controlled every affair across the entirety of the Core. Rhexan had come expecting a private meeting, but what he’d walked into was something entirely different.

It seemed the situation was far more dire than he’d initially thought.
