Ashes of the star forge
Chapter 205: Only one
The laugh rolled across the empty ocean and then stopped.
No words followed it.
Lian turned toward the sound. Far across the still water, a figure stood alone. At that distance the man looked small — little more than a dark shape against the soft light that rose from the surface. White hair. Simple clothing. The same outline they had seen on the preserved body in the tomb.
The figure took one step.
Space folded.
In the space of a single breath the man was no longer far away. He stood directly in front of them, so close that the air itself seemed to bend around his presence. His body had not grown in any normal sense, yet the pressure he carried made him feel massive — like a mountain that had decided to stand upright and look down at insects.
His aura hit them at the same moment.
It was incomplete. Broken. Fractured in places where death had taken its share. Even so, what remained was overwhelming. The weight of it pressed straight down on Lian’s shoulders and spine. His knees threatened to buckle. Breathing became deliberate work. The black substance inside him stirred once, then went still under the sheer density of the presence before them.
Elara staggered half a step before locking her stance. Ryzek’s crystalline ridges flared hard as he forced himself to remain upright. None of them could straighten fully. The aura did not attack. It simply existed, and that was enough to make standing in front of him feel like a trial of its own.
The man’s face was calm. Empty of play. Empty of amusement. His eyes moved across the three of them with the slow, measuring attention of someone who had once stood so far above ordinary cultivators that their lives barely registered.
He did not speak.
The ocean remained perfectly still. The soft light coming from the water cast no real shadows. In that silence the broken, dominating pressure of his remaining aura continued to bear down on them without relief.
Lian kept his blade in hand, though raising it higher felt impossible under the weight. His lungs worked against the pressure. Every instinct told him that the figure in front of them — dead or not — still carried enough authority to end the conversation before it began.
The man simply stood there and looked at them.
The pressure did not ease.
Lian forced his spine straight under the weight of the broken aura. Every breath still took effort. Elara remained locked in place beside him, jaw tight. Ryzek’s crystalline ridges stayed fully flared, the only sign of how hard he was resisting the same force.
The man in front of them finally spoke.
His voice matched the rest of him — low, controlled, and absolute. There was no warmth in it. No wasted tone.
“You came for my inheritance.”
It was not a question.
Lian did not answer immediately. The man’s gaze moved across the three of them with the same slow, measuring weight as before. When he continued, the words fell cleanly into the silence of the ocean.
“You passed the outer trials. You refused the false wealth. That is the only reason you are still standing here. But reaching this place does not make you worthy of what I left behind.”
The aura around him thickened for a moment, pressing harder against their shoulders and lungs before settling again.
“There are three tests remaining,” the man said. “They will measure what the earlier chambers could not. Strength of body. Clarity of will. Capacity to carry what I built.”
His eyes stopped on each of them in turn.
“Only one of you will receive the inheritance.”
The words landed with the same force as his presence.
Elara’s fingers tightened on her blade. Ryzek’s four amber eyes narrowed, but he did not speak. Lian kept his own expression controlled, even as the meaning of the statement settled fully into place. Whatever lay at the end of this path was not meant to be shared. The tomb had never been designed for a group reward.
The man continued without waiting for a response.
“The tests will begin when I decide. Until then, you will remain here. You will not leave this ocean. You will not turn on one another before the trials demand it. Those who cannot endure even that much have no claim to anything I left behind.”
He raised one hand slightly. The surface of the water around them darkened in a wide circle, as if the space itself had acknowledged the boundary.
“Prepare yourselves.”
The broken aura remained heavy and unyielding. The man did not step back. He did not soften. He simply stood there, dominating the empty ocean by existing, and waited for them to understand their position.
Lian drew a slow breath against the pressure and held the man’s gaze.
The inheritance would not be given.
It would be taken by whoever survived what came next.
