Ashes of the star forge
Chapter 203: The Dark Hall
The darker structure grew clearer with every slope they crossed.
Lian kept his eyes on it as they moved. The mountains of coins and scattered weapons continued around them without change, but the golden light weakened the closer they came to the building. By the time they reached the final rise, the glow had faded enough that the edges of the structure stood out in clean contrast.
It was a hall.
Long, low, and built from black stone that absorbed the remaining light instead of reflecting it. The entrance was an open archway with no doors. No formation lines marked the frame. No guardians stood at the threshold. The interior beyond the arch was dim, lit only by a thin residual glow that came from deeper inside.
Elara stopped a short distance from the entrance and studied the stone.
“This is the first thing in this place that does not look designed to tempt us,” she said.
Ryzek moved up on Lian’s other side, four amber eyes narrowed.
“The energy here is different,” he said. “Less decorative. More controlled. Whatever this space truly is, the center of it is likely inside.”
Lian agreed.
He stepped through the archway first.
The air inside was cooler and still. The sound of shifting coins faded the moment he crossed the threshold, as if the hall existed in a separate layer from the treasure outside. The walls were smooth black stone, unmarked except for thin grooves that ran the length of the corridor. The floor was solid and even. Their footsteps returned to normal instead of sinking into piles of wealth.
Elara and Ryzek entered behind him. The three of them moved deeper in a tight group, weapons ready.
The corridor opened into a wide main hall.
Rows of stone pillars supported the high ceiling. Between the pillars stood low platforms, each one holding a single object. Some held weapons. Some held jade boxes. Some held sealed manuals or strange metallic devices. Unlike the chaotic abundance outside, everything here was arranged with clear intention. Each item sat alone, given space and focus.
Lian’s gaze moved from one platform to the next.
The quality of the items was higher than most of what they had seen in the outer treasure fields. A blade on the nearest platform carried a pressure strong enough to make the air around it feel heavier. A closed jade box further down the row leaked a faint medicinal scent that spoke of high-grade refining. A set of armor on a distant stand still held active defensive formations that shimmered faintly when the light caught them.
Temptation returned, sharper than before.
These were not random piles meant to overwhelm the eye. These were selected pieces. The kind of resources that could create real, lasting power.
Lian forced himself to keep walking.
At the far end of the hall stood a final raised dais. On it rested a single ring.
It was simple in design — dark metal, unadorned, sized for a human finger. It sat alone on a small black cushion, with no other objects near it. The residual energy around it was quieter than the weapons and boxes they had passed, but denser in a way that made Lian’s skin prickle.
Elara’s voice came low beside him.
“That ring is the only thing in this hall that feels like a center.”
Ryzek stopped several paces from the dais and scanned the floor and pillars one more time.
“No visible restrictions,” he said. “But that means very little here.”
Lian stepped closer until he stood at the base of the dais. From this distance the ring looked ordinary. He had seen storage rings of similar shape many times. Yet the longer he looked at it, the stronger the sense of weight became — not physical weight, but the weight of a completed space and a finished design.
A possibility settled in his mind with sudden clarity.
The endless treasure outside. The perfect arrangement of this hall. The way the space had closed behind them. The conditions carved into the earlier chambers.
Lian’s eyes remained fixed on the dark ring.
“This entire place may not be a treasury,” he said quietly. “It may be the inside of one.”
Elara turned her head toward him. Ryzek’s four amber eyes narrowed further.
Lian did not look away from the ring on the dais.
“We may already be standing inside the dead man’s storage ring.”
