Ashes of the star forge

Chapter 201: Mountains of Gold

Lian finished his sweep of the black-stone chamber and returned to the empty platform.

Nothing else had revealed itself. No hidden doors. No secondary mechanisms. Only the raised surface and the line of text that still waited around its edge. Elara and Ryzek rejoined him a moment later. Their searches had produced the same result.

There was nowhere else to go.

Lian looked down at the platform one last time, then stepped onto it.

The moment both boots settled on the black stone, the chamber vanished.

Cold air turned warm. The pale blue light disappeared. In its place came a rich, golden glow that filled Lian’s vision from every direction. He staggered forward on instinct and stopped hard when his foot struck something that clinked and shifted under his weight.

Coins.

Thousands of them.

Lian looked down.

He was standing on a slope made entirely of gold coins, spirit stones, and stacked bars of rare metal. The pile stretched away in every direction, rising into hills and small mountains of wealth. Chests sat half-buried in the coins, some open and overflowing with more of the same. Others remained closed, their surfaces marked with formation seals that still glowed faintly.

Weapons lay scattered through the treasure like discarded tools.

Blades of every shape and size. Spears. Heavy axes. Delicate needles. Some radiated clear power. Others looked ordinary until the light caught the edge of their metal and revealed the dense energy forged into them. Armor stands stood at irregular intervals, holding complete sets that ranged from light mobile gear to full heavy plate that still carried the pressure of high-level formations.

Further away, entire racks of bottles and jade boxes rose in neat rows. Pills. Elixirs. Refining materials. Cultivation manuals bound in materials Lian did not recognize. The scale of it was unreal.

Elara stood several meters to his right, staring at the same impossible sight. Ryzek was further up the nearest slope of coins, four amber eyes narrowed as he turned in a slow circle.

None of them spoke at first.

Lian crouched and picked up a single spirit stone from near his boot. The energy inside it was pure and dense — far higher grade than anything commonly available in the lower regions. He turned it once between his fingers, then let it fall. The soft clink it made when it hit the rest of the pile sounded real.

Too real.

He straightened and forced himself to look past the immediate glitter of wealth. The space they stood in had no clear walls. The golden light simply continued until it faded into a soft haze in the distance. There was no ceiling. No visible exit. Only treasure in every direction.

“This is not the chamber,” Lian said.

Elara’s voice came quiet but steady.

“No. It isn’t.”

Ryzek stopped turning and looked back toward them.

“The energy here is unstable at the edges,” he said. “It feels constructed. Layered. Like a space that was built to impress before it was built to function.”

Lian’s gaze moved across the nearest mountain of coins and the weapons half-buried in them. The sheer quantity was enough to fund wars, buy sects, or raise an ordinary cultivator through several realms if used carefully. For a moment the weight of what he was seeing pressed against the practical part of his mind.

Resources on this scale would change everything.

Then the more careful part of his thinking reasserted itself.

They had stepped onto a platform that demanded balance and payment. The tomb had already proven it did not give freely. A space filled with unlimited treasure and no immediate guardian felt wrong in a way he could not ignore.

He closed his hand into a fist and released it again.

“We do not touch anything yet,” Lian said. “Not the weapons. Not the pills. Not the stones. We find the boundary of this place first.”

Elara nodded once. Ryzek gave a short sound of agreement and began moving down the slope of coins toward what looked like a flatter section in the distance.

Lian took one last look at the endless glittering wealth around them, then followed, boots sinking slightly into the shifting coins with every step.
