Ashes of the star forge

Chapter 199: Unusual

They searched the chamber in silence.

Lian took the section near the platform and the body. Elara moved along the curved wall to the right. Ryzek covered the opposite side and the area near the entrance passage. The silver light from the ceiling channels remained steady, giving them a clear view of every surface.

Minutes passed.

Most of what they found was more of the same — smooth stone, clean floor, no hidden seams, no additional carvings beyond the single line of text already discovered. The residual energy in the chamber stayed constant and quiet. Nothing reacted to their presence.

It was Ryzek who stopped first.

He stood near a section of the wall that looked no different from the rest, then crouched and brushed his fingers just above the floor. After a moment he called the other two over without raising his voice.

“Here.”

Lian and Elara joined him. At first neither of them saw anything unusual. Then the angle of the light shifted slightly as Lian moved, and a small rock became visible against the base of the wall. It was no larger than a closed fist, dull gray, and roughly rounded. In any other place it would have been unremarkable. In this chamber — where every surface had been deliberately smoothed and cleared — it stood out immediately.

Elara frowned.

“That does not belong here.”

Ryzek nodded once.

“Everything else in this room was placed with precision. The body. The blade. The carving. Even the light channels. A loose rock on the floor is the only thing that feels wrong.”

Lian studied it without touching it. The rock carried no obvious energy signature. It did not glow. It did not vibrate. It simply sat there, out of place.

They spent another stretch of time examining the area around it. No formation lines appeared under close inspection. No pressure plates or hidden seams revealed themselves in the nearby floor or wall. The rock remained the only anomaly.

Eventually Lian spoke.

“We can leave it and keep searching, or we test it. Standing here changes nothing.”

Ryzek looked at the rock for a long moment longer, then at the preserved body on the platform.

“If this chamber has a final mechanism, it may require a deliberate action. The carving already told us something must be given or left behind. This may be part of it.”

Elara did not look convinced, but she also did not argue. Their resources were limited. Turning back was not a real option. Staying frozen in place accomplished nothing.

Lian was the one who finally reached down.

He hesitated with his fingers just above the surface of the rock, then closed his hand around it and lifted it from the floor.

For a single breath nothing happened.

Then a low mechanical sound rolled through the chamber.

It started beneath the floor and rose into the walls, a deep grinding of ancient mechanisms shifting after a long period of stillness. Dust that should not have existed in the perfectly clean room sifted down from the ceiling channels. The silver light flickered once.

Right in front of the place where the small rock had rested, the air began to shake.

Space itself warped. The stone wall distorted as if viewed through moving water. A vertical line of darkness split open in the air, widening with a sound like tearing cloth mixed with grinding stone. The edges of the tear pulled outward, revealing a void that had no visible floor or walls.

The pull came immediately.

It was strong and direct, centered on the tear. Lian felt his body dragged forward before he could fully plant his feet. Elara staggered beside him. Ryzek tried to drive energy into the floor to anchor himself, but the force increased the moment the tear stabilized.

The dark opening widened further and swallowed the space in front of them.

Lian lost his footing first. Elara reached for the platform and missed. Ryzek’s brief attempt to resist ended when the pull intensified and dragged all three of them off the stone floor.

The tear closed behind them with a heavy, final sound as they were pulled through.
