Chapter 191: What Waits Below

I know many of you are already asking the same question — why don’t they just fly across the gaps?

The answer is simple. The moment they entered this corridor, something in the tomb locked that ability down. Flight Qi scatters the instant it leaves the body. Short bursts fail. Sustained flight is impossible. The place itself refuses to let them leave the ground. That is why every gap has to be crossed the hard way.

Lian stood on the small platform with Elara and Ryzek, staring at the last three gaps. The fog ahead looked thicker than before. It no longer sat perfectly still. Slow currents moved inside it, rolling against the edges of the stone platforms like something breathing just beneath the surface.

None of them spoke about it.

Lian prepared for the next jump. He backed up as far as the limited space allowed, then ran and pushed off. His boots cleared the fog and hit the next platform cleanly. He turned at once to watch the others.

Elara crossed after him. Ryzek followed.

The moment Ryzek’s second foot landed, the fog between the platform they had just left and the one they now stood on rose.

It did not rise far — only to the height of a man’s chest — but it rose with clear purpose. Long, thin shapes moved inside it. At first they looked like strands of thicker mist. Then one of them brushed the edge of the platform and left a wet, dark smear on the stone.

Something was in the fog.

A second shape lifted higher, close enough for the blue embers above to catch it for a fraction of a second. It was pale, jointed, and far too long to belong to any normal limb. It withdrew at once, sinking back into the fog as if the light itself had stung it.

Ryzek’s voice came low.

“It waited until we were all on this side.”

Lian kept his eyes on the fog. The surface was moving more clearly now. Several long shapes slid beneath it, circling the platform they stood on. The gaps ahead still needed to be crossed. The fog behind them had already risen enough to make going back impossible without stepping directly into whatever lived inside it.

Elara shifted her stance, blade ready.

The fog on their left side swelled upward again. This time a full length of the pale limb came with it, slamming onto the edge of the platform hard enough to crack the stone. The limb was segmented and glistening, ending in a flat, hooked tip that scraped across the rock as it searched for purchase.

Lian stepped in and cut down through it before it could find a grip. The blade met resistance, then parted the limb cleanly. The severed section thrashed once and fell back into the fog, leaving a trail of thick, colorless fluid across the platform.

The fog boiled.

More limbs began rising at once.
