Chapter 69: The Sword Answers The Call

  • Next Chapter

Five rapid strikes cracked out in succession, the Wyrmscale Serpentlash wreathed in lightning as it lashed across the Hollowgale Tyrant’s hide.

The damage barely registered. The opening gambit still did its job, sounding the horn for everything that followed.

Wraithlord answered first, a roar tearing loose as he triggered Cinder Charge closing the gap in a single blurred motion, the charger beneath him trailing fire with every stride.

Under normal conditions, that charge carried a stun on landing, the sheer force of impact enough to lock down most targets for a crucial half-second.

Berserk status stripped most of that away control resistance spiking hard the moment a boss crossed into that threshold, and with several levels of suppression working against Wraithlord on top of it, the stun simply didn’t land at all.

The Tyrant’s eyes flared, and a massive pincer swept around in a brutal arc, catching Wraithlord mid-charge and sending both rider and mount tumbling a good six meters across the canyon floor.

A tenth of his health bar vanished in that single exchange.

Thunder Roc dove next, talons wreathed in crackling current, aiming a raking strike meant to open the Tyrant’s flank.

It never connected. The Tyrant’s tail whipped up first glossy black, tipped in a barbed spike that caught the morning light with a cold, wicked gleam and drove straight through Thunder Roc’s wing before the strike could land.

A single brutal yank hauled it bodily out of the air and slammed it into the ground hard enough to shake loose earth for several meters around.

Void Leviathan came in last, jaw splitting wide as a volley of bone spikes tore free and screamed toward the Tyrant’s exposed side.

A raised pincer caught the entire volley, absorbing it wholesale. Barely a scratch made it through.

The Tyrant’s eyes flared crimson, and it turned, palm open, closing its massive hand around empty air in Void Leviathan’s direction.

A black, writhing current spiraled loose from the gesture, coiling into the shape of a serpentine dragon that wrapped tight around Void Leviathan’s frame, grinding out damage with every passing second.

Berserk and buffed forty percent across every stat, the Hollowgale Tyrant had simply outgrown what three companions could handle cleanly.

Level and attributes both stacked firmly in its favor now, and the fight had tipped hard against them.Against all of that, Alexis was the one genuinely holding her ground.

As the party’s only melee class, she’d never stood anywhere near the others during the Tyrant’s area attacks, which kept her clear of the wind strike that had already carried off half her team.

Blade drawn, she pressed the attack on her own terms a crimson, fire-wreathed sword catching the light with every swing, damage modest but her footwork sharp enough to matter.

She read every tell the Tyrant offered, stepping clear of openings before they fully closed, weaving in and out of its blind angles with the kind of instinct that didn’t come from a stat sheet.

When a hit couldn’t be avoided outright, she met it with her blade angled just right, parrying enough of the force away to keep standing.

It tracked with everything Kael remembered about her from a life that no longer counted for much. In that other version of events.

She’d clawed her way up to the second-best melee ranking on the entire server through nothing but relentless, obsessive practice good enough, eventually, to make him work for a win.

Raw talent, sharpened by more hours than most players would ever put in. At this point her mechanical skill already sat comfortably alongside professional-tier competitors.

Experience was the only real gap left.

Against ordinary trash mobs, that skill barely mattered stat checks and raw output decided those fights, and her numbers simply couldn’t compete with what his companions brought to the table.

Against something this far above their level, instinct and reflex counted for more than brute force ever could.

Wraithlord and the others were fighting almost entirely on muscle memory now, their suppressed stats leaving them with little room to actually think their way through an opening.

Alexis, stat disadvantage and all, was out-thinking the fight.

It was the kind of performance that didn’t show up cleanly on a damage meter no eye-catching numbers, nothing that would impress a forum full of spectators scrolling past a combat log.

Just a player reading an opponent correctly, over and over, and refusing to pay for a mistake she hadn’t actually made.

Interesting. Kael turned the observation over with real curiosity. A contracted player might have an edge over a companion pulled from a bestiary after all something a stat sheet alone can’t fully capture.

He flicked the whip out in a short arc, catching her across the shoulder.

Crack.

A warm pulse of energy rolled through her at the contact, stats spiking seven percent across the board. She shuddered at the sensation, then pressed harder into the fight, visibly emboldened.

Skill alone, though, only stretched so far against a gap this wide. A few seconds later, the Tyrant’s tail caught her across the ribs, and she went down hard, health dropping past the halfway mark in a single ugly exchange.

She was back on her feet almost before she’d finished rolling, slamming a large health potion back and readying her blade for another pass.

Kael stopped her with a single word. "Don’t."

"Your current stats and gear can’t close that gap. Going back in is just feeding it a free kill."

Something in Alexis bristled hard at the implied insult tucked inside that assessment. "If you’re so confident, why don’t you get in there instead of standing back here handing out commentary?"

Kael’s mouth curved, unbothered. "Funny. I was about to."

"Wait, what?" She blinked, genuinely thrown. "You’re a Beastlord. You’re supposed to stay back and buff, not throw yourself into melee range of a berserk Legendary boss."

"Who said a Beastlord can’t fight?" He studied her with open interest. "I caught more than a little of my own footwork in what you were just doing out there. You’ve clearly been studying it."

"Shame you never got close enough to actually pick up the parts that matter."

He raised one hand, reaching toward her through the air, and spoke with quiet command.

"Sword. Come."

Alexis barely had time to register the words before heat flooded through her entire body a wash of crimson, lotus-petal flame wrapping her frame and twisting it, reshaping it, faster than thought could keep pace.

In the space of a single breath, the woman standing there was gone, and in her place hung a longsword wreathed in scorched crimson light, heat radiating off the blade in slow, visible waves.

It cut through the air with a single clean note and landed, hilt-first, in Kael’s waiting palm.

The battlefield around them went quiet for a beat, even the Tyrant’s furious bellowing seeming to pause as the transformation finished settling.

Nobody left standing in that clearing had expected this particular turn, least of all the person it had just happened to, now a sword rather than a swordswoman, and very much still conscious inside it.
