Chapter 60: The Game Behind the Game

The crimson spear went through her chest and out the other side.

For half a heartbeat, a clean, translucent hole hung where Ashley’s body should have been.

Then Wraithlord withdrew the blade and drove it in again, and again, a blur of red steel that gave her no time to flinch, let alone fight back.

Two seconds. That was all it took to strip her health bar down to nothing and send her flickering out of existence, off to whatever respawn point the game had reserved for her.

The square stayed frozen for a beat.

Then it detonated.

"What just happened? Did he actually just kill her?!"

"That was BabyAsh! Why would Unrivaled put down BabyAsh?"

"Because I didn’t like her," Kael said, to no one in particular.

"Bit harsh, though. Somebody hands you a gift-wrapped opportunity and you just... turn it down?"

"Not everyone’s driven by the same appetites you are, pal."

"Right? You think a guy like Unrivaled struggles to find company?"

"Honestly, she just overreached. She wasn’t a star because of her own talent Silversong was carrying her from behind the whole time. Take him out of the picture and what’s left?"

"She really thought she could ride a stranger’s coattails just by showing up and making a scene. Embarrassing."

"Good thing Silversong cut her loose when he did."

"Still, though this is a safe zone. Killing someone inside Frostwatch’s walls? He’s about to get hunted down by the city watch.

Doesn’t he care about losing rank?"

The crowd had a point. Under Ascension’s rules, open-field PvP carried no penalty, but killing another player inside a capital’s protected zone marked the killer as an outlaw a crimson name that no patrol in the city would ignore.

The moment Ashley’s body dissolved, the gamertag Kael had kept hidden since he first logged in flickered back into view above his head, and the letters bled to a hard, unmistakable red.

UNRIVALED

Down the length of the avenue, the noise of heavy boots rose above the crowd.

A squad of city watchmen came at a dead run, armor gleaming, players scrambling out of their way as they closed on the scene.

Kael didn’t run. Didn’t reach for a weapon. He simply stood there in the middle of the street, red name blazing, and waited for them to arrive.

The captain leading the patrol took one look at him calm, unbothered, practically leaning into the attention and his face darkened with fury.

"You’ve got some nerve, murderer! Spilling blood in the streets of Frostwatch? You’ll pay for it with your life!"

He drew his blade in one fluid motion and swung for Kael’s neck.

Halfway through the arc, Kael produced a small token from his pocket and held it up between them.

The blade stopped.

The captain’s whole face changed as he registered what he was looking at.

He hauled his sword back like it had burned him, throat working, all of his earlier certainty draining out in the space of a heartbeat.

"That’s you’re the Third Princess’s personal guard captain?"

"Something wrong with the token?" Kael raised one eyebrow, mild as milk. "Should I send for Her Highness to vouch for me in person?"

"No! No, that won’t be necessary!"

The captain shook his head so fast it looked painful. He forced a strained, apologetic smile. "Forgive me, sir. I didn’t recognize you.

That was a serious error on my part."

"Then let me ask directly." Kael’s voice stayed pleasant.

"I just killed someone in the middle of the street. Do I answer for that with my life, or do I go back with you to stand trial?"

"Neither! Absolutely neither! The man clearly had it coming anyone who’d earn that kind of end is no loss to this city. You did the kingdom a service, sir."

Kael nodded, faintly amused. Sensible man. He fished a handful of gold coins from his inventory and pressed them into the captain’s hand with the easy air of someone who did this every day.

"Long shift. Get the men a round of drinks on

me." The patrol practically fell over themselves thanking him.

Kael waved it off, turned, and walked away with a blood-red name blazing above his head and a full squad of city watchmen bowing him out of the square like visiting royalty.

Only after he’d disappeared around the corner did the crowd finally exhale.

"Wait. He’s flagged red. Why didn’t they arrest him?"

"They bowed to him. They actually bowed."

"He must hold some kind of official rank inside the kingdom’s own faction. Player status and NPC status."

"Hold on, so you can just talk your way out of that?"

"That’s the whole thing, isn’t it? This game isn’t just about fighting. It’s about who you know, and who owes you."

The forums caught fire faster than the square had.Someone had recorded the entire exchange Ashley kneeling, begging to be taken in, the spear coming down and posted it under a title that said everything it needed to.

Within minutes, the view counter crossed ten million and the clip sat at the top of the front page.

"This is the funniest thing I’ve seen all week."

"BabyAsh really thought she was smarter than the entire internet."

"She rode Silversong’s name for years and now she’s trying to trade up? Who does she think she is?"

"Silversong parted ways with Ironclad Esports just a few days ago, and she’s already shopping for the next sponsor.

That’s cold."

"Well played, Unrivaled. Some people need that kind of wake-up call."

"If it were me, I wouldn’t have let her off that easy."

"...You okay, buddy?"

At the other end of the connection, in a room the game couldn’t reach, Ashley sat rigid, breath ragged, chest heaving as the comments scrolled past.

Every one of them was a knife. The same audience she’d spent years cultivating, laughing at her in real time.

"That coward," she hissed. "That absolute is he even a man?"

Rage burned through the humiliation, hot and clean. If he wants to play like this, fine.

I’ll burn every bridge between us and take him with me.

She snatched her phone off the desk, thumb already jabbing at the screen, opening her feed.

She’d write it herself every detail, every accusation, a full-length post that would drag Unrivaled through the mud in front of the same audience he’d just used to humiliate her.

She’d barely typed the first line when the air behind her rippled.

A shape peeled out of the empty space in the corner of the room, steps completely silent.

Faint light flared along its outstretched hand, a skill charging silently and a low voice spoke, cold and unhurried, meant for someone else entirely.

"Take her out. Quietly. Then we bring her to the boss."

The blow landed a heartbeat later a flash of pale light that struck the back of her skull and turned the room black.

Hollow Blow.

The phone slipped from her fingers and hit the carpet, screen still glowing with an unfinished sentence nobody would ever read.

Whoever had been waiting in that corner didn’t linger to admire the work.

A second shape peeled away from the same patch of shadow, and between them, Ashley Monroe was gone from the room before her monitor had even finished dimming to standby.
