Ascension Online: My Beasts Evolve infinitely
Chapter 130: Beacons on the Northern Horizon
Dawn had barely cleared the horizon when the first column of smoke rose.
On the southern bank of the Silverflow, thousands of players stood among the wreckage of the night’s battle, boots deep in churned mud and spent arrows, most of them swaying with exhaustion. One of them glanced north, out of nothing more than habit, and stopped.
A single black plume stood against the pale blue sky, far in the distance, thick and unhurried, rising as straight as a mast.
Then a second appeared, nearer. Then a third, nearer still. They came one after another, each flaring up closer than the last, a chain of fires leaping southward across the plains faster than any rider could have carried the news.
Within a minute they had crossed the river itself. Within five they had passed beyond the southern horizon, and the whole sky behind the army had turned the color of old iron.
A strange hush settled over the battlefield, the kind that falls when a large crowd realizes, all at once, that something much bigger than the morning’s business has arrived.
"Those are beacon fires. Actual beacon fires."
"Weirdly beautiful, honestly. Old-fashioned way to send a message, but it works."
"Hold on, though. The war’s over. We won. Who’s lighting signal fires now?"
"Did you skip the lore entirely? There’s exactly one thing on this continent that gets the beacons lit."
"The Bulwark of Ash. Something’s happening at the northern wall."
A deep bell tolled across the sky before anyone could answer, its note so heavy it seemed to settle in the chest rather than the ears.
[Server-Wide Announcement: The Hollow Legion, silent for a thousand years, has sounded its war horn. An endless host marches out of the blizzard and will assault the Bulwark of Ash at eight o’clock this morning. The server-wide event The Hollow Descent has begun.]
"All adventurers are summoned to the Bulwark to defend the realm. This battle will decide the fate of the living."
"Rewards will be distributed by point ranking when the event concludes. All players may participate."
The message repeated itself three times before the sky finally fell silent.
The reaction came in a wave, spreading from city to city, thread to thread, until every channel on the server was moving too fast to read.
"The Hollow Legion is marching on the Bulwark. This is the real thing. A full server event."
"With a battle this size, there’ll be a world boss somewhere in it. Probably the kind that tears the sky open."
"We’re level thirty-something. Are we just fodder at a fight like that?"
"Who cares? Show up, fight, collect the rewards. That’s the whole plan."
"Everybody to the walls!"
Server-wide events always meant serious loot, and the news lit a fire under the whole player base. In every major city, crowds scrambled to restock potions and repair armor before heading for the Waygates, the northern teleport queues stretching out of the plazas and down the streets.
Only in Frostwatch and Westfall did the cheering curdle into something closer to a collective groan.
"You’ve got to be kidding me."
"I’ve been up all night fighting that river war, and now the whole continent wants another round?"
"The Hollow Legion picked today? Did they check the calendar first?"
"Forget it. Two days without sleep never killed anyone. Missing a world event would haunt me for years."
"Going offline for ten minutes. Energy drink, then back in to take on the dead."
Most of the players were mentally spent, but a few hours of rest bought through sheer stubbornness would carry them.
The armies were another matter. Northvale’s and Westfall’s standing legions had both bled heavily over the last night, and whatever strength remained in their ranks needed time to recover before it could be put back in the field.
Neither kingdom had that time.
Beside Kael, Elara stood very still, eyes fixed on the smoke rolling over the northern sky, her jaw set tight.
"Of all the mornings," she said under her breath, anger and dread tangled together in the words.
If the Bulwark fell, the dead would not come to Westfall, or to the southern capitals, or to any of the warm kingdoms along the coast.
They would come to Northvale first, the kingdom at the very top of the map, the last stretch of living land before the ice. Her kingdom. Her people.
A long, raking cry split the air above them before she could say more.
A griffin dropped out of the dawn, wings flaring wide, and its rider vaulted from the saddle before the creature had fully landed.
He wore gilded plate marked with the royal sigil, and he went to one knee in front of Elara without pausing to catch his breath.
"Your Highness. The Hollow Legion has struck the Bulwark in force, and its defenses are in grave danger. His Majesty commands your presence at the wall at once. The soldiers need to see you there."
Elara straightened. The fear in her expression closed away, replaced by something steadier.
"Tell His Majesty I will not fail him," she said. "If it comes to that, I will hold the wall until I fall."
"Understood, Your Highness."
A bright chime sounded in Kael’s ear in the same instant.
[Quest Triggered: The Frostbound Throne Chapter Quest: Smoke Over the Bulwark. Accompany Elara Winters to the Bulwark of Ash and defend against the Hollow Legion’s assault. You must protect her throughout the battle. Rewards will be substantial."]
[Warning: During this event, Elara cannot be recalled to the Rest Sanctum. If she falls, she is lost permanently and cannot be revived.]
Kael read the warning twice.
Here it comes again.
He had waited a long time for the main quest to advance. Now it had, and it came with an edge sharp enough to cut.
Elara had been the foundation of nearly everything he’d built in this second life, a quiet partner who reached into the places he could not, and who had never once asked him for anything in return.
Losing her was not an option he intended to consider.
His eyes narrowed as he drew a slow breath.
"Understood," he murmured, to the quest log, to himself. "We stay sharp this time."
He turned to Elara. "We move now."
The journey took close to half an hour, hopping from waystation to waystation along the northern road, the air cooling noticeably with every leg until their breath turned to mist.
The light grew thin and pale. The last green faded out of the landscape, giving way to white.
When they finally stepped off the last transfer and climbed the final hill, Elara stopped beside him and said nothing.
Ahead, across a snowfield so vast it seemed to have no far edge, a wall rose out of the ground, a hundred meters tall and more, sheathed in ice that had been building up for centuries.
It ran from horizon to horizon, a coiling dragon of frost and stone, cutting the world in half. North of it lay everything that wanted the living dead. South of it lay everyone who didn’t.
The Bulwark of Ash, standing alone against the end of the world.
